This Master Project scrutinizes the underlying theoretical arguments within Bayraktar and Yang’s (2011) (4) model and tests if it is robust with newer 2017 data. We demonstrate all the related strong mathematical foundations to understand their model. We also observe that the matching between the observed and estimated data is not as good as expected with the Ford Motor Company data yet being better for the SPX Index data. Thus we claim for the model to be improved with more recent research.

This Project evaluates the forecasting performance of a Brownian Semi-Stationary (BSS) process in modelling the volatility of 21 equity indices. We implement a sophisticated Hybrid Scheme to simulate BSS processes with high efficiency and precision. These simulations are useful to price derivatives, accounting for rough volatility. Then we calibrate the BSS parameters for the realised kernel of 21 equity indices, using data from the Oxford-Man Institute. We conduct one- and ten-step ahead forecasts on six indices and find that the BSS outperforms our benchmarks, including a Log-HAR specification, in the majority of cases.

Partial adjustment in policy functions of structural models of capital structure
Bongini, Mattia
Treball fi de màster de: Master's Degree in Economics and Finance
Director: Filippo Ippolito
We present a tradeoff model of capital structure to investigate the sources of adjustment costs and study how firms' financing decisions determine partial adjustment toward target leverage ratios. The presence of market imperfections, like taxes and collateral constraints, is shown to play a decisive role in the behavior of the policy function of capital and leverage. By means of a contraction argument, we are able to show the existence of a target leverage towards which optimal leverage converges with a speed of adjustment that depends on a firm marginal productivity of capital. Our predictions are consistent with the empirical literature regarding both the magnitude of the speed of adjustment and the relationship between leverage ratios and the business cycle.

This paper investigates whether and how geographical distance matters for bank lending
within and between countries in the European Union. We estimate gravity-type
regressions in various specifications, incorporating novel econometric insights which
have thus far not been applied in the context of bank lending. Using re-cently published,
disaggregated data on banks’ credit exposures from the European Banking Authority,
we find the elasticity of lending with respect to distance to be -1.42 in our main
specification. Controlling for various factors, the negative rela-tionship remains
persistent. We argue that this relationship is largely attributable to information costs,
though cultural and historical ties between countries, capital requirements, local
competition and cross-border trade also play a role. The analy-sis highlights the enduring
influence of factors which prevent full European financial integration.

financera europea.

We investigate the effects of intellectual property products capital in the evolution of the labor share for five European countries. Using post-revision national accounts data, we construct a benchmark labor share with the contribution of both traditional and IPP capital, against which we measure a counterfactual LS which isolates the effects of IPP. We report that the labor share in Austria, France, Germany, and Spain has been consistently declining, with high variation across countries. Our results show that part of this decline is explained by the inclusion and growing importance of IPP capital in the economy. A closer look at France reveals that the main channels through which IPP has an impact on the labor share are a higher depreciation rate and investment flow relative to traditional capital.

We investigate a possible gender gap in returns to education using data from the World Bank’ STEP program for seven developing and emerging countries. We control for cognitive skills, non-cognitive skills and parental education - previously unobserved due to unavailability of data - to investigate how this heterogeneity is playing a role in estimating the gender differential in educational returns. We also model selection using the Heckman two-step estimation procedure to examine whether selection may be driving this phenomenon. Our findings suggest that gender gaps in returns to education are not as prominent in the countries in our sample as previously suggested. We also
find that controlling for unobserved heterogeneity on the one hand, and selection on the other, has different effects in different countries, highlighting the importance of understanding individual countries’ labour markets in detail before drawing conclusions regarding the existence of a gender gap in returns to education.

This paper empirically investigates the impact of forward guidance announcements on inflation expectations in the Eurozone. The ECB first resorted to forward guidance on July 4, 2013 thereby expanding its array of unconventional policy instruments in the vicinity of the zero-lower bound. We use an ARCH model and identify forward guidance shocks as changes in the 2-year nominal ECB yield on specific announcement days to measure changes in daily inflation swaps of different maturities. In the process, we also separately identify the effect of quantitative easing and interest rate change announcement shocks. We find that forward guidance was successful in reviving inflation expectations in the medium to long term. Analyzing the transmission channels of forward guidance, we find evidence that both a reanchoring channel and a portfolio effect might have been at play.

In the wake of the global financial crisis that began in 2007, central banks throughout the world engaged in unprecented amounts of monetary policy aimed at stimulating their respective economies. One frequent comment from financial operators during this period is that the effectiveness of these efforts was reduced by the fact that central banks policies were also encouraging firms to borrow in order to repurchase their own shares rather than investing. In this paper, we put the hypothesis that loose monetary encourages share repurchases to the test by analyzing the response of S&P500 firms to perceived changes in Federal Reserve Bank policies. We find significant evidence supporting this hypothesis, and find some evidence supporting the hypothesis that firms may be borrowing in order to finance these repurchases.

This paper aims to empirically analyze how changes in systemic risk, measured by the Composite Indicator of Systemic Stress (CISS), can affect banking liquidity and funding. We focus on and provide critical analysis of the maturity mismatch evolution, an indicator of liquidity, which is of integral importance for the well functioning and stability of the financial system. For that purpose, we use the Panel VAR approach to carry out Impulse Response Functions to compare the effect between stress and non stress countries.

How do local populations respond to a large-scale influx of refugees? This paper studies the European refugee crisis and its effects on anti-refugee sentiments in Germany. To identify the causal effects of refugee presence, we exploit the fact that a large number of refugees were hosted in military buildings decommissioned prior to the refugee crisis. Using these inactive military buildings as an instrument, we analyse the effects of refugees on far-right voting, violence against refugees, and the spread of fake news. We find that a one-standard-deviation increase in the number of refugees hosted in a district leads to a 3.4 percentage points decrease in the vote share of the far-right party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in the 2017 election. Furthermore, districts with more refugees experience proportionally less violence against refugees. However, we find no clear effect on the spread of fake news. Overall, our results indicate that the presence of refugees does not inflame anti-refugee sentiments, but rather weakens them - findings that are consistent with the contact hypothesis.

Since the Great Recession, macroeconomic literature has highlighted the role of agents’ expectations in determining real economic dynamics. The aim of this paper is to study the role of media coverage of negative economic events in shaping these expectations. In particular, we try to estimate the causal effect of the relative amount of newspapers crisis-related articles on the Consumer Confidence Index across 22 European OECD countries in the period from 2005 to 2017. We estimate a fixed effects model using what we call “distracting events” as our instrumental variables, and we compute the standard errors with three different methods. In the first stage regressions, we are able to find a statistically significant coefficient for the instrument “Number of deaths in natural disasters weighted by geographical distance”, but the Stock and Yogo F-test does not lead us to a convincing conclusion over the strength of such instrument. Therefore, no evidence for a causal effect of the media coverage on consumer confidence can be deduced in the second stage regressions.

We identify contemporaneous and Granger-causal linkages between the 86 biggest companies, representing both the financial and real sectors, of the Eurozone economy that serve as paths of shock transmission. Network analysis lends itself very naturally to the study of systemic risk due to its preoccupation with interconnections and notions of centrality. We employ an estimation methodology introduced by Barigozzi and Brownlees (2018) using market data for daily volatilities from the Eurostoxx index. Our results are in line with the existing literature - the banking sector is found to be highly interconnected and responsible for most Granger-network spillovers. Moreover, only a small subset of firms appear to Granger-cause other residual volatilities, providing support for regulators’ targeting of Systemically Important Financial Institutions.

This paper evaluates the calibration method of the Heston model presented by Alòs, De Santiago, and Vives (2015). We propose a slightly more efficient configuration of the optimization procedure by introducing initial bounds on parameters. Using an extensive simulation study we generally obtain parameter estimates in agreement with true values. In an empirical application carried out onto high-frequency option data the calibration method fails to generate satisfactory results. Nonetheless, we conclude that similarly simple calibration methods as the one examined here should be used in combination with more sophisticated option pricing models.

This paper simulates the value premium anomaly under neoclassical framework of investment adapted from Zhang (2005) calibrated with standard, high and low capital structure specifications and leverage settings. Our model generates (1) the value premium in different magnitude, (2) a non-linear relationship of the Sharpe ratio and capital share. (3) When debt is introduced, the model accounts for a positive HML, however lower with respect to the base-line model.

We study the effects of the #BlackLivesMatter movement on the law abiding behavior of African-Americans. First, we derive a conceptual framework to illustrate changes in risk perceptions across different races. Second, we use data from the Illinois Traffic Study Data Set to investigate race ratios in police stops. For identification, we apply a linear probability OLS regression on media coverage as well as an event study framework with specific cases. We find that the number of black people committing traffic law violations is significantly reduced after spikes in media coverage and notable police shootings. In the latter case, we further find that the effect holds for an approximate ten day period. We argue that these observed changes in driving behavior are a result of the updated risk beliefs.

Weak identification is known to yield unreliable standard instrumental variables inference. A large literature has focused on addressing this issue by proposing methods to detect weak instruments, mainly through the first-stage F-statistic. This paper evaluates the weak identification in two leading empirical analyses by using the novel alternative approach developed by Ganics, Inoue and Rossi (2018), who base their tests on confidence intervals for the bias of the two-stage least squares estimator, and the size distortion of the associated Wald test. We illustrate the behavior of the tests in empirical settings, and compare how the conclusions differ to those using the standard tests. Our findings suggest that, in our empirical application, the results obtained using this approach are in line with those using previous tests in the literature, confirming it to be a robust alternative. An R package to directly compute these novel tests is also presented.

SABR : a stochastic volatility model in practice

The Black and Scholes model (BS) assumes that the volatility of an asset is constant over the trading period. As a result, BS returns a flat volatility surface. This assumption fails to capture the asset’s volatility dynamics (smile), which is particularly important if we want to price complex derivatives. Local Volatility (LV) models captures the volatility smile, but not the price dynamics. In this project, we study the SABR (Stochastic Alpha, Beta, Rho) model, a stochastic volatility (SV) model designed to describe the implied volatility (IV) surface capturing both the smile and price dynamics. We calibrate its parameters, compute the IV using its closed-form solution and Monte Carlo Methods (MCM), and compare our results with real market data. Finally, we discuss our results and their implementations to practitioners.

This paper aims to find a pattern in the evolution of altruistic and cooperative behaviour whilst distinguishing across different types of schools in Spain. In specific, we design a controlled laboratory experiment by running the standard dictator game and a public goods game in a public and private ("concertada") high school. Using a sample of 180 students, we compare 12 and 16 year old children to distinguish the evolutionary pattern and test if there is a significant change by the type of schooling system. Interestingly, evidence from our data highlights that altruism levels rise throughout public high-school education whilst it falls in private high-schools. On the contrary, cooperation levels are relatively stable in public high-schools but rise in private high-schools.

In this paper, we characterize a variety of financial markets as partially correlated networks of stock returns via the implementation of the joint sparse regression estimation techniques of Peng et al. (2009). We find that Markowitz portfolios generally dissuade the inclusion of central stocks in the network, yet the interaction of a stock's individual and systemic performance is more complex. We implement a number of investment strategies aimed at simplifying the portfolio selection process, contingent on the time-varying network dynamics. We find that applying mean-variance allocation to a restricted sample of stocks can statistically significantly enhance out-of-sample portfolio performance in comparison to a benchmark. We also find evidence that such portfolios are more resilient during periods of macroeconomic instability.

Is financial globalization beneficial to economies at all levels of development? Or are there certain “threshold” levels of financial, institutional and economic development a country must first attain in order to realize the growth benefits of globalization? Kose, Prasad and Taylor (2009) develop a unified empirical framework to answer this question. The debate on the literature is ongoing. Yet few studies have explored these questions in a post-crisis context. In this paper, we replicate and extend their work, paying close attention to the period 2005-2014. Our analysis yields three key results. First, the financial depth threshold above which countries can benefit from financial globalization increases from 66% to 81% when we consider the extended period. Second, the proportion of countries with depth levels above this threshold declines over time. Finally, the coefficients are smaller in absolute value over the period 1975-2014. Taken together, these results imply a breakdown in the relationship between financial depth, openness and growth since the Great Recession. Financial deepening on its own can no longer ensure positive growth effects of financial integration.

After five decades of sustained growth, the Irish housing market experienced a precipitous crash in the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis in 2007. Our paper examines the short- and long-run dynamics between rental and sale markets from 2006 to 2018. We investigate the role of credit constraints and housing supply in explaining the dynamics in rental and sale prices. Our analysis is the first to study dynamics between sale and rental markets using quality-adjusted time series constructed from microdata. We document a long-run relationship between rental and sale prices. In the short-run, we find that the sale and rental markets became more segmented as a result of the crisis. Our results indicate financial constraints and housing supply are strongly cointegrated with both rental and sale markets in long-run.

We offer a novel approach to investigate the extent to which the expansion of the sharing economy is responsible for increases in long-term rents and prices on the housing market. Using a panel of quarterly data on newly signed rental contracts and transaction prices in Barcelona from 2015-Q2 to 2018-Q4, we implement a fixed-effects spatial 2SLS method allowing for endogeneity in the variable which measures the presence of Airbnb. We find that a 100-unit increase in the number of Airbnb listings in a given neighborhood induces a 2.1% increase in rents. We find no indication that Airbnb affects transaction prices.

Exposure to air pollution is a common cause of health conditions which worsen Covid-19 patient outcomes. Using cross-sectional count data, we investigate the effect of long-term pollution exposure (PPPP2.5) on Covid-19 mortality rates and intensive care unit admission rates across France. We find that a one-unit increase in atmospheric PPPP2.5 concentration raises the mortality rate by 22%, the ICU admissions rate by 11% and the hospital admissions rate by 14%. These estimates suggest that a marginal increase in pollution resulted on average in 61 deaths and created a 1-million-euro surcharge in intensive care treatments (from March 19th to May 25th).

Effects of syndication on investment performance

Director: Albert Banal-Estañol
In venture capital, two or more venture capitalists (VC) often form syndicates to participate in the same financing rounds. Historically, syndicated investments have been found to have a positive effect on the investment performance. The paper provides insight into the effects of syndication on the likelihood of a successful exit for the venture-backed firm. It addresses the possible driving components such as the composition of the syndicates and, in particular, the internal investment funds being classed as external firms in two of the four models proposed, as well as a relaxation on the definition of investment round. One of the main conclusions is that in the analysis, using the chance of exiting and money in minus money out as success factors, syndication coefficients across all models are shown to have a higher chance of exiting. This supports the Value-add hypothesis and opposes the alternative, the Selection hypothesis, as it proposes that syndicated VC firms bring varying expertise to the project in order to increase the success factors post-investment. The paper advises to proceed with caution as the story is not consistent across the analysis.

Using firm-level data from Spain, we investigate robot abandonment, a phenomenon neglected by the literature, and find that a substantial proportion of robot adoption is non-permanent. We also find that (i) firms are most likely to derobotize shortly after robotization; (ii) derobotization rates are higher among smaller firms; and (iii) labor demand falls after derobotization. We develop a model of reversible automation in which firms learn the costs of using robots only after they first adopt them. We simulate a panel of firms that match the data and demonstrate that analyses of automation which ignore abandonment can overestimate the effects of automation.

Our results show that when we combine bandit algorithms with methodologies that take account of the non-normal distribution of returns, portfolio performance improves. Our results show that if contextual bandit algorithms applied to portfolio choice problem, given enough context information about the financial environment, they can consistently obtain higher Sharpe ratios compared to classical methodologies, which translates to fully automated portfolio allocation framework.

Stealth trading in modern high-frequency markets

Previous research has identified stealth trading by informed participants as a primary driver of price discovery in equity markets. Using two distinct empirical approaches, this paper extends the stealth trading literature by analyzing price contribution from trades of several different characteristics with a particular focus on the role of high-frequency traders (HFTs).
Our results support conclusions from prior work arguing that small trades play an outsized role in price discovery at the daily level, and also suggest that HFTs correctly anticipate price movements and engage in stealth trading over the session and at higher frequencies, thus driving price formation.

In order to analyse whether financial conditions are relevant downside risk predictors for the 5% Growth at Risk conditional quantile, we propose a Dynamic Factor- GARCH Model, comparing it to the two most relevant approaches in the literature. We conduct an out-of sample forecasting analysis on the whole sample, as well as focusing on a period of increased European integration after the 2000s. Always, including the national financial conditions index, term structure and housing prices for 17 European countries and the United States, as down side risk predictors. We find evidence of significant predicting power of financial conditions, which, if exploited correctly, becomes more relevant in times of extraordinary financial distress.

We develop early warning models for systemic crises prediction using machine learning techniques on macrofinancial data for 36 countries for quarterly data spanning 1970-2013. Machine learning models outperform logistic regression in out-of-sample predictions under the recursive window forecasting mechanism. In particular, using the ensemble random forest algorithm for both feature selection and prediction substantially outperforms the logit models. We identify the key economic and financial drivers of our models using the random forest framework by extracting each feature’s Gini impurity and corresponding information gain. Throughout the time period, the most important predictors are credit, foreign liabilities, asset prices and foreign currency reserves.

Scenario bias under IFRS 9 standards

IFRS 9, which changes the estimation of Loan Loss Provisions from an Incurred Loss model to an Expected Credit Loss model, entered into application in 2018. It changed the focus to a forward-looking perspective, which requires banks to do macroeconomic forecasts. However, banks have incentives to bias those forecasts in order to undertake earnings or capital management. For this thesis, I collect the forecasts of the 184 European listed banks from their annual reports and I conclude that they do capital management but not earnings management. The sample is small, but results hold after robustness checks and the residuals satisfy OLS assumptions.

In line with the growing governmental efforts to reduce the gender income gap, in 2016 a retirement pension supplement for mothers of two or more children was introduced in Spain. Through an Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition analysis, we find that the policy had a smaller-than-expected shrinking effect in the gender gap in retirement pensions.
Using a difference-in-differences approach, we identified that the trade-off between the supplement incentivizing early retirement and the penalty this retirement modality entails in Spain as the mechanisms driving this result. Finally, we developed a dynamic choice model to simulate women’s behavior under alternative versions of the policy.

2008-2009 Global Financial Crisis led to European debt crisis leaving the periphery of euro zone with very high borrowing costs compared to core countries. When Covid-19 Pandemic Crisis hit the economies, unconventional monetary policy tools of European Central Bank prevented a similar debt crisis. We identify the underlying factor of the ECB monetary policy that is active during the 2011-2012 debt crisis and Covid-19 Pandemic periods which operated through sovereign spreads preventing the contagion of fragmentation risk of euro area. We call this new factor, save-the-euro, and using it we shed light on the monetary policies of this unusual periods and formally measure their effects on asset prices.

We construct a theoretical Overlapping Generations (OLG) model to describe how sovereign debt crises can propagate in the economy under certain financial constraints. When prices of bonds fall due to perceived sovereign debt risks, banks can invest less on capital goods, directly affecting the business cycle. We find that a sovereign debt crisis affects young and old generations differently, with the latter facing higher fluctuations in consumption. We also find that the macroprudential policy can be effective only at very high levels on the old, but ineffective for the younger generation.

When deciding for themselves whether to keep or delegate a decision-making right, individuals often fail to delegate even when doing so would yield a higher expected return. However, beyond the individual decision-making context, such decisions are frequently made by parties on behalf of themselves and others. Using an innovative experimental design we identify the effects of responsibility on delegation decisions. We find that being responsible for others leads to increased delegation in the face of both losses and gains. We further investigate the channels through which the responsibility effect operates and find fear of guilt/regret to be a more powerful motivator than the desire for power. Fear of social punishment is more powerful than both of these, however.

This literature review focuses on the contribution of the heterogeneous agents framework to the empirical robustness of macroeconomic models. First, we focus on the transmission of monetary policy in an economy characterized by heterogeneous agents. We do this by analysing both the quantitative HANK model and an analytical representation (THANK).
Secondly, we illustrate the greater suitability of heterogeneous agent models for economic and welfare analysis in a developing country context. Finally, we analyze agent-based models as a potential avenue to address a higher degree of heterogeneity and complexity in the data.

Our study uses an arguably exogenous supply chain shock generated by the March 2021 blockage of the Suez Canal to analyze contributions to import price inflation and transport method substitution. Using a quasi-experimental Event Study methodology to analyze European trade data, we identify upward pressure in import prices as well as an import quantity contraction. This suggests that supply chain disruptions may be a legitimate channel for inflation. We do not, however, identify any substitution effect; air travel does not appear to have been utilized more frequently as a result of the blockage.

In this literature review, we focus on workplace discrimination with particular attention paid to the hiring process. We classified the hiring process into two stages: CV-screening and interview. Following the theoretical discussion of stereotypes supporting the existence of discrimination, two empirical pieces of research are introduced: the first paper shows that race affects applicants’ callback rate during the screening process, while the second study shows that the probability of a female musician being hired increases with the introduction of blind auditions. Lastly, from a sociological aspect, we claim that cultural similarities can affect employers’ hiring decisions, from which workplace discrimination might also appear.

The following paper examines the downgrading in job status that immigrant workers suffer when settling in a new country. We consider the massive Venezuelan exodus and the impacts this shock had on the job outcomes of migrants who settled in Chile. Our approach is based on linear regression analysis and multinomial logistic regression models to estimate the penalty immigrants face. To this end, we use household-level data and employ two job-status indexes. Results show that migrants who arrived before the 2015 Venezuelan crisis did not face significant downgrading. However, migrants who have arrived after 2015 do. Findings are relevant to understanding the impact of massive and sudden migratory shocks.

The purpose of this project is to calibrate the Hull-White model using data on at-the-money payer swaptions and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for 100 different combinations of expiries (T0) and tenors (Tn – T0). The calibration of the model parameters a and σ is done in the following way: (i) first, we use market swap interest rates to generate 10,000 combinations of (T0, Tn, a, σ); (ii) then, we calculate swaption prices for each of these combinations using a closed-form function derived from the Hull-White (one factor) model in the form of F: (T0, Tn, a, σ) → Price; (iii) we use ANN to learn the inverse mapping
relationship (F−1 : (T0, Tn, Price) → (a, σ)); (iv) we use swaptions market prices as arguments for F−1 to find calibrated a and σ for each expiry and tenor. Finally, we use the calibrated parameters to calculate the theoretical Hull-White prices and compare these prices with the prices observed in the market. The results show that the prices generated are very close to the ones observed in the market, suggesting that the ANN is an effective method for calibrating the model parameters accurately.

This paper studies the impact of investing preference frictions between ESG and traditional investors on stock price volatility. As these shareholder groups embody heterogeneous preferences, the resulting between-group differences cause multiplicity of price equilibria. While echoing literature that rising ESG shareholding reduces volatility, we also find that ESG-ownership dominance drives volatility more than traditional investor dominance. This suggests that within-group heterogenous definitions of ESG manifest upon achieving dominance and this subsequent fraying of the consensus results in higher volatility. We advocate further study into this apparent disconnect between ESG investor behaviour and the risk-reduction propensities of ESG for businesses.

We study sign asymmetry in the effect of conventional monetary policy on key nominal and real macroeconomic variables in the euro area, using monthly data ranging from 2002 until 2022. We make use of local projections with state-dependence coming from the sign of the monetary policy shock, employing shocks identified using high frequency identification. Our baseline findings suggest that, while nominal macroeconomic variables are more sensitive to an expansionary monetary shock, contractionary monetary policy shocks have an immediate and stronger effect on real variables. Furthermore, we investigate the potential sources of asymmetry by clustering countries that present similarities in proxies of labor, financial and housing markets, respectively. We find results that are consistent with theoretical predictions that downward nominal wage rigidities, sectoral composition of the economy, firm sizes as well as the housing market and housing debt conditions all contribute to the sign asymmetries we uncover in our baseline results.

We are the first to construct a general model for forecasting redenomination risk by using the difference in a country’s EUR-denominated CDS spreads compared to Germany. The goal of this work is to further close this gap by harnessing the power of machine learning algorithms, with a particular focus on techniques such as Random Forests, XGBoosting, and Lasso regressions. The results have important implications for policymakers, financial institutions and investors. Relying mainly on daily financial market data, we find that machine learning models significantly improve forecasting accuracy in both a structural crisis and a period of economic recovery. We conclude that XGB and Lasso are the best performing forecasting models, as for the latter modeling approach we get correlations between predicted and actual values as high as 0.6 for some countries. Finally, when we look at the measures of variable importance in our machine learning models, we indeed find that Lasso selects different types of predictors with much larger macroeconomic reference as relevant, which seems to explain the difference in prediction accuracy.

Using a fuzzy regression discontinuity design we estimate the effect of a country-wide free tuition policy on university enrollment and attrition in Chile. Exploiting an administrative dataset of the 2019 cohort of applicants we find significant impacts on both enrollment and attrition. The results are robust even after controlling for potential confounders and fixed effects. We find evidence of significantly larger effects among typically disadvantaged applicants such as rural an aboriginal. Results support the argument that free-tuition policy in higher education reduces socioeconomic gaps in access and attrition and such effects are larger for marginalized groups.

The banking sector plays a crucial role in the economy. Therefore, being able to anticipate banks’ financial distress is key to the overall economic stability. In this study, using a dataset for European and United Kingdom banks for the period 2006-2021, we develop an early warning system for banks’ financial distress. To this aim, first, we employ several machine learning techniques and compare their performance in order to assess whether bank’s financial distress episodes are predictable and individuate the model that best serves this aim. Second, we complement the machine learning methods with the Shapley Values approach in order to identify the key drivers of a bank’s financial distress. Indeed, identifying the factors that signal a bank’s vulnerability to financial distress could ultimately serve as a guide for regulators and banks’ management in their preventive and corrective actions.

Estimating causal effects in the absence of treatment observability

In this paper, I propose a novel method to estimate causal effects when the treatments are not observable. Treatment observability is not affordable in many instances of noncompliance settings, where the treatments actually taken by the subjects may be different from the treatments they were assigned to. The standard procedure is to adhere to the intention-to-treat (ITT) principle and simply settle at estimating causal effects on the level of assigned treatments. In contrast, I propose a statistical algorithm that recovers the actual treatments from the outcome and pretreatment variables by iterative applications of regression and clustering algorithm, and use it to estimate causal effects on the level of actual treatments.

This thesis explores the intersection of mental health and economics through a review of the literature on five key subtopics: economic fluctuations, inequality, lockdowns, narratives and social media. The empirical evidence confirms that mental health is procyclical and is negatively affected by inequality. The COVID-19 pandemic, associated lockdown measures and narratives, together with the rise of social media, have posed diverse challenges for mental health. By synthesizing these findings, we provide valuable insights into the dynamics between mental health and economics, informing strategies to promote well- being in diverse contexts.
