First Arab then artist: media discourse on Arab art in Western European digital media. The case of El Mundo, The Guardian and Libération
Casas, Gerard
Tutor: Christopher Tulloch
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
This study aims to analyse the media discourses and frames around Arab art that operate across Western European digital media platforms. In order to do so, sixty press articles published in 2015 in the arts and culture sections of El Mundo (ES), The Guardian (UK) and Libération (FR) were examined following the parameters of the framing theory and critical discourse analysis. This paper concludes that Western media persistently report on Arab arts as a pretext to perpetuate hegemonic discourses around Arabs, especially influenced by Orientalism and Eurocentrism, whereby Arab arts and their artistic relevance are very seldom discussed in isolation. Such findings underline the need for media to revise their journalistic practices for a more ethical coverage of Arabs, particularly when focusing on Arab art and their practitioners.

Tutora: Pilar Medina Bravo
ella.

A plausible paradox? The potential for media accountability in Vietnam through traditional and innovative instruments
Matthews, Karen A.
Tutora: Ruth Rodríguez Martínez
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
At face value, it seems implausible for Vietnam’s state-controlled media to operate within the Western paradigm of media accountability. The media’s political constraints, coupled with low-quality offerings in journalism higher education, appear
to severely limit its ability to be transparent, self-regulating and fostering high reader participation. Some researchers purport that media accountability and self-regulation simply cannot exist in such tightly-controlled media environments. This research proposal draws on studies across transitioning media environments to ask whether there’s potential for media accountability in Vietnam through traditional and innovative instruments. A survey, focus groups, interviews and document analysis is proposed across Vietnamese media professionals, media researchers and mediarelated
documentation to answer this question. This proposal extends on studies that have taken media accountability and self-regulation instruments outside of a Western context for the first time, but still, such studies are yet to take place in an Asian
context and specifically in Vietnam.

Daily ‘dairy’: analysing the perceived kinship of food lobbies and the media output
Yazianok, Maryna
Tutora: Núria Almiron Roig
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
This work argues that while the consumption of ‘dairy’ products is widely encouraged as healthy and essential, the interests of the bovine animals who ‘produce’ milk are not taken into the account. In order to make visible the existing system of oppression of farmed animals, the public access documents of the main European agri-food lobbies, namely CELCAA, Copa-Cogeca, and FoodDrink Europe are thoroughly analyzed, with a special emphasis made on the ‘dairy’-related discourse. Besides, the role of national media in constructing the image of “healthy milk” is discussed on the example of 96 news stories collected from British (The Guardian; The Times) and Spanish newspapers (El Mundo; El País). The study follows the framework of Critical Animal and Media Studies and employs the methodology of Critical Discourse Analysis. The preliminary findings based on the empirical results reveal the perceived parallelism between the discourse of aforementioned lobbies and national media discourse.

Tutora: Pilar Medina Bravo

Sinking strangers: media representations of climate refugees on the BBC and Al Jazeera
Høeg, Elida
Tutor: Christopher Tulloch
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
This study seeks to investigate the media representations of climate
refugees in two global media outlets: The BBC and Al Jazeera. An exhaustive
sample of the online coverage from 2000 until 2017 has been gathered and
examined through a content analysis guided by framing theory and multimodal
critical discourse analysis. After reviewing the 29 news stories, this paper finds
that climate refugees are framed in four ways: As victims, security threats,
activists and abstractions. In both media outlets, climate refugees are
aggregated, collectivized and made generic – and their situation is
deagentialized. The study concludes that the BBC mainly talks about climate
refugees instead of talking to them, and that this has an impact on the climate
refugees’ depicted agency. Al Jazeera quotes more climate refugees in their
journalistic coverage, and this allows the reader to understand and empathize.
However, both media outlets tend to represent climate refugees as «third world
others»: as sinking strangers.

The construction of refugees and asylum seekers in german print media:
a critical discourse analysis of the “refugee crisis” in Germany from 2015- 2017
Schmidbaur, Julia
Tutor: Christopher Tulloch
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
In September 2015, the Federal Republic of Germany had to deal with an unexpected number
of refugees crossing the German border. Global conflicts inter alia the civil war in Syria
caused a global movement of refugees, leading to 13,000 people crossing the German border
every day. This development presented an enormous challenge for German society and in
particular for politics and media. Journalists faced, among other things, the question, of how
to describe this mass of people, using phrases like “flood of refugees” or “wave of refugees”,
that compared people to a natural disaster rather than humans. This research proposal asks in
which way the German print media discursively constructed refugees and asylum seekers
during the refugee crisis in Germany between 2015 and 2017. By proposing the approach of
Critical Discourse Analysis the impact of linguistic patterns and the use of language in
general on the portrayal of refugees shall be demonstrated.

Social media and body issues in young adults: an empirical study on the influence of Instagram use on body image and fatphobia in catalan university students
Aziz, Jwana
Tutora: Pilar Medina Bravo
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
Body Image dissatisfaction and fatphobia are two concerns that are becoming increasingly
prominent in today’s generation. Previous research has demonstrated a viable link between
media exposure and an increased level of body image-related concerns. New media, most
notably social media, has introduced a new form of mediated rhetoric that needs to be accounted.
Social media applications such as the image-based platform known as Instagram allows for
immediate access to a plethora of idealized body images. According to statistics, the age group
of 16-24 are the most active Instagram users. This research proposal aims to conduct an
empirical investigation on the relationship between Social Media focusing on Instagram use with
body image dissatisfaction and fat phobia on Catalan undergraduate students. It is a 3 step
experimental research study with a sample of (n=200) male and female participants. Three scales
have been chosen to retrieve the data: Sociocultural Attitude towards Appearance
Questionnaire-3 (SATAQ-3; Thompson et al., 2004), Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire
(BIDQ; Cash et al., 2004) and Fat phobia scale (Bacon et al., 2001) and Instagram Use-related
questions.

Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
The debate between public and privatized media is well- known in media studies and a field
of an experiment by several states and enterprises. As the media is a major actor, if not the
major actor in public opinion shaping, it holds a strong power, issued by many academic
discussions. However, still without the result for a truly democratic media system, leaving a
question for the causation of this. Chile with a highly neoliberal economy and privatized media
system, compared with Venezuela, a "pink- tied government" which has experienced a
media transformation from privatized towards a public system, seem to be promising case
studies in this manner, appearing as two sides of the same coin. In order to contribute to the
debate if the democratization of the media is a utopia and evaluate the democratic level of
both cases studies a media accountability model will be created, that should be universally
applicable.

Diaspora 2.0: building identity with a selfie
Moré, Mireia
Tutor: Carles Roca Cuberes
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
This PhD proposal contains a literature review and methodology for a future research about the digital identity of the Senegalese and Gambian diaspora communities that currently live in Catalonia. I propose a virtual ethnographic approach for studying the Selfies (self-generated photographs) which are uploaded on Facebook and Instagram by particular individuals from the Senegalese and Gambian diasporic communities. The objective of the research is to study how the new Selfie phenomenon allows the Senegalese and Gambian diasporic communities in Catalonia to perform their identity and cultural behaviours through the new social media. The methodology is composed of a detailed Selfie and social media text analysis as well as a participant observation approach and virtual interviews. The expected outcomes are to understand how the social media allows for the creation of an imagined community in a globalized and interconnected context and to comprehend how the Selfie permits the self-representation of the diasporic communities.

This article proposes the discussion of the representation of immigrants from different cultures and races in advertising in Spain as a tool of social integration and improvement of the autochthonous self-esteem towards Spain, as it is their home. Through a mixed research including qualitative interviews, focus group and quantitative survey, this study analyzed the perception of presence and frequency of non-Spaniard people and raise the discussion of the necessity of their inclusion in campaigns. This study enabled the creation of a spot over diversity as a practical exercise of inclusion of different people in advertising developed and starred by teenagers of second generation of immigrants. The conclusion pointed an expressive perception of the necessity of including immigrants in advertising and also raised a reflection over the topic among the interviews and thus will do for future readers.

Negotiating conflict through digital storytelling: post-genocide reconciliation and peace education in Rwanda

Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
Many studies show that digital storytelling is a promising tool for education since it helps
student understand new concepts and complex issues through its interactive, participatory
and immersive techniques. As a result, using digital storytelling in peace education, which
serves as an alternative for tackling important issues such as reconciliation and healing
process, can be of important value for post-conflict societies. Given the limited amount of
research on peace education through digital storytelling in Rwanda, this research proposal
aims at analysing in which ways and to what extent digital storytelling can be used for
direct and indirect peace education among Rwandan students aged between 13 and 18. In
line with this purpose, seven transmedia and multimedia projects related to the Rwandan,
Bosnian, Guatemalan and Cambodian genocide have been selected in order to examine the
post-conflict reconciliation narratives. Additionally, these projects will be used in the
workshops designed to understand students’ interaction with stories and their approach to
the use of digital storytelling in peace education. The outcomes of this research will
provide a guideline for the implementation of digital storytelling in peace education with
the aim of facilitating post-conflict reconciliation.

Non-binary identity in feminist zines: media third spaces and oppositional consciousness
Mahr, Jake A.
Tutor: Pilar Medina Bravo
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
Despite numerous academic critiques of the normative identity dichotomies of gender (masculine vs. feminine), sex (male vs. female), sexuality (heterosexual vs. non-heterosexual), and race (white vs. non-white), many mainstream media practices fail to disrupt such binaries, often reinforcing stereotypes and underrepresenting (or misrepresenting) particular “othered” identities. This proposed research will take a turn at analyzing zines – small-scale, selfpublished, do-it-yourself booklets – in hopes of revealing specific rhetorical and discursive strategies used within the medium to articulate identities within or without a two-part identity binary, offering a “third space.” Qualitative content analysis will assign particular attention to examples of specific theoretical concepts founded in key academic literature on oppositional consciousness. Through such research, it may be possible to showcase zines as a potential media form that moves beyond binary systems of identification, having implications for future, more-inclusive mainstream media practices.

Discrimination or victimisation? The construction of asylum seekers in the norwegian print media – A critical discourse analysis of the “October Children” case

Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
This study seeks to investigate the representations of asylum seekers in the Norwegian print media by analysing the case of the “October children” in 2017. An exhaustive sample of the online coverage of the case has been gathered and examined through a critical discourse analysis, implementing the social actors approach by Van Leeuwen (2008). After reviewing the 24 news stories, this paper finds that the overall coverage tends to be negative portraying the October children as a political case where the asylum seekers are seen as passive, motionless, and figures that merely contributes to a political debate and rivalry between political parties. The study further concludes that the asylum seekers are portrayed with an emphasis on their rejection, where deportations is a major topic of debate. The findings suggest that the Norwegian press is responsible for creating and also maintaining certain stereotypes about asylum seekers.

Street harassment is a phenomenon which impacts women everywhere in the world. As women's speech got released after several media cases of sexual abuse on celebrites, social networks like YouTube relayed the information and became the new place to denounce all types of gender abuses. This study aims to explore the impact of YouTube French feminist videos on Frenc men's opinion through a qualitative research using both individual interviews and focus groups to compare participants' answers before and after having watched the videos. Results found out videos succeeded in deconstructing stereotypes and raising awareness about topics such as male domination in public places, the fear of women and solutions for bystanders when street harassment occurs. However, the lack of men's representation in the speech and radical ideas and tone of the speakers prevented men from getting the feeling of legitimacy to discuss the issue and dissuaded them to do further researches on the topic.

Lobbying for captivity: discourse and the legitimisation of zoos and aquaria
Mitra, Filip Ramesh
Tutor: Núria Almiron Roig
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
The present paper attempts to analyse the discourse of three lobbies representing the zoo and aquaria sector: The Iberian, the European and the worldwide zoo and aquaria associations. The objective of this study is to understand whether their discourse is speciesist, and how the use of language justifies the captivity of non-human animals, as well as to compare the discourses. The analysis has been conducted from a non-speciesist and nonanthropocentric perspective in an attempt to challenge the discursive strategies which legitimise the captivity of non-human animals. The methodological perspective applied is critical discourse analysis, focused on language as the source of power. As a result, the study reveals that the analysed discourse is highly speciesist and anthropocentric. The associations justify the captivity of non-human animals through their involvement in conservation programmes, and the supposed educational and research value of zoos and aquaria, while their discursive strategies only present minor differences.

Once upon a time… An analysis of the representation of nonhuman animals in young children’s literature
Niño Gómez, Gyslaine Natalia
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
Animals have always had a traditional place in children’s literature and they are encountered in almost every book. However, not much is said about the way in which they are represented. Thus, this study was initiated with the aim to fulfill such gap in the existing research. Using a qualitative approach and making use of the methods characteristic of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this investigation examines the representations of animals other than humans in popular children’s books both visually and textually in order to assess first, to what extent speciesism prevails in the stories; and second, how such representations invite young readers to conceive other animals. The selected sample comprises the best selling books of the Diada de Sant Jordi in 2017, given the importance of this festivity within the Catalan culture. Findings show how different species have been deprived of moral consideration, and the varied and multiple strategies that foster their instrumentalization. Therefore, they suggest the need for better narratives that could help children to conceive other animals in a holistic manner and, that moving away from the prevalent mainstream ideologies, could help in the reconfiguration of better human and nonhuman animal relationships in adult society.

The visual representation of civilians in images of the Israel - Palestine conflict in Israeli media
Peper, Myrthe
Tutor: Cristopher Tulloch
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
This study reports the findings of a visual content analysis of 196 photographs of the Israel - Palestine conflict representing civilians in the English language Israeli press. Overall, the newspapers used for analysis, Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post, represented Israeli and Palestinian civilians in a similar way. As it becomes evident from the codification of the sample photographs, the vast majority of the portrayed civilians in both newspapers is Palestinian. Findings show that Palestinians are shown to be the main victims of the conflict, resulting in many similar photographs of groups of Palestinian men protesting on the battlefield, while Israeli civilians are presented as the winners. A remarkable aspect of the pictorial coverage is that Arab Israelis and Palestinian women are not represented in the photographs of the conflict.

International Studies in Media, Power and Difference de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

Framing skeletons: peace journalism in documentaries about the conflict in Darfur
Dulski, Merlin
Tutor: Christopher Tulloch
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
In 1965 Johan Galtung proposed an alternative paradigm to traditional war journalism. The peace
journalism paradigm is built around four main pillars related to the functions of media frames as defined
by Entman (1993); defining the problem, identifying causes, making moral judgements and suggesting
remedies or solutions. The attention surrounding the war- and peace journalism debate has focussed
largely on the structural constraints in written press media, preventing peace journalism from really
challenging the dominant war journalism paradigm. But the digitalization of the media industry led to a
more widely available variety of sources about conflicts. There is a substantive lack of knowledge
surrounding peace Journalism in documentaries about war. In this study, a content analysis is performed
on four documentaries about the conflict in Darfur, Sudan. By combining Entman’s (1993) functions of
frames and the four pillars of peace journalism set out by Galtung (1965), it shows the opportunities and
challenges for peace journalism in documentaries about war.

Media coverage of the Crimean referendum in the biggest Spanish newspapers La Vanguardia, El País, and El Mundo
Gorbach, Romaniia
Tutor: Xavier Ramon Vegas
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
Ideological positioning of media resources is, first of all, an opportunity to understand how
editorials relate to conflict processes, especially if we are talking about international conflicts. For
the last six years, Ukraine has been in permanent military conflict with Russian-backed military
groups. The key point of this confrontation was the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in March
2014. This event has been recognized by the international community as the biggest crisis in
Europe since the end of the Cold War. Also, it was a big challenge for international media to cover
this conflict because of political and ideological influence. This research report determines the
predominant media frames used during the referendum in Crimea. It presents the results of a
qualitative and quantitative analysis of articles published one week before referendum in Crimea
and one week after in the biggest Spanish newspapers (La Vanguardia, El País and El Mundo) to
study each newspaper’s treatment of Ukrainian conflict as a part of global international agenda-
setting.

Called, not qualified: an Instagram analysis of evangelical NGOs in Uganda

Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
This research studies the Instagram accounts of two American-run Evangelical
Christian development NGOs in Uganda — Serving His Children and Amazima — to
investigate how they portray themselves and the people of their host community. A counter
analysis was also conducted on the Instagram of a Ugandan advocacy group, No White
Saviors, which has publicly accused both SHC and Amazima of doing more harm than
good. Instagram photos and their corresponding captions posted by the two NGOs from
2014 through 2018 were gathered analyzed through a multimodel content analysis.
Similarly, Instagram posts by No White Saviors from 2018 though 2019 were gathered and
analyzed. The analysis provides an overall view of the prevalence of the white savior
complex within the two organizations. Post frequently contain messages that being called
by God is more important than being qualified to provide relief to disadvantaged and
suffering communities.

“It would be kinder to shoot them”: a critical discourse analysis of the animals farmed series in The Guardian

Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
This study conducted a critical discourse analysis on the Animals farmed series in The
Guardian. To this end, the messages of the 196 articles from the launch of the series until
April 20, 2020 and 8 articles from outside the series were analysed. Predominantly, the
language of the series reinforces animal oppression by only asking how, not if, we should
farm nonhuman animals. Some articles in the series show farmed animals’ suffering and
workers’ ethical dilemmas, yet thorough challenges to animal oppression were only found
outside the series. Thus, the study identified an underlying welfarist ideology throughout
Animals farmed. Additionally, this study conducted a political economy analysis to explore
the economic pressures behind the series. This analysis revealed links to the animal industry
and philanthropy, which helps explain the findings. With these findings, the study contributes
to critical animal and media studies and to journalism fighting animal oppression.

The impact of social media influencers on male body image: How influencers shape male body image
Matzen, Philine Linh
Tutora: Ruth Rodríguez Martínez
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
The photo and video sharing application Instagram is one of the most important social media
platforms of the 21st century. It has become a significant source of daily inspiration and
motivation for many people. Influencers on the platform are a type of celebrity with an
immense impact on their viewers. This study underlines the triangular relationship between
Instagram influencer practices, audiences, and male body image. Representations of lean and
muscular male bodies on Instagram create an idealized image of masculinity and the male
body. The physique represented by male influencers sets a standard for the public, whose
internalization of this idealized body type manifests as a drive for body enhancement. Young
men’s exposure to these body-related images can result in body dissatisfaction, eating
disorders or steroid use.

Tutora: Pilar Medina-Bravo
imperantes.
This work examines the representation of the violence against women made by the
English-speaking reviewers of Big Little Lies (2017). It is argued that the paratextual
framing of fiction series serves as a space to think and understand audiovisual
representations, adaptations and cultural tensions around the violence against women
in television and cinema. Plotting key themes within the series' critical reception, this
study examines the strict and discursively constituted moral parameters within which
the visual representations of violence operate. More generally, this work draws on the
theoretical framework of cultural studies, feminist studies, and reception studies to
reveal how cultural intermediaries can function as agents of ideological struggle by
providing critical insight into dominant value systems at work regarding violence
against women or as agents that perpetuate the prevailing representations.

Madness through the Lens of the Beholder: the representation of mental illness in documentary films
Mohammad Azhar, Muhammad Danial
Tutor: Carles Roca Cuberes
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
Mental illness has long been stigmatized in society, not helped by generic and negative
representations in the media. Previous studies have shown the printing press, broadcasting media,
and popular cinema to largely depict the mentally ill as violent, dangerous, dysfunctional, and
worst of all, mad. The purpose of this study is to determine if documentary films are any different
in reproducing such images, or if they instead subvert the prejudices of mental illness. Through a
qualitative content analysis of 70 scenes, taken from 6 observational documentaries, the results
find that the sample of films expose the failings of institutional care and psychiatric practices.
Rather than focusing on how mental illness functions, these films separate the behavior of persons
with mental illness from their condition, showing them to be both mistreated and misunderstood.

ciertas estrategias discursivas patriarcales y silencian otras. Algunos discursos ocasionalmente

Beyond the modern film critic: an analysis of film paratexts and their relation to postfeminism
Akdurucak, Ceren
Tutora: Mercè Oliva
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
This paper examines how female superheroes are depicted in primary film paratexts – their
posters – in their solo movies that have been released in theaters in the past four years, namely,
Wonder Woman (2017), Captain Marvel (2019), Dark Phoenix (2019), Birds of Prey: And the
Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020). The goal is to understand the
relationship between postfeminism and the paratexts. Semiotics and iconography are applied to
the posters of the movies found on the official Instagram accounts of the films in order
deconstruct the meaning of the multimodal discourses present. The analysis of fourteen posters
shows that there are postfeminist tropes present in the posters and that they are examples of
femvertising too. This study draws attention to how postfeminist values are used by popular
culture paratexts, and it is intended to inspire broader research into this area.

The geometry of journalism
Bowen Bronet, Zohar Bearer
Tutor: Carles Roca Cuberes
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
Scholars from multiple disciplines have been studying various aspects of
journalism for nearly a century. The question of newsworthiness, what becomes news
and what does not, has always been an area of great interest. While many explanations
have been offered, all include varying degrees of psychology and teleology. So far, none
have approached the subject using sociologist Donald Black’s framework of pure
sociology. The paradigm predicts and explains the behavior of social life with the shape
of social space it occurs in, its geometry. Here, I apply Black’s model to the question of
newsworthiness to identify the social structures journalism occurs in, and how it
behaves within them. I then extend the model to the moral nature of journalism by
studying it as a form of social control. The result is a set of theoretical formulations
about the behavior of journalism, and a new sociological theory of journalism.

The chameleon-like usage of social media and acculturative stress: a qualitative study among Chinese students in Spain.

Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
In the context of globalization and the growing influence of social media, we have little
knowledge about the acculturation experience of Chinese people in Spain who hold both
student and foreigner identity, and the role of social media in such a setting is unclear. In order
to gain insight into these areas, thisstudy conducted online interviews with 15 Chinese students
in Spain. Through open coding and data analysis, seven kinds of gratifications obtained by
using social media in the context of cross-cultural adaptation were identified. The study also
found that Chinese students showed a chameleon-like pattern of switching between Western
and Chinese social media based on different motivations. In addition, the seven most common
sources of stress faced by Chinese students in Spain were discovered and an attempt was made
to understand the role of social media plays in their acculturation experiences.

Life after death: the discursive construction of Kobe Bryant and Caroline Flack post-death on Twitter
Reiner, Hope
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
The overall purpose of this study is to discover how the images of Kobe Bryant and
Caroline Flack are discursively constructed on Twitter post-death and what these differences and
similarities say about the construction of celebrity. The design of the study includes a
quantitative content analysis and qualitative thematic analysis of a sample of 100 tweets with 100
or more retweets for each celebrity after their deaths. The major findings of this study conclude
that the discourse for each celebrity is predominantly positive, however Kobe Bryant is
referenced positively more frequently in relation to his character and career while the discourse
surrounding Flack focuses on conflicts surrounding her death. Kobe Bryant is most commonly
referenced as talented, a legend, and an inspiration in reference to his career while being
referenced as a good guy, a family man, and someone larger than life in reference to his
character. Caroline is most commonly referenced when bashing the media for bullying her into
suicide. Conflicts relating to Bryant were minimal and referenced as something he overcame,
while Flack faced more scrutiny for her wrongdoings. These findings indicate that a celebrity’s
profession is linked with definitions of work and talent (definitions that are gendered).

Nowadays, children establish more bonds with nonhuman animals through their
representation in media than in real-life interactions. The portrayals of nonhumans are decisive
in the inculcation of speciesist ideologies and anthropocentric perspectives. This paper aims to
contribute to the body of literature on the portrayal of nonhumans in children-oriented content.
To this end, this paper reviews the pre-existing research on the portrayal of nonhuman animals
in media for children from a critical animal studies perspective and an anti-speciesist stance.
Most of the research done in the representation of nonhumans in media for children usually
maintains a human-centric perspective: the analyses focus on the interpretation of animals as
symbols and embodiment of human matters. The present paper finds that the employed amount
of anthropomorphizing can either generate empathy towards other species or disconnect
viewers from the represented animal through an excessive cutification. Overall, nonhuman
animals are represented in connection to human issues, within an instrumental continuum and
happily “consenting” to being used. Moreover, the persistent gendering of nonhumans includes
the projection of human heteronormativity onto nonhumans. Predominantly, the
acknowledgment of their individuality depends on the degree of stereotyping and if the
anthropomorphized traits include voice and naming.

The representation of the Rohingya refugee crisis: a comparative analysis of newspapers in Bangladesh, Myanmar, the UK and the USA
Mehtaz, Abonti
Tutor: Carles Roca Cuberes
Treball de fi de Màster Estudis Internacionals sobre Mitjans, Poder i Diversitat
This PhD proposal aims to conduct a comparative qualitative content analysis of 100 news
stories related to the Rohingya refugee crisis published in eight daily newspapers titled The Daily
Star, The Daily Naya Diganta, The Myanmar Times, The New Light of Myanmar, The New York
Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Telegraph and The Guardian respectively from Bangladesh,
Myanmar, the UK and the USA. The objectives of this research are to identify numerous framing
patterns of the representation of the Rohingya refugee crisis, to explore similarities as well as
differences among various types of framing and to discover whether political ideologies of the
selected newspapers somehow influenced the framing criteria of those selected stories. However,
the expected outcome of this study is to create awareness about various media framing of the
Rohingya refugee crisis and numerous factors responsible for those framing.

Menstrual narratives in the German public discourse:
‘Pinky Gloves’ – A case study
Klein, Carla
Tutora: Maria Pilar Medina-Bravo
Menstruation is a biological process that affects half of humanity – most of them women.
However, menstruation is more than just a physiological phenomenon, as it is linked to social
constructions and norms. Dominant menstrual narratives, including menstrual stigmas and
taboos, are constantly (re)produced and reinforced by (mediated) representations, depicting
menstruation as shameful, disgusting and something that should be hidden. Based on relevant
literature and empirical findings, this research paper analyses the discourse surrounding the
menstrual hygiene product ‘pinky gloves’. Through a qualitative content analysis of German
newspaper articles the dominant menstrual narratives: stigmatization, medicalization, and
commercialization haven been detected within the considered discourse. Menstrual taboos,
including both communication and activity taboos, are further highlighted within the presented
sample. By rather criticizing than reproducing menstrual stigmas and taboos the coverage
addressing the ‘pinky-gloves’, is disrupting the dominant menstrual discourse, intending to
normalize the stigmatized condition of menstruation.

Not your fandom, not your problem? Cosmopolitan solidarities and fissures among transnational K-pop fans
Janella, Paris

In this paper, I examine online negotiations of transnational fan identities through the K-pop boy
group Neo Culture Technology or NCT. Many studies have focused on how transnational
fandoms can foster intercultural understanding among fans, but few have sought to understand
the ways that pop culture products can re-inscribe racial and ethnic identities. This study
explores how this re-inscription happens on Twitter, as the social media site helps form digital
fan communities and enable their relationships with pop culture texts and each other. Through
an intertextual analysis of public tweets containing the hashtags #boycott_resonance,
#boycott_resonance, and #NCTApologize, I unpack how the issue within the fandom facilitates
performances of cosmopolitan identities. I argue that transnational fans perform and
instrumentalize cosmopolitan solidarities and cosmopolitan fissures for both fannish and political
ends through consumerist expectation, authentic marginalization, and fannish territorialization.
By extension, they collectively construct a cosmopolitan identity and ethics unique to fandom.

Objectivity, identity and proximity: how female journalists with migration background fight the anti-immigrant discourse in Austria

The aim of the study has been to examine the narratives and motifs that five female journalists with migration background employ to counteract the hegemonic anti-immigrant discourse in Austria. A multimethod approach, consisting of qualitative content analysis and semi-
structured interviews with the journalists was employed. The results were triangulated to provide an in-depth and nuanced answer to the research questions. The findings reveal that structural racism is the most pressing issue in the Austrian anti-immigrant discourse and one
way to counteract it is to grant visibility to the marginalized group. The study indicates more specific areas of structural racism, such as education, and provides tools and practices to counteract it. According to the findings, all the journalists in this study express scepticism to
the objectivity norm and stated that their own identity – being a woman with a migration background – heavily influences their coverage on the anti-immigrant discourse, because of the proximity they feel towards the realities of life of a marginalized group.

To profit or not to profit? A critical discourse analysis of a non-profit ‘unstoppable’ campaign contrasted with literature on commercial femvertising messages

The aim of this paper was to find out whether there is a difference between pro-feminist
messages in campaigns depending on their source of income and ultimate goal. To this end, I
did a literature review of pro-feminist commercial advertisement (femvertising) campaigns
and a Critical Discourse Analysis of the ‘Unstoppabale’ campaign by the Global Fund for
Women, a non-commercial, non-government organization that helps fund feminist initiatives
around the world. I then compared my findings in the discussion section. The results have
shown that both types of campaigns employ a neo-liberal rhetoric, but with different focus.
The commercial campaigns focus more on individuality, consumerism and freedom of choice
for women, while the non-commercial campaigns stress the importance of female
empowerment for the development of the economy and prosperity of communities. These
findings can be used by both marketing specialists and NGO campaign writers to adjust their
messages when they concern women’s rights.

The introduction of Virtual Reality technologies into documentary filmmaking in the previous
decade has brought about opportunities for emotionally compelling narratives to be constructed
surrounding various social issues in hopes to raise more awareness and provoke real change.
However, it is important to remember that just like any other media format, immersive 360-
degree documentaries are nonetheless produced and consumed within the hegemonic Euro-
American human rights spectacle which lays at the core of all contemporary humanitarian
communication practices. Thus, through a qualitative analysis of three immersive 360-degree
documentaries, this research study aims to provide critical insight into the current modes of
immersive documentary making about refugees and/or displacement.

This study aimed to contribute to the current literature on the awareness of and the methods
against disinformation. It has tried to do so by conducting a quantitative research analysis on
the perceptions of three generations, X, Y, and Z, towards the issue of intentional false
information spreading within the Bulgarian media. A questionnaire in both English and
Bulgarian languages has been distributed to a sample of the Bulgarian population and has
reached a total number of 238 completed surveys. The paper provides a detailed analysis on
the results for each separate age group through easy-to-read graphs and charts showing precise
statistics from the questionnaire results. Thus, through a thorough comparison of the findings,
the research draws some relevant conclusions which should hopefully prove to be beneficial
and bridge the current gap in the literature.

Old stereotypes, new media. The representation of female terrorists in alternative news media

In the past two decades, the attention for terrorism in the news has exploded. But an
omnipresent belief about terrorism brought by media, is that all terrorists are male, and women
do not fit the terrorist profile. However, women have always been actively participating in
terrorist groups across the world and a more accurate representation of female terrorists is
therefore needed. This proposal is grounded in media and gender studies and will provide more
insights into the representation of female terrorists in alternative news media. An extensive
literature review and methodology resulted in a pre-tested analytical framework, providing the
tools for future research on this topic. The expected outcomes will be further understanding the
construction and definition of female terrorists in alternative news media compared to the
coverage of mainstream media, which fills in an important gap in the existing literature on this
topic.

This study investigates the online news framing of the police and protesters by
looking at three protests in late 2020 and early 2021: the Sarah Everard vigil in London, the
47th Polytechnic Rally in Athens and the imprisonment of rapper Pablo Hasel in Barcelona.
A total sample of 114 articles was gathered from two news outlets per case: The Guardian
and The Telegraph for the vigil, EFSYN and Kathimerini for the rally, and El País and ABC
for the Hasel protests. A qualitative content analysis guided by framing theory was
conducted. Two main frames in relation to police actions were identified: the ‘police
brutality’ frame and the ‘order-maintenance’ frame. The framing of the protesters appeared to
be much more fragmented while two frames—‘health hazard’ and ‘victim’—characterised
both groups on different occasions. Overall, this study found the framing to be dependent on
the protest’s perceived level of deviance.

Within the state of war with Russia, Ukraine faces an extremely complex social and political
situation. In this scenario, Ukrainian journalism suffers a difficult situation that could be
affecting the democratic role of the profession and undermining fundamental rights. This
study investigates the peculiarities of the current state of Ukrainian journalism and pays
special attention to the impact on it of propaganda and oligarchy media ownership. In
particular, the paper aims to advance knowledge on how the recent blocking of Ukrainian TV
channels affects journalists' professional activities, and the right to freedom of speech in the
country. To meet this goal, in-depth literature review, analysis of secondary data and
semi-structured online interviews with Ukrainian journalists are conducted. Results show that
the private interests of media owners and the blocking of the TV channels affect journalism
in undesirable ways, including a degradation of the right to freedom of speech in Ukraine.

Grime is a musical genre born at the beginning of the 21st century, in poor and
unattended areas of East London. Influenced by genres such as Hip Hop, Reggae and Dancehall,
the new music style became a movement and culture allowing the African-Caribbean British
younger generations to gain a sense of identity and belonging. Often accused by hegemonic
power of perpetuating crime and violence, Grime will be analysed in this study through different
lenses such as subcultural studies, critical race theory and ethnography in order to showcase the
benefits of the music genre and its transcendence for the disenfranchised Black British
population.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has taken place across various arenas and social media has
undoubtedly become a major battlefield that draws global attention. Many key media players
including legacy outlets such as The Guardian and The New York Times, counter-hegemonic
media represented by news platforms like Al-Jazeera and France24, NGOs and activists as well
as official government spokespersons employ social networking sites to share information and to
fight for public opinion. This paper looks at these four groups and their online engagements
concerning two key recent episodes in the Israeli-Palestinian crisis -Sheikh Jarrah and Nakba74-
and reveals how this battle takes place not only in real life but also through social media such as
Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Moreover, the analysis of the hashtags is conducted to indicate
which side of the conflict gains more attention on these platforms.

Involuntary celibates or voluntary terrorists? The media coverage of misogynistic incel mass violence in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom (2014-2021). A critical discourse analysis
Ágoston, Dorottya Luca
Tutor: Christopher Tulloch
The misogynistic-extremist involuntary celibate (incel) movement – as well as the threat it
poses to both national security and to the lives of (primarily) women – is growing and
globalising. Since 2014 approximately fifty people have lost their lives to misogynistic mass
violence. Still, adequate responses to the problem are missing on both policy and societal
levels. Since the media not only represents our reality but also creates this very reality itself,
changing the framing journalists employ in their reporting of misogynistic mass violence
carried out by (mostly white) male perpetrators can have a positive effect on both our societal
perception of and our governmental and policy responses to the incel issue and in general to
the way we approach violence against women. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to
examine the general patterns emerging from how mainstream media reports on male
supremacist mass violence in order to urge change.

‘The sex lives of college girls’. A case study about sexual consent communication in teen shows
Bachmann, Tamara Natascha
Tutora: Pilar Medina-Bravo
Within debates about sexual violence one concept has increasingly moved to the
fore - sexual consent. As consent is closely tied to power dynamics within
heteronormative discourses, its negotiation depends on the people involved and how
they communicate, define, and experience sexual consent. Moreover, previous
research suggests that adolescents tend to get information about certain facets of
sexuality from television. Hence, this case study aims to analyse how sexual consent
communication is depicted in teen shows, in particular, in the show ‘The Sex Lives
Of College Girls’ (HBO Max, 2021). In the scope of content analysis, this research
applies a codebook by Jozkowski et al. (2016) to analyse 28 scenes of 10 episodes
of the show. The most common consent and refusal communication cues were
implicit verbal and explicit nonverbal cues.

“I was born wrong”: sexualised self-presentation
of teenage TikTok influencers and its effects on
their communities
Adolescence is a period of life when teenagers develop senses of identity and belonging.
In that context, social media has become a prominent environment for teenagers to
exercise their self-expressions, as they have been spending increasing amounts of time
on these platforms. Previous research suggests, however, that adolescents’ self-
presentation on social media may trigger tendencies of self-objectification and sexualisation.
These conducts can entail various mental health disturbances – especially among girls.
Through an ethnographic immersion in the TikTok profiles of Luara Fonseca and Gabrielle
Severino (a.k.a. Melody), this research explored the sexualised self-presentation of teenage
influencers on TikTok and how their audiences reacted to this content. The study explores
the extensive impact that social media platforms may take on young people. Its findings
may generate insight on how to make social media a safer environment for young people.

Beautiful suffering? An analysis on young people’s narratives of their experiences with mental illness on TikTok

The aim of this paper is to investigate how youth depict their personal experiences with
mental illness on TikTok. For this purpose, the following research question is posed: How do
TikTok users depict their personal experiences with mental illness?
To answer the research question, a qualitative content analysis of TikTok videos was
conducted. The qualitative content analysis revealed that youth depict their experiences with
mental illness on TikTok by incorporating and connecting elements of pop culture to their
own narratives and make use of several aestheticization techniques to convey their narratives.
It is shown that both the appropriation of pop culture elements and narrative styles and the
structure of the TikTok App contribute significantly to the aestheticization of youths'
personal narratives about their experiences with mental illness. Based on this, further
research is recommended to explore what impact these narratives may have on other
adolescent users.

in The New York Times’ coverage between the time frame 2000-2022, and how their
coverage/representation reproduces anthropocentric speciesism. A qualitative content
analysis is conducted to inspect news media coverage of invasive species in The New
York Times. The results find a clear maleficent and threatening framing of invasive
species in this newspaper. Especially metaphors and allusions to anthropocentric
concepts are found to be present as framing tools. Discussion section further explores
how these results can be interpreted as a reinforcement of speciesist ideology and

There's more than one way to peel a potato: how speciesism is reinforced in plant-based meat alternative marketing through the ‘overt referent’
Kloft, Hannah
Environmental, ethical, and animal defense reasons have led to a rise in the consumption
of plant-based meat alternatives. The marketing of these products, however, can reinforce
speciesist tropes. While attempts to sell animal products are often oriented at hiding the origin of
the meal from the consumer through the ‘absent referent’, I explore what I call the ‘overt referent’:
the commodification of the consumption, characteristics, and consent of nonhuman animals to sell
plant-based meat alternatives. The paper attempts to lay the theoretical basis of speciesism and
expand on the theory of the overt referent through a case study of plant-based meat producer The
Vegetarian Butcher. Conclusions include strong evidence for the existence of the overt referent
and feedback on the theory is given by the coiner of the ‘absent referent’ theory Carol J. Adams.

Defund, Reform, Abolish: an analysis of the media coverage of the police
and prison abolition movement in the United States
Mortensen, Sara
Tutor: Carles Roca-Cuberes
Critiques of the systems of justice and punishment in the United States are not new,
but are experiencing unprecedented momentum after the murder of George Floyd by a
Minneapolis police officer in May of 2020. After this event sparked protests against police
brutality across the globe, it sparked something else: increased attention on the police and prison
abolition movement and a national conversation around the reimagining of the systems of
policing and imprisonment in the United States. This study analyzes how recent attention on the
police and prison abolition movement has been covered by the media in the United States,
specifically how coverage differs depending on the locality and political leanings of the news
source.

The flavors of sexual liberation: exploring the normalization and dangers of
Non-Vanilla Sex and relationship portrayals on TikTok
Gay, Emily Dianne
Tutora: Dra. Pilar Medina-Bravo
This thesis explores how the theories of postfeminism, neoliberalism, social learning, and
sexual scripting contribute to the normalization of toxic, abusive, non-vanilla sex and
relationships, especially as it is seen on TikTok. Though it delves into the roles that erotic novels
and pornography play in the perpetuation of this phenomenon, this thesis mainly focuses on how
women on TikTok exemplify the postfeminist, neoliberal ideals of sexual empowerment and
freedom of choice. It also highlights how TikTok’s popularization of a modified traditional
sexual script results in the shaming of conventional sex practices and the acceptance of sexual
violence against women.

Existing is resisting: a decolonial path on brazilian audiovisual ‘Medida Provisória’
Melo Braga, Ana Luiza
Tutora: Dra. Pilar Medina-Bravo
Drawing a decolonial turn from a non-Iberian perspective, this essay explores the Brazilian
dystopian audiovisual narrative ‘Medida Provisória’ through the lens of decoloniality, and the
representative symbol of malandragem. In this analysis, the paper aims to subvert the
mainstream locus of enunciation by putting the marginalized identities as the departure point
and analyzing, through a decolonial frame, a different portrayal of malandragem in
audiovisual. Understanding it as an act of resistance towards a society inside the
modernity-coloniality way of thinking, the movie opposes the mainstream perpetuation of the
problematic social classification of people we have settled today. Opening a dialogue
between a decolonial dystopia and a colonial reality narrative, defying the dominant
oppressive order, reinforcing African-Brazilian culture, and embodying a Brasil that can
never be white or European. Malandragem is the response of an invented people that will
keep reinventing themselves to be seen and valued within their terms.

A thematic analysis of asians in beef: stereotypical portrayals or subverting expectations?
This study utilized a thematic analysis and looked at Netflix’s TV series Beef. It looks
at the representation of Asians/Asian Americans and identifies if the characters’ traits
are stereotypical or not. The literature review includes studies about model minority,
perpetual foreigner, and the over/de-sexualization of Asian men and women. In
these results, it talks about the portrayal of these characters having more emotional
depth, familial pressures to be providers for the family, and rich vs. poor depictions of
asians. Overall, Beef humanized Asian/Asian American characters that both defied
and conformed to antiquated stereotypes.

Cutting the cord: examining social hierarchies and public perception of “Full Surrogacy” labour industries
Bajs, Vanda
Tutor: Carles Roca-Cuberes
Both transnational gestational surrogates (TGS) and migrant nannies are
economically exploited, socially marginalised and engage in kinning beyond genetics. Yet,
academically speaking, these roles were never put in comparison to one another. Previous
research mainly focused on analysing self-perceptions of the two roles or examining their
media framings, without much probing into audience interpretations. Hence, through
semi-structured interviews with the general public, the research will analyse how the roles of
TGS and migrant nannies differ/overlap and whether there is an existing social hierarchy
amongst them. Furthermore, by exposing members of the public to media framings through
documentaries in focus group discussions, the research will examine whether the initial
social imaginaries of TGS and migrant nannies can be altered. The results of my PhD thesis
will incentivise conducting further research on internal hierarchies in the care sector and
demonstrate the permeability of media framings in documentaries on care labour issues.

Productive paradise? Postcolonialism, the digital nomad phenomenon, and the portrayal of Southeast Asia on YouTube
Bagalay, Carmelrose
Southeast Asia has become a popular digital nomad destination. The rise of the digital nomad
phenomenon can be seen as a shift in the landscape of labor in which technology has enabled
location-independent remote work. Digital nomads actively engage in promoting this lifestyle
through self-branding in social media platforms such as YouTube. As such, their online content
provides a site in which to examine their online identity to understand how this shapes their
portrayal of Southeast Asia. Using thematic analysis, this paper identifies interconnected themes
in both the online self-presentation of digital nomads and their portrayal of Southeast Asia. By
using a postcolonial approach, this paper explores what inequalities and imbalances rooted in
colonial legacies are present in this contemporary media representation of Southeast Asia.

From pandemic solidarity to industrial action hostility: british media representations of workers during Covid-19 and the 2022-23 strikes
Collinson, Daniel
Tutor: Christopher D. Tulloch
The study investigated and compared the British media's framing of workers during two
months of the Covid-19 pandemic and two months of the 2022-23 strikes. A qualitative content
analysis was conducted of 160 articles from The Guardian, The Independent, The Times and The
Telegraph. The research revealed that during the Covid-19 pandemic, the media utilised three
dominant frames regarding workers: a Precarity frame, a Solidarity frame and a Hero frame. During
the 2022-23 strikes, a Villain frame, a Precarity frame and a Conflict frame dominated the media’s
coverage of workers. Guided by theories of disaster capitalism and crisis, the research indicated that
the support shown for workers during the Covid-19 pandemic turned into vilification as workers began
going on strike and asking for pay increases.

A critical gaze at the image of woman in cinema: theoretical exploration of feminist film theories
Mohajer-Taleghani, Sanaz
Tutor: Pilar Medina-Bravo.
This theoretical dissertation examines theories and concepts which explore the
construction of the image of Woman in Hollywood cinema. By using an imaginary scene, this
paper intends to explore the ethics and implications of depiction, examine the sphere of theories
related to the image of Woman, and inspect cinema’s participation in disseminating this image.
The research draws from a wide range of fields, observing the connections of the theories in
place rather than an in-depth look into a specific concept in cinema. This critical exploration
includes broad strokes of film theories, feminist film theories, post-feminism, neoliberal
feminism, with more specification on theories of objectification, surveillance, power,
representation, male gaze, gender construction, femininity, female sexuality, and
intersectionality.

The outsider’s gaze in documentary: is a decolonial approach to ‘Otherness’ a possibility?
Reijnen, Ambra
Tutor: Manel Jimenez Morales.
This thesis explores the ethics of filming in a community to which the documentarian does not belong.
The study enquires whether, in spite of an outsider’s gaze, a decolonial approach to ‘otherness’ in
documentary is a possibility. This is done by dissecting the objectifying practices within visual
technologies that have historically created ‘otherness’ in the first place, touching upon concepts such
as hegemony, the creation of the Self and the Other, the gaze, representation, and stereotypes.
Decolonial thought(s) offer insightful clues for the dilemma of authoriality and entitlement to film the
Other, as well as potential decolonial approaches to apply to documentary. To illustrate some of the
decolonial approaches, ethnographic documentaries by Safi Faye, Trinh T. Minh-Ha and Stephanie
Spray will be analysed.
