El objetivo del trabajo es determinar si el uso de un grupo de verbos es propio del español de Argentina o si, por el contrario, se extiende a otros países hispanohablantes. Para ello, se analizan el proceso de derivación verbal, la semántica y el carácter neológico de las voces.
When a language comprises more than one country, or even more than one continent, a translator should be ready to acknowledge all the differences between its varieties. This paper focuses on some of the verbal uses typical for Argentinean Spanish. In particular, its purpose is to determine whether these verbs are only limited to Argentina or if, they are used in other Spanish-speaking countries. After obtaining a number of verbal voices from web pages and native informants, a group of these verbs—selected according to various morphological and lexicographic criteria—were documented in dictionaries and linguistic corpora. This information was then introduced on verbal cards made ad hoc, and, by comparing them, each verb was analyzed in terms of verbal derivation, semantics, and neology. Findings show that most of the meanings documented are not used in Spain, and that some of the verbs may not even be confined to Argentinean Spanish. Moreover, usage contexts lead to think that the verbs are mainly used in colloquial situations, both oral and written. Regarding neology, it is argued that some of the verbs could have been recently created in Spanish, whereas some others, instead, are likely to belong to the Argentinean lunfardo vocabulary. In order to properly ascertain if they are new verbal voices, future research is needed. Finally, since many of the derivational word stems from which verbs are created are also verbs, it is suggested that future studies describing the main derivational morphology features of deverbal verbs are required.

Análisis de las incoherencias entre texto e imagen en Los Simpson

En los productos audiovisuales, el canal oral y el visual transmiten información simultáneamente. Si la coherencia de sentido entre texto e imagen desaparece en el doblaje, el objetivo de verosimilitud no se satisface. En este trabajo analizo y clasifico las incoherencias texto-imagen y aporto posibles soluciones a este recurrente problema.
When dubbing audio-visual products, translators must take into account the interactionbetween the oral and the visual channels, as both of them convey information at thesame time. It is sometimes difficult to maintain the original coherence between text andimage (due to wordplay, for instance), and the dubbed version ends up making no sense. This has negative consequences on the audience because they realise they are watchinga translation and that it could actually be wrong. Hence, the purpose of this paper is tofind out what causes the appearance of such incoherences and give some generalsolutions or strategies to prevent them. To do so, I have analysed specific examples oftext-image incoherences in the Spanish version of The Simpsons, as this animationseries often transmits information and humour through the visual channel. The results ofmy work are a classification of the different types of text-image incoherences (basedupon the several restrictions imposed by the image) and a reflection on the importanceof avoiding them to improve the quality of dubbed versions. In some cases I proposeadaptations of the text to solve incoherences, but in other examples visual restrictionsmake such adaptations almost impossible, which leads me to the conclusion that digitalmanipulation of the image is sometimes necessary. Future studies could broaden thescope of my work by analysing more examples of text-image incoherences in otherseries and films: this could help improve my classification of them and give furthersolutions to this recurrent problem.

El presente trabajo consiste en la traducción y el análisis de un informe sobre la falta de mano de obra cualificada en Alemania publicado en 2012 por el Bundestag. A partir del texto traducido se analizan varios problemas léxicos y gramaticales de la traducción entre el alemán y el español.
This paper presents a translation and analysis of a report about the lack of qualifiedpersonnel in Germany published in March 2012 by the German Bundestag. The problem of the lack of qualified personnel has been very much discussed inGermany during the last years. Due to the current difficult situation of the labour marketin Spain, many Spanish people think about the possibility to emigrate to Germany andare therefore interested in this subject. The objective of this paper is a double one: to offer an exhaustive, detailed andcomprehensible text in Spanish about the lack of qualified personnel and the labourmarket situation in Germany as well as to analyse various translation problems betweenGerman and Spanish. The analysis part of the paper contains a terminological glossary with all specificvocabulary regarding the labour market, demography and politics, as well as definitionsof culture specific concepts. Furthermore, it includes an analysis of two of the mostdifficult grammatical problems appearing in translation between German and Spanish:the formation of compound nouns and adjectives and the versatile modal verb sollen. Both analysis are based on studies of comparative grammar of German and Spanish andcarried out with examples of the translated text, and may serve as a useful model forfurther translations of the same genre.

El doblatge d’una comèdia britànica: The Vicar of Dibley

Bartoll, Eduard
Aquest treball analitza els problemes de doblatge de l’anglès al català que presenta una sèrie còmica, The Vicar of Dibley. L’objectiu es estudiar tant problemes generals com específics per tal de demostrar la viabilitat del doblatge d’aquesta comèdia. Es proposen possibles solucions per a tots els problemes analitzats.
In Spain and also in Catalonia, both movies and TV series are usually dubbed. Britishcomedies have had a considerable success once dubbed into Catalan over the years, so itwould make sense to dub a successful comedy series such as The vicar of Dibley. The ideawas to prove it possible to dub, by working on the first episode of the first season, so as toprovide translation examples and show that the Catalan audience would appreciate thisparticular comedy. In order to properly analyse the whole episode, the first step was toestablish some basic but essential information about audio-visual translation and moreprecisely about dubbing. This initial information offered the basis for the study, which wasdivided in two parts: a general analysis of the issues concerning the whole episode and thetranslation of specific problems divided into categories such as nicknames, expressions, jokes and so on. It has been shown that the most appropriate method of translation in acomedy is to adapt all the references to provide natural dialogs for the target audience.Keeping in mind that the aim is to entertain, it has proved basic to respect as much aspossible the image and to maintain all the comic elements. Basically, this study shows howit is possible to dub the series, while providing practical translation examples for futurereference. Furthermore, it plays an educational role by widely explaining the whole dubbingprocess.

OKKASIONALISMEN: Eine Analyse anhand ausgewählter Beispiele aus einer Wochenzeitung
Horst, Christina
Gramàtica comparada i general -- Paraules compostes

Language is such a positive tool for a human being and is so intrinsically linked to the /nevolution and thought process that it is quite surprising that society has not interested /nitself more in the quest to find the perfect language. Artificial languages pursue two main objectives: the creation of a common language that makes use of all its resources to become more precise and less ambiguous. However none of these languages has managed to embed itself successfully through the course of history, and in addition /nnone appear to take into account both objectives. In this assignment not only will a /nrevision be made of the actual situation with regards to Artificial Languages and an /nevaluation of the most recent and important pieces of research but, in addition, we present the Rodinian language, an artificial language that presents itself as a prototype of the perfect language. To demonstrate that it can be a solution to the problem /npreviously referred to, we will base ourselves on the five criteria that should be the base /nof the perfect language. The results of this assignment, which are also based on polls done in three different Countries, have hinted that Rodinian could comply with at least four of the five criteria submitted and that, in addition, there is a considerable interest in discovering an artificial language that meets the criteria described above. This work is of a general nature and limited, and it would be interesting that future studies built on the search of the perfect language and more in depth analysis of each point of the presented criteria.

Intertextualitat
En este trabajo se analiza la variación discursiva y los diferentes criterios de estilo entre textos jurídicos normativos en inglés y español; se establecen fenómenos lingüísticos propios del discurso jurídico que generan problemas de traducción; y se comparan algunas diferencias entre sistemas jurídicos y políticos para analizar su repercusión en la traducción.
The translation of documents regulating international adoption processes is essential to boost legal adoption processes and reduce the number of illegal adoptions in order for the prospective adoptive parents to have a full understanding of the steps they have to follow. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the differences between legal English and legal Spanish discourse, as well as to cknowledge the style of regulating /ndocuments of both languages and establishing certain characteristics of this discourse /nwhich can lead to translation problems. This paper also comprises some of the EnglishSpanish differences between legal and political systems and which effect do they have /non translation. In order to accomplish this task, the body of this paper consists of a basic /ntranslation analysis which includes a classification of linguistic matters (lexical and /nmorphological) and cultural matters. The results of this study show that, broadly speaking, linguistic problems tend to be resolved using a dictionary or following a legal style manual while the solution for a cultural problem depends on the assignment. To conclude, it is argued that when translating specialised documents it is crucial to acquire /nspecialised knowledge on the subject and to be aware of the communicative situation.

El presente trabajo consiste en la traducción comentada de un artículo científico. Nuestros objetivos son reflexionar sobre las características y problemas de la traducción especializada, analizar las estrategias y las soluciones propuestas, y producir un texto meta ‘adecuado’ teniendo en cuenta la tipología textual y el ámbito al que pertenece.
The discipline of Genetics plays a crucial role in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of/nmany diseases and disorders. The continuous scientific research, especially in this field, /nmakes scientific subjects a frequent and popular source of translation. In this paper we /nanalyze some specialized translation characteristics which become translation problems /nsuch as language structure, terminology, and lexical elements. We present these problems /nby sections together with the translation strategies, the justifications, and the solutions /nbased on the context, field, and target language style in order to better reflect the necessity /nof linking language skills and scientific knowledge together to produce an accurate and /nunivocal text. However, this work focuses on the translation into Spanish of English /ncomplex noun phrases which constitute one of the most troublesome problems to solve /nwithin the specialized translation, given the difficulty to analyze the order and connection among noun pre-modifiers. The findings of their translation show obvious signs of the difference not only between languages but also in the way they both describe phenomena /nand concepts. After a deep reflection on the topics we present in this work, we have been /nable to provide a professional translation that can be a useful tool to consult and clarify /nlinguistic doubts and to increase the knowledge of genetics and others related disciplines.

Els manlleus en la revista “Time Out Barcelona”

Manlleus (Lingüística)
Corpus (Lingüística)
El present treball constitueix un estudi i una anàlisi sobre les dades obtingudes del buidatge dels manlleus recollits en dos números de la revista catalana Time Out Barcelona. L’objectiu és aprofundir en el tema dels préstecs i extreure algunes conclusions sobre els tipus d’unitats manllevades i el seu tractament.
The processes of words formation are a question that interests terminologists and translators, but also any language professional, because the lexicon is constantly incorporating new units and adapting itself to the reality so as to respond to recent needs. /nThis paper is an analysis of the data manually extracted from the loan words retrieval of /nthe 207 and 208 numbers of the Catalan magazine Time Out Barcelona, a weekly /nleisure time and cultural supplement of the ARA newspaper. The purpose of the study is /ngoing into the loan words topic in depth, as well as drawing some conclusions about the /ntype of borrowed forms and their treatment. The criterion used to establish if a word is a /nneologism is the lexicographic criterion and the exclusion corpus is composed of the Diccionari de la llengua catalana and the Gran diccionari de la llengua catalana. /nAltogether 94 borrowed forms have been extracted and then sorted in tables from different points of view. It is observed that the great majority of these units are nouns, /nthat they usually come from English and have not been adapted to the Catalan linguistic /nsystem, that they generally respond to stylistic and expressive reasons, that some words are also neological terms in their origin language, that most of them belong to the subject field of music or gastronomy, and finally that the tendency is to write them in italics. We argue that journalists need to think about what language model they want to disseminate and that they should try to achieve a lexical balance between loan words and alternative Catalan proposals.

La traducció del castellà al català en l'àmbit oral col·loquial: una aproximació pràctica

Castellà -- Traducció al català
Comunicació oral
Treball en què que s'analitza la traducció del castellà al català en l'àmbit oral col·loquial a partir d'un exemple real pràctic (una pel·lícula) per tal de determinar els problemes més comuns d'aquest tipus de traducció i de quina manera s’hi ha d’enfrontar el traductor per aconseguir un producte final satisfactori.
The translation from Spanish into Catalan is a field which has not been deeply studied yet./nHowever, the relations between both languages and their own features form a linguistic/nframework with specific characteristics and difficulties which is worth studying. The/ncomplexity of translating between these two languages increases within the oral colloquial/nregister, in which the differences between the official linguistic rules and the actual use of/nCatalan become more evident. By analyzing part of the translation into Catalan of a/nSpanish colloquial film, in this work I try to determine, on the one hand, which are the/nmost common problems translators have to deal with when translating a colloquial Spanish/ntext into Catalan and, on the other hand, what should especially be taken into account/nduring the process. The analysis is divided into two main sections: the first one is focused/non the features by which a dialect or an idiolect can be recognized, whereas the second one/nincludes three subsections in which different levels of language are analyzed (phonetics,/nmorphosyntax and vocabulary). All sections are illustrated by examples taken directly from/nthe film, and further evaluated according to both theoretical and practical approaches. The/nresults obtained show that it is possible to define the main factors which influence the/ntranslating process so that translators can improve their final product, and give evidence of/nthe complexity of translating from Spanish into Catalan, which must always be borne in/nmind.

El discurs polític: la immigració com a pretext
Cebrián Rodríguez, Marta
Polítics -- Llenguatge
Anàlisi del discurs
El treball és una d’anàlisi del discurs polític que apareix en els programes electorals dels candidats a les presidencials franceses 2012, centrant l’atenció en el terme immigration. L’objectiu és identificar de quina manera expressen la seva ideologia, concretar les semblances, les divergències i els matisos que determinen en els seus discursos.
A presidential election campaign offers a very interesting opportunity to analyze the /n/npolitical discourse that each candidate defends. Coinciding with the French presidential /n/nelection 2012 we have carried out a study that will show the real message that /n/npoliticians express when we go beyond the surface of their discourses. Our TFG work /n/ncenters the attention on the election programs from the fourth best positioned candidates /n/nat the moment of the first round presidential election last 22nd April, Jean-Luc /n/nMélenchon, François Hollande, Nicolas Sarkozy and Marine Le Pen. Therefore our /n/ncorpus is based on the part their programs devote to immigration. Taking into account /n/nthat each candidate has chosen a different format to show the program: a letter, a single /n/nparagraph or a group of them, an essay; the analyze has been adapted to every one. For /n/nparagraphs we have focused the attention on smaller units and for the letter and essay on /n/nlonger ones. As a result, we have identified different intended uses of text structures; /n/npronouns; verb forms; terminology; subject appearance or disappearance; rhetorical /n/nfigures etc. that provide candidates with the chance to pronounce their real ideology /n/nabout immigration. Finally, we get to the conclusion that for most of the candidates, /n/nimmigration seems not to be a problem but an excuse to declare or not their ideology, to /n/npoint an opponent as the real trouble or to show off as the unique leader to face Europe. /n/nThis model of work could be considered in other domains.

It is a fact that some germanic languages, like German, count „particles‟ among their /n/nword type list. This group includes a wide variety of terms with different functions and /n/ncharacteristics. Since particles just acquire meaning with regard to a linguistic and /n/ncultural context, it is not always a simple task to distinguish one type from the other /n/nand, still harder, to define them separately, particularly if it has to do with modal /n/nparticles, the most problematic group of all and the focus of this work. Moreover, /n/nparticles normally appear in colloquial registers, which means that their use is generally /n/nspontaneous and cannot always be generalised, and also in texts such as scripts that /n/nintend to reproduce spoken language. /n/nOn the one hand, the aim of this paper is to provide a compilation of information, /n/nobtained from different specialists that have been analysing and researching it over the /n/nlast decades. This should give the reader a clear idea of the general term „particle‟ and /n/nalso enough knowledge to be able to distinguish the particles which affect the modality /n/nof the whole sentence („modal particles‟) from the other types, such as the ones which /n/nmodifies degree or intensifies an element of the sentence. On the other hand, this work /n/nincludes an analysis of the meaning of some modal particles and their use in the script /n/nof two german films (Die Welle and Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei). The results of this /n/nanalysis are obtained from a document provided to thirty-seven German native /n/nspeakers from different parts of Germany./n/nThe conclusions do not aim not to be categorical, but to provide a close approach to /n/nthe subject, specially because the research has proven that „particles‟ require a more /n/nexhaustive investigation to be understood.

Análisis del doblaje de Alicia en el País de las Maravillas
Salvador Aranda, Carolina
Audiovisuals -- Traducció
Doblatge
Resum: En estas páginas se recogen y analizan los fragmentos más interesantes del /n/ndoblaje al castellano de Alicia en el País de las Maravillas desde una perspectiva teórica /n/ny descriptiva. Se descubren así la domesticación y adaptación como principales técnicas /n/nde traducción y la ausencia de un único método de traducción.
Despite its popularity and impact in dubbing style and techniques, Disney’s animated /n/nadaptation Alice in Wonderland is an almost ignored film in Translation Studies and /n/nDidactics. In Spain, dubbing is also the main modality of Audiovisual Translation and it /n/nrequires special skills from the translator, since two channels (acoustic and visual) carry /n/nthe semantic information. The purpose of this paper is to describe these special skills /n/nand specifically to find out the main techniques that translators of 1951 Alice in /n/nWonderland employed to solve translation problems related to the genre, audience and /n/nlanguage of the film and target culture. A more general objective is to determine /n/nwhether a specific and regular method of translation was carried out. In order to cover /n/nthese points, two procedures are taken: a theoretical one, which provides the basis of /n/ndubbing, and an analytical and descriptive one. The body of the paper presents a /n/ndescriptive analysis of the most conflictive fragments from the dubbed version in /n/ncomparison with the original one. Cultural factors, wordplays, intertitles, songs and /n/nneutral Spanish are the five translation problems analyzed. Results show that, due to the /n/nage of the target audience, adaptation, domestication and explication were the main /n/ntechniques employed by the translators. Even though there is not a regular translation /n/nmethod or technique neither in this film nor in the Disney Classics, the main objective is /n/nto produce a similar effect in the target audience. That is why fidelity to the original text /n/nis usually sacrificed. Further implications of this paper have to do with the canonization /n/nof this dubbing, which, despite technological and economic restrictions, had and still /n/nhas recognition in the whole Spanish-speaking area.

Coloquialismo y humor en South Park: análisis del doblaje al español
Martín Martín, Álvaro
Audiovisuals -- Traducció
Doblatge
Este trabajo es un estudio sobre la traducción del coloquialismo y el humor en productos audiovisuales. Tomando como referencia el doblaje al español de South Park, se analizan algunos errores habituales en obras similares y se plantean estrategias de traducción efectivas, tanto a nivel textual como oracional.
Humour and colloquial language are overwhelmingly present in audiovisual products, /n/nbut they are seldom translated properly. Most translators deal with these aspects of /n/nlanguage through conventional approaches (literalness, neutralization), which renders /n/ntheir translations flat or incomprehensible. This paper aims to show the most common /n/ndifficulties involved in the translation of humour and colloquial language, and how /n/nthese can be effectively solved. Through the analysis of an episode from the American /n/nsitcom South Park dubbed in Spanish, I provide strategies and recommendations for the /n/ndubbing of comedy series and films, some of which can also be applied to other areas of /n/ntranslation. Furthermore, I identify some serious shortcomings of the Spanish dubbing /n/nof South Park and explain what effect they have on the final product. The methodology /n/nconsisted in visualizing the original version, so as to get an impression of the colloquial /n/nand humorous aspects of the episode, and then observing the dubbed version to assess /n/nits effectiveness in both respects. Once I detected the most relevant issues, I classified /n/nthem according to their typology, analyzed them in detail and suggested alternatives /n/nwhen deemed necessary. Although this paper is didactic in nature, it serves to draw /n/nconclusions about the dubbing of comedy series and films: translators need to consider /n/nmore innovative approaches to colloquialism and humour, and the interpretation of /n/ncharacters needs to be much more accurate.

Rearranging Phrasal Verbs
López Martínez, Dúnia
Anglès -- Sintagma verbal
Anglès -- Diccionaris
This paper starts from the fact that everyone who has studied English as a second language/nhas noticed that the study of phrasal verbs poses a challenge for both teachers and/nstudents. Students are offered a list of phrasal verbs without any other explanation; they/njust have to learn them by heart. Those lists differ from one another due to the fact that/neach author/teacher chooses the phrasal verbs that they consider the most common. Since/nthis approach to phrasal verbs is not the most effective, it is going to be the center of this/nstudy. After describing what a phrasal verb is –a compound verb formed by a main verb/nand a particle–, although the particle placement will also be treated, the work will be/nfocused on analyzing the particle in terms of meaning. Moreover, a comparison among its/ntreatment in different dictionaries will be carried out, and, since the particle is the key/ncomponent, we aim to reorganize the lists provided to students according to the particle in/norder to make its study easier.

Análisis de los verbos prefijados con re- y su aplicación a la lexicografía
Casamor Vidal, Maria
Lexicografia -- Diccionaris
Castellà -- Morfologia
En este trabajo se estudia la relación entre la morfología y la lexicografía mediante el análisis de seis verbos prefijados con re-. Se comparan sus definiciones en tres diccionarios y se proponen nuevas definiciones siguiendo el modelo de entrada lexicográfica del Diccionario de Aprendizaje de Español como Lengua Extranjera.
Dictionaries are an essential tool in the process of learning a foreign language and they /nmust meet the needs of its users. However, it happens too often that they do not include /nactualized and current information. The aim of this paper is to observe the relation /nbetween morphology and lexicography by analyzing a group of verbs prefixed by re- /nand its subsequent application to the Spanish learner‟s dictionary DAELE (Diccionario /nde Aprendizaje de Español como Lengua Extranjera). Four procedures are followed to /nachieve it: the summary of the syntactic, morphologic, and semantic information of re- /nprefix that appears in Spanish grammars; the analysis by different corpora of six verbs, /nchosen from the index of entries of this dictionary; the comparison of the existing /ndefinitions in three monolingual Spanish dictionaries and the proposal of a /nlexicographical entry for each analyzed verb. Using corpora enables the observation of /nthe gaps between existing definitions in the dictionaries and the real and current use of /nthe verb. Re- prefix has multiple meanings and affects the lexical base in a lot of /ndifferent ways; however, these nuances are not always showed on dictionaries‟ /ndefinitions.

One aspect of translation that has scarcely been studied is the culinary terminology and /nthe difficulties that emerge when trying to transfer intrinsic cultural items from one /nlanguage into others. Despite some gastronomic dictionaries offer translation options, /nthere is not a considerable amount of data that provides helpful information on how to /ntransfer the information, to solve the problems and to choose the ‘best solutions’. In this /nproject, I expose the eleven most relevant aspects that I consider necessary to take into /nconsideration when translating. Through an analysis of the cartes and menus from a /nselection of the best Spanish restaurants—holding at least one Michelin star—, I /ndetected and extracted the translation errors, the diversity of strategies and techniques to /nsolve the cultural problems, and the variety of solutions adopted. In addition, I /ncompared the different strategies among the restaurants and I evaluated these strategies /nthus verifying whether they accomplished their objective of proximity to the target /nclient. This project does not present final results that show definitive solutions either a /nsingle way of transferring cultural information when translating, but it rather presents /nsome terminology aspects—like the international importance of French in the /ngastronomic field—and exposes other translating possibilities. For instance, when /ndealing with the choice between the exoticism that provides a borrowed term or the /n/nnaturalization. Finally, I must say that this work is open to further research, given that I /njust selected some of the aspects I considered were more repetitive and thus in my /n/nopinion were more relevant.

La traducción del manga al español: Cuestiones lingüísticas, metodológicas y técnicas.
Ruíz Pi, Sílvia
Japonès--Traducció
Còmics -- Japó
El trabajo trata la traducción del manga al castellano (cuestiones lingüísticas, metodológicas y técnicas): las características principales del japonés, el proceso de traducción, los métodos y las opciones de adaptación empleados por las editoriales españolas, y la compatibilidad de escritura en equipos españoles. Finalmente, incluye un ejemplo real de traducción.
Nowadays, publishing manga has become a very popular market in Spain that reaches a/nwide audience. Moreover, manga fanatics – also known as “otakus” – increasingly demand/nthe highest quality from the translations of their favourite series. Therefore, the need for/nspecialised translators in this sector has increased up to a great extent; yet, there is only one/ncollege in Barcelona in which students may choose Japanese as a second language. As for I/nlove translating and manga, I have decided to study the processes of its translation in order/nto forward the interest of studying it at Pompeu Fabra University – even though there is no/nJapanese department. As you might know, manga is the term used to refer to comics/noriginally drawn by Japanese artists; consequently, they are primarily written in Japanese,/nwhich is a particularly difficult language involving special expressions and nuances. That is/nwhy in this project I first introduce the language, and then present the translation of an/nexcerpt from a one-shot manga, discussing the difficulties, problems and characteristics I/nhave encountered during the process. Furthermore, I include a brief summary of the/nnecessary Windows and Mac OS systems settings to read and write Japanese with your/ncomputer, as well as of the various language-related programs and utilities (e. g., Optical/ncharacter recognition). To sum up, using the translation of a manga as an example, this/nproject shows significant differences between Japanese and Spanish culture and the use of/nlanguage in comics, and how these differences influence localization processes.

Terminologia científica
El trabajo se divide en tres partes: una traducción del ámbito médico inglés-español; un glosario de términos extraídos del texto con su equivalente en español, y un análisis de los principales problemas de traducción detectado y que son frecuentes en los textos biomédicos, con sus respectivas soluciones.
The information has been divided in three main parts: translation, specialized glossary,/nand translation problems. In order to elaborate the two last parts, examples from the/noriginal text, whose translation poses problems or difficulties, have been extracted. The/nsolution to these problems has been found through the consultation of specialized/nglossaries or dictionaries, and parallel texts. It is important to note that, in order to/nchoose a terminological equivalent in Spanish, more than once it has been necessary to/ngive preference to frequency of use instead of the traditionally correct and pure term:/nscience moves on fast, and consequently, so does scientific language. The biomedical/ntranslator must be permanently updated, so that his/her language is not obsolete.

Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit der Präsenz deutscher Dialekte im Internet, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf dem österreichischen Dialekt Steirisch liegt. Es wird untersucht, in welchem Maße dieser Dialekt im Rahmen der Kommunikation via Internet verwendet wird
The new media technology has completely changed the way people/ninteract with each other and these new methods of communication have/nalso influenced the use of languages and therefore the need of analysing/nits influence. This paper presents an example of these changes: the use/nof a written version of a dialect –which according to the main definitions/nof this word is an oral expression of a language– on the computer/nmediated communication. The chosen regional variety of a language is/nthe Austrian dialect of Styria. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the/nwritten use of the Styrian dialect among people born in this state in their/ndaily computer mediated communication through emails and social/nmedia, for instance Facebook, in contrast with standard German. In/norder to carry out this analysis a survey by Internet was conducted, in/nwhich survey respondents were asked about their speaking and writing/nhabits, for example when they speak in the university with professors or/nwhen they write messages to friends. The results show that the dialect/nform is often used. Speakers, who admitted to write in dialect, switch/nbetween standard and dialect depending on the recipient of their/nmessage. These conclusions point out that the new media, especially the/nsocial media, has motivated a written version of the dialect of Styria

Verlan is a language game that has existed in France for a long time, but in the last 30 years has become widely-used, especially by the youth from banlieues. The main particularity of this slang is that reverse a standard French word in order to produce a new one that will act both as an encryption method and as an identity marker./nSo, as we will see in this research, this type of cryptic wordplay inverting the syllables of the words plays an important role in the French society life. It is mostly been through songs and films containing verlan, that learners have been introduced to the cultural concept of the French suburbs and their ethnical diverse residents./nFurthermore, as verlan is becoming more and more widespread, its original speakers try to create more exceptions not only to maintain this slang as an identity marker but also as a method for linguistic concealment./nNowadays, verlan is progressively coming to the common language, and most linguistics are wondering if this fact will really affect directly to the standard language, as we have already seen the introduction of some verlan vocabulary in the French dictionaries./nThe following research will explain how, when and why it is used this particular slang

Anàlisi comparativa i crítica de les versions catalana i espanyola de Campos de fresas
Ruiz Herrero, Carmen
Castellà -- Anàlisi del discurs
Català -- Anàlisi del discurs
Gramàtica comparada i general
Aquest treball és una anàlisi comparativa i crítica de les versions catalana i espanyola de la novel·la juvenil Campos de fresas, l'autor de la qual és Jordi Sierra i Fabra, un dels escriptors més llegits i editats de l'Estat espanyol
The Spanish and Catalan versions of Jordi Sierra i Fabra’s novel Campos de fresas have attracted numerous readers making the novel one of the bestsellers, especially among young readers in Spain and Latin America. Moreover, numerous secondary schools have also included it in their reading lists. The aim of the current paper is to investigate the sources of this literary success - is the storyline itself the factor responsible for attracting the readership or, rather, Sierra i Fabra’s writing style? The analysis will be done through a comparative and critical analysis of the two versions of Campos de fresas, Spanish and Catalan. Special emphasis is also put on the quality of the Catalan version of the novel, translated from Spanish by the author himself. The results of the examination of the most relevant linguistic phenomena of both versions of Campos de fresas are quite positive as the novel is characterised by high linguistic and literary quality. The Catalan translation, likewise, is in general successful in spite of some errors and sporadic mistranslations. However, due to the narrative excellence of the novel, its young readers can easily interiorise the lexical richness and syntactic constructions it offers. The plot of Campos de fresas invites them to reflect on the real situations and stories familiar from their own social context in which they live and develop.

La toma de notas en interpretación consecutiva:/nhacia la elaboración de un sistema propio

Traducció i interpretació
Traducció simultània i consecutiva
Anotacions
Este trabajo presenta el proceso de aprendizaje y evolución del sistema de toma de notas adquirido en el Grado de Traducción e Interpretación. El objetivo consiste en mejorar la técnica adquirida mediante el análisis de varios ejercicios de toma de notas para así desarrollar un sistema consistente y eficiente.
A consistent system for taking notes in consecutive interpreting is essential for an interpreter and at the same time, one of the most difficult tasks to develop. Some professionals affirm that note-taking cannot be taught and that everyone must come up with their own system. Therefore many instructors allow their students to develop a system which will not present effective solutions to the problems they may find. Consequently, most students of interpreting fail to acquire an effective system of note-taking. The aim of this essay is to improve the note-taking techniques acquired throughout the degree in “Translation and Interpreting”. This essay presents several exercises whose goal is to achieve the aims previously described. To begin with, there is a general overview of the characteristics of consecutive interpreting and, more specifically, the note-taking technique. In the third section, four note-taking exercises, which were carried out in class in the third year of their degree, are analysed in order to detect the errors. In the fourth section, these exercises are corrected so as to practice. Moreover, two more consecutive interpretations are performed and analysed one last time. These results are taken to observe the mistakes presented in the note-taking system and create improvements. Now, after the elaboration of this essay, the system for note-taking is consistent and efficient.

Aprender verbos semánticamente similares: materiales didácticos electrónicos para estudiantes de ELE
Rodríguez Ortega, Jennifer
Aprenentatge -- Recursos electrònics en xarxa
Gramàtica comparada i general -- Verbs auxiliars
El trabajo consiste en un análisis y la evaluación de materiales electrónicos existentes sobre parejas de verbos con significados parecidos, además de la ampliación de estos materiales y la creación de un blog para poner-los a disposición de los estudiantes de ELE
Nowadays, due to the importance of learning languages and observing different cultures, there are 18 million students of the Spanish language. This statistic enables us to think about the usual difficulties students may encounter; specifically in distinguishing verbs with similar meanings. It also allows us to consider what resources they currently have in order to improve on these issues as well as determine whether these resources are useful or not. This topic allows us to formulate two main objectives: analyse didactic electronic materials for Spanish students about verbs with similar meanings and adapting them according to the necessary aspects for a word‘s knowledge. In order to conduct the material‘s analysis we used Nation‘s theory (2001), which affirms that there are three aspects of a word necessary to know it, these being a word‘s form, meaning and use, and then check if these aspects that he describes are included in the exercises. The results of our analysis show that none of the activities chosen cover those three essential aspects, and specifically that none of them include collocations or pronunciation exercises. Regarding our adaptation of exercises we used a web blog with audiovisual resources to incorporate these aspects not covered by the materials analysed

Este trabajo presenta una traducción inédita de fragmentos de Essentials of Breast Surgery y un análisis de esta jerga mediante un glosario y problemas de traducción.
The transmission of scientific knowledge and information about the new medical advances leads to one of the most important necessities of translation worldwide, because English is the lingua franca in this field. Since the biomedical translation becomes a social requirement and this kind of translation is poorly documented, it is necessary to study the translation of this specialized jargon. For this reason, the purpose of this research is to give an unpublished translation of two sections placed in a surgery manual called Essentials of Breast Surgery. It contains an analysis of the surgery jargon with a glossary and a selection of the most common translation problems of these texts. The analysis is made looking up medical glossaries and dictionaries, consulting parallel texts, and getting information in other biomedical translation researches, all of them liable. From this study focused on a professional view, we can confirm that the medical language and the surgery jargon can present, among others, terminological, cultural and register problems. Also this surgery jargon is very different from other medical jargons, because it is characterized by very specific terminology and very difficult syntax. To deal with this kind of text, the translator has to know the issue which about the text is and her or she has to be familiar with the speciality‟s jargon.

Friedrich Hölderlin en la obra de Luis Cernuda
Gasó Gómez, Nuria
Castellà -- Traducció a l'alemany
Plagi
Cernuda tradujo a Hölderlin sin saber alemán, sin ser traductor. La obra de Hölderlin apenas era conocida y casi no había sido editada en lengua española. ¿Cómo lo hizo? ¿Realmente influyó la obra del poeta alemán en su poesía, como él lo afirmaba? He aquí una aproximación a estas cuestiones
Luis Cernuda’s translations of English literary works from authors like Blake or Shakespeare have been studied extensibly. Nevertheless, the Spanish poet’s translations of German writer Friedrich Hölderlin’s poetic works have not been examined in depth in the world of Spanish literature nor in the field of philology. This is due to the scarce knowledge of German language among Spanish speaking cultures. That language barrier has meant Cernuda’s translations from German to Spanish have remained almost unnoticed for half a century. The way the translations were undertaken shed light on a particular episode in Luis Cernuda’s biography considering that he did not speak German, and that it was thanks to the almost unknown philosopher Hans Gebser that he was able to understand Hölderlin’s work. This paper reports on the impact and influence of this German lyrical poet had on Luis Cernuda—and in Spanish literature—after the recovery of Hölderlins’s forgotten works. It presents a comparison between some of the original poems and the versions Cernuda translated leaving a trace of his own style. The methodology he followed in order to accomplish those works and the traces of Hölderlin’s style in the Sevillian’s writings should be taken into account as one of the rarities found in the world of translation. And, at the same time, it should be noticed as an interesting case in the field of comparative literature

Rule-based machine translation (MT) tools are nowadays widely used in press translation from/nSpanish into Catalan due to the precise results that can be obtained between these two languages./nHowever, daily observation of the direct translations obtained through the AutomaticTrans MT/ntools at the press agency Europa Press shows that these tools need constant improvement and later/ncorrection and proofread in order to avoid common interferences at the final texts. The main/npurpose of this paper is to optimize AutomaticTrans MT results trough an exhaustive comparative/nanalysis of several linguistic phenomenon obtained from a corpus formed by original texts in/nSpanish that have been translated into Catalan by two different AutomaticTrans MT versions: the/noldest (ATS1) and the latest (ATS4). The comparison of these texts and their evaluation according/nto high language standards displays that, despite ATS4 introduces several progresses through more/ncomplex syntactic rules and improved equivalences and dictionaries, not all the problems found in/nthe ATS1 translations have been resolved. On the contrary, regarding some of the cases studied,/nATS4 worsens the results successfully translated by ATS1. The final contribution of this paper is to/nbe seen through its application in the form of syntactic rules and equivalences for the/nAutomaticTrans MT tools and meticulous search of specific problems in new corpuses

Análisis comparativo de tres/ntraducciones al castellano del/ncuento/nVom Fischer und seiner Frau
Mena González, Paula
Alemany -- Traducció al castellà
Contes-- Traduccions al castellà
El presente trabajo analiza hasta qué punto el paso del tiempo y la evolución de la lengua pueden afectar a las traducciones que derivan de un mismo original. Esta comparación se ha realizado a partir del cuento Vom Fischer und seiner Frau, recogido por los hermanos Grimm en su antología.
The world of short stories is vast and often complicated. One of the main intentions/nbehind this work is to create an introduction of some basic notions related to short/nstories. Nevertheless, we focus on a particular type of short story: folktales. Kinder- und/nHausmärchen by Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm is one of the greatest models of folktales./nFor this reason we have selected one of Grimm’s tales entitled Vom Fischer und seiner/nFrau (The fisherman and his wife) to make a comparative analysis of three Spanish/ntranslations and a study underlining how the passing of time and the evolution of/nlanguage affect in translations, which derive from the same original text. The/ntranslations used date from 1879, 1956 and 1985. The hypothesis from which the study/nstarts is that there should be a minimal difference between the three translations that/nderive from the same original, and that the existing differences are related to language/nevolution. Nevertheless the results are opposite to the initial hypothesis and they have/ncaused a number of issues for which no response has been obtained and, therefore, are/nopen to discussion

Análisis de dos traducciones de la obra The Importance of Being Earnest, de Oscar Wilde
Bejarano González, Iris
Anglès -- Traducció al castellà
Anglès -- Traducció al català
El siguiente trabajo consiste en el análisis de dos traducciones, una al catalán y otra al castellano, de la comedia The Importance of Being Earnest de Oscar Wilde. El análisis se centra en los aspectos más problemáticos de la traducción de esta obra
This paper aims to provide analysis and comparison of two different translations of Oscar Wilde‟s play „The Importance of Being Earnest‟, one into Spanish, and the other into Catalan. This analysis is focused on the most controversial aspects of the translation of this comedy, such as the translation of humour; the translation strategies for wordplay, the translation of cultural references, or the creation of neologisms. With this analysis we may notice the wide variety of procedures applicable to elements that involve a considerable difficulty and, therefore, need the translator special attention. At the same time, this analysis is useful to observe how many decisions has to take the translator involved in the dichotomy between choosing semantic or pragmatic equivalence in a text where the humor plays such a fundamental role. From the result of analysis it is found out that every translator has a tendency: either keep the translation as literal as possible to the source text, or prioritize the reader‟s comprehension over the literalness. We also check which the implications of each tendency are

Estudi terminològic i proposta neològica sobre la gastronomia catalana: Les postres catalanes
Vilà Duch, Laia
Gastronomia -- Terminologia
Català -- Traducció a l'anglès
És un estudi sobre el funcionament de la terminologia, en les llengües catalanes i anglesa, sobre un camp semàntic concret que no ofereix gaires equivalents cap a la llengua anglesa: la gastronomia, més en concret, les postres catalanes. Havent-hi aquest buit terminològic, també hi consta una sèrie de propostes neològiques
Specialized translation needs the help from terminology. Terminology pretends to study/nevery specialized subject that is not covered by some specific languages. Thanks to/nterminology, specialized communication is possible in a proper way, because behind/neach term there is a long process of study. This paper pretends to study the current/nnormalisation process that terminologists and sometimes translators do when a subject/nneeds to be covered. The object of study of this process is the Catalan gastronomy,/nwhich will be translated into English, because it is known by some studies that British/npeople are interested on sweets and chocolates and that the United Kingdom is the/nsecond European country consuming more sweets per person and per year. Following a/nlineal and accumulative process of documentation and analysis, this paper has all the/nnecessary information to create equivalent terms from the most popular desserts. After/nneologisms creation, news terms need to be proved that are the appropriate terms/nthrough a sociolinguistic study where people will relate new terms to its photography./nThe results of this study are quite positive and it can be seen that the word-formation/nhas been successfully made because almost every term has been understood by its new/ndenomination. This paper shows that a translator can be a terminologist with the proper/ndocumentation and study of a subject. Thanks to this paper it also seen that any subject/ncan be a specialized subject and every specialized subject needs its terminology in order/nto achieve the proper communication among cultures.

El doblatge i la subtitulació de The Nightmare before Christmas: una anàlisi contrastiva de les dues grans modalitats de la traducció audiovisual
Mascaró Genestar, Irene
Audiovisuals -- Traducció
Doblatge
Subtitulació
Aquest treball es proposa analitzar la traducció del doblatge i la subtitulació d'un text audiovisual concret per identificar les tendències i les estratègies de traducció que imperen en cada modalitat. Així mateix, pretén comprovar si a la pràctica es respecten les convencions i normes de la traducció audiovisual
Despite its large volume compared with other types of translation and the interest it holds for university students year after year, audio-visual translation is a field that has been poorly studied. By means of a contrastive analysis of the translation for dubbing and subtitling of a specific audio-visual text, the film The Nightmare before Christmas, this paper sets two objectives: to identify the characteristics and restrictions of dubbing and subtitling as well as the tendencies that prevail in their translation and to observe whether the norm has been correctly applied in both cases according to the literature consulted. For the purposes of this study, the film has been watched in order to spot the most representative excerpts so as to build up a corpus of examples in which four translation problems have been analyzed: song translation, proper names, cultural referents and idiolects. One of the most important observations carried out is that the translation in each modality is very different. A possible reason to explain this phenomenon could be that dubbing and subtitling pursue different goals that have been influenced to some extent by the specific characteristics and restrictions of each modality, as well as by the musical genre of the film

Colloquialism, humour, intertextuality, cultural references and feelings expressed/nthrough language are five of the most polemic aspects in general and audiovisual/ntranslation. Yet, these concepts have not been analysed deeply enough, so there are/nstill techniques and elements that can help or influence the translation that should be/ndefined. It is necessary to analyse in detail each one of these concepts in order to/nestablish which steps should be taken when translating them. To reach that, I will/ncarry out an extraction of tokens from the TV series Polseres vermelles and I will choose/nthe most representative ones for pragmatic, communicative, and semiotic/ndimensions. Afterwards, I am going to classify them according to those/naforementioned polemic aspects and I am going to comment them individually./nThe present dissertation, with descriptive aims, shows some results that may not be/nexpectable in Catalan-Spanish audiovisual translation, not much frequent and at first/nsight, or thought, not much difficult. Therefore, the great number of modulations/nand changes produced in the translation when compared to the original, and the fact/nthat these variations are not always acceptable make think that this domain needs/nmore experience and running-in, as well as more research, both academic and/ndidactic. From a descriptive approach, this paper shows a list of chosen examples/nthat are going to prove that the aforementioned aspects may suppose difficulties for/nthe translator for the dubbed version or, at least, are to be given special attention/n(particularly when, like here, some constraints exist).

Anglès -- Estats Units d'Amèrica -- Normalització
Anglès -- Variació -- Estats Units d'Amèrica
American English exhibits a great dialectal diversity, easily perceived in lexicon; so that questions are raised about which regionalisms are part of the mythical SAE and which are not. A small sample of regionalisms is checked against three standard dictionaries in order to determine the role regionalisms play in SAE.

Traducción mediante Omega-T de un informe del Parlamento Europeo sobre subvenciones pesqueras
Ruiz Raets, Andrea
El propósito de este trabajo ha sido traducir el informe Global Fisheries Subsidies (2013), publicado por el Parlamento Europeo, del inglés al español con la ayuda de Omega-T, una herramienta de traducción asistida gratuita. La conclusión principal del mismo es que los errores ocasionados por falsos amigos y calcos aún son muy habituales en este género.
Although reports are one of the most common texts made by the EU Parliament and the EU Commission, they have not been comprehensively studied so far. They are also a very important source of vocabulary to IATE (the EU inter-institutional terminology /ndatabase system) and to many bitexts used as a model by professional translators. The purpose of this paper is to translate and analyze the EU Parliament’s report Global Fisheries Subsidies (2013) with the aid of Omega-T, a free CAT tool. The paper also /nincludes, on one hand, a theoretical framework, which explains the main features of EU reports, and, specifically, of economical reports, along with some recommendations of the Fight the Fog movement for clearer writing. On the other hand, it also lists and explains the report’s most challenging problems, which have been divided into lexical, conventional and other types of aspects. The results of this study show that mistakes induced by false friends and loan translations are very usual in this genre, even in the different EU sources. It also demonstrates how useful a CAT tool can be to keep lexical coherence in the target text, despite some of the disadvantages of Omega-T. And, last but not least, it proves that translating EU reports should not be underestimated, since /nthey require a very high level of formality and accurateness. Furthermore, one of the direct implications of these results is that EU texts should be revised and analyzed more deeply before being published, especially those of the EU websites and IATE.

The main purpose of this work is to translate into Catalan a review article about two neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s), their main causes, such as oxidative stress, and exercise as one of the possible ways to moderate them. These /ndiseases are quite common in our society; however, there is still a need to know them better to improve their diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, the translation of the article provides information about this matter, which currently can be relevant to the Catalan /nreader and that is the reason why I chose this text. This translation is followed by a linguistic analysis, regarding the most important aspects a translator must be careful about, in any translation but also specifically in the scientific field. In order to elaborate /nthis work, I have consulted different sources, such as Catalan texts about the subject, dictionaries, and scientific translation reference works. They helped me to solve the main difficulties, which were, specially, finding the right option when translating some expressions or words, since any specialized text requires precision and appropriate equivalents; and also, reaching a natural language which does not give evidence that the text was first written in English. Once the work is finished, I believe I have achieved its main objectives, which were translating some specific knowledge to another language/nand highlighting the main linguistic difficulties with possible solutions. Hence, despite the fact that it is mainly of academic nature, this work can also be useful for any person interested in the article’s subject and in the language used in specialized texts.

Adolescence is a stage of transition, changes and evolution in a person‟s life. This period, like any other, is defined by characteristics that allow us to frame it and differentiate it from other periods; and one of them is the way we communicate and talk. Thus, this study aims to analyze this kind of language, referred to herein as youth /nlanguage within the spoken language, and the base to do so is the analysis of the Spanish translation of the first chapter of the American television series Awkward (translated as La chica invisible). Henceforth, the purpose is to see how the translator has faced this kind of changing and evolving language, establishing this way the /ndecisions and the most used translation techniques in this field; and provide a theoretical framework that encompasses all of them. Through some illustrative examples from the overall analysis of the translation (carried out from different areas of the language), the /nmost used translation techniques have been observed to tackle this first chapter, and all this bearing always in mind the differences between the source culture and the target culture. The results of this study are diverse: it shows the translation techniques that are /nmostly used; it helps to determine the typical characteristics of the so called youth slang; it reinforces the idea of what issues are most relevant in youth conversations (from the point of view of criptwriters), and it also demonstrates the influence of English television series in the Spanish culture and the constant need of the translator to update his knowledge.

Onze metres. el procés de creació i traducció d'una revista de futbol trilingüe
Fuentes Parés, Aitor
Feliu, Judit
En aquest treball s’analitzen tres eines de traducció automàtica gratuïtes per tal de demostrar fins a quin punt és necessària la figura d’un traductor humà a l’hora de traduir i editar textos professionals, fins i tot entre llengües molt properes.
The main purpose of this essay is to show that, even if we can count on some automatic machines for translating, there will always be the need of having an actual translator or a copy editor to guarantee the quality of a text created to be published. This paper is based on an actual magazine, which did not exist before starting the paper, and it will try to explain the process of creation and correction of the texts that can be found in it. It will also try to show the utility of a machine translation (MT) in the process of translating texts from Catalan into Spanish, by analyzing two basic kinds of texts and from the point of view of linguistics, syntactic, and lexical approaches that will highlight the pros and the cons of using this tools. The tools analyzed are Google Translator, a statistical machine translator, and LucySoftware and Apertium, which both are rules-based translators. All the translation options will be seen with the original text and a human-made translation in order to compare when needed. The results shown will emphasize the need of a professional translator even though some of the tools are quite good at specialized texts.

Comic translation between the Spanish and Catalan languages is a branch of literary translation that is not easy to classify and that has been studied very little so far. Apart from all the difficulties of translating literature concerning linguistics different kind of barriers have to be taken into account such as character limits, balloon sizes and the visual component. The aim of this paper is, on the one hand, to analyze the comic Españistán: este país se va a la mierda by Aleix Saló and classify its features, strongly marked colloquially; and, on the other hand, to determine which are the most problematic aspects and to provide a solution and translation into Catalan for each of them. The methodology of this study has consisted on the speech study of the Spanish comic, the extraction of vocabulary and phraseology and the proposed translations. To accomplish these objectives, several bilingual dictionaries between Catalan and Spanish languages have been used, as well as colloquial language works and the language portal of the Catalan Broadcasting Corporation TV3. The results show that despite the complexity of the task of translating comics between Catalan and Spanish, a solution will always be possible depending on the degree of the translator’s competence and skills, but it is also important to highlight the need for a firm foundation to serve as reference for future literary translators.

La traducció adaptada a la música de tres chansons
Lunes Pulido, Paula
Todó, Lluís Maria, 1950-
Hem traduït al català tres chansons renaixentistes tenint en compte la rima, la mètrica i l’accentuació i els trets de la seva música. A més, el moyen français ha estat un punt molt important en l’elaboració del treball. També hem situat el context de les cançons i les hem analitzat.
The chanson is a well-studied genre by the scholars of music of the Renaissance, but the act of translating it has been an exercise rarely carried out in the translation history. In this paper we have undertook the translation of three French Renaissance chansons parisiennes: Tant que vivray en aage florissant, Vous perdez temps de me dire mal d’elle and Douce memoire, en plaisir consomée. We have translated them into Catalan by taking into account the characteristics of the poems and the features of the music that gives them voice: we had to understand the musical notation of the sixteenth century and to identify the musical phrasing of the four voices of each chanson. Moreover, we had to analyze the original texts of the three chansons keeping in mind the rhyme, the syllabic meter and the accentual scheme of each line. Finally, the specifications of the language of the moyen français have been another important item. Therefore, we have introduced this paper with a theoretical context. Following this introduction, we find the heart of the paper, the Catalan translation adapted to the music of the three chansons that respond to a hypothetical assignment: the celebration of a concert dedicated to the Renaissance in the Municipal Conservatory of Barcelona. Later, we give an exemplifying explanation of the main translation problems of the chansons. This paper shows that when translating a text in relation with music, the translator must take into account a lot of circumstances concerning the music genre and the poems.

Traducción al español de dialectalismos a partir de un cómic del Quebec
Moraleda Navarro, Irene
Naro, Guilhem, 1959-
Este trabajo tiene el objetivo de estudiar un caso muy usual en los estudios de traducción: traducir diferentes dialectos de una obra original. Un dialecto lleva detrás una cultura, así que es muy difícil traducir manteniendo el mismo efecto. Este trabajo pretende aportar una buena solución al problema.
This work has the objective of studying a very usual problem in translation studies,/nwhich is the translation of different dialects that appear in an original work. A dialect/ninvolves a whole culture behind, so it’s very difficult to translate it maintaining the/nsame effect. Given that the degree of Translation and Interpretation has the language as/nthe main subject of study; it is a nice objective to work on a real case of a translation/nthat could have been done better./nThis case is the comic Les hommes. This comic plays all the time with the French/nlanguage and its varieties from Québec and France and it is a very important part of it./nThe official translation into Spanish has missed everything about the language aspect of/nit, turning the translation into a work that does not stand out from the rest; it has turned/ninto a plane work./nThis work has the objective of analyzing the different varieties and dialects that can be/nfound in French and Spanish and give the best option to turn the translation into a work/nwhere language is the most important thing

Las bromas y los juegos de palabras en interpretación simultánea: estudio de caso de/nEl hormiguero
Cruz Espinasse, Dominique
Boéri, Julie
La interpretación simultánea del humor en un programa de televisión en directo no es tarea fácil. Este trabajo recopila extractos de El hormiguero que contienen fragmentos humorísticos para así analizar su rendición en lengua meta. Se estudian las técnicas empleadas y se proponen otras soluciones para ofrecer estrategias de interpretación.
Puns and jokes are frequently used on entertainment TV shows and interpreting humour/nis not always an easy task. Short preparation time, improvisation and creativeness are/nfactors that come together when interpreting humour, thus special skills are required./nInterpreting a pun or joke literally may not work, hence recipients will not laugh. In this/npaper we present a corpus created from extracts, both in the source and target languages,/nof the Spanish television program El hormiguero 3.0. The aim of this corpus is to/ngather, identify and analyse humoristic snippets from El hormiguero 3.0 in order to/nprovide strategies and suggestions for humour interpreting, specifically focusing on/nsimultaneous interpreting on television. I then examine other possible solutions to the/nextracts when deemed necessary and appraise the results for other simultaneous/ninterpreting situations. Results show that interpreting jokes and puns is possible when/nthe target language has the same resources to create the humour. When reformulating is/nimpossible, then an explanation becomes necessary. In addition to offering some/nsolutions to humour interpreting, these findings suggest techniques so that interpreters/ncan render humour effectively. By creating this corpus I fulfil the need to gather/ntogether practices and methods in order to accomplish effectively the complex task of/ninterpreting humour.

Análisis de la traducción de los referentes culturales en Friends
Mor Polo, Laura
Martínez Tejerina, Anjana
En este trabajo se analiza el modo en el que se han traducido algunos de los referentes culturales que aparecen en la primera temporada de la serie Friends, con el fin de demostrar que muchos se han traducido a pesar de no ser conocidos en la cultura meta
Every year lots of comedies, both films and TV series, are dubbed into Spanish. Many/nof them base most of their humour on cultural references. Translators have the/nobligation to keep the same humorous intention when it comes to transfer them, but it is/nvery difficult to determine the exact target spectator’s knowledge of a certain reference./nThe main aim of this paper is to analyze how some cultural references have been dealt/nwith in the dubbed version of Friends, more specifically in the first season, to be able to/ntest two hypothesis: that a large number of cultural references have been transferred/ndespite not being known in the target culture and that references have been translated by/ndifferent means depending on the thematic area they belong to. In order to test the first/nhypothesis, a survey has been carried out to establish the target culture’s knowledge of/nparticular referents. Then 70 cultural referents have been analyzed and, taking into/naccount the survey results, a different –and hopefully more effective– solution has been/nprovided when necessary. Regarding the second hypothesis, it has been tested by/nclassifying the references by translation technique and thematic area, so differences/nbetween areas can be expressed as percentages. Both percentages from the survey and/nfrom the classification allow us to affirm that the two hypothesis are true. Basically, this/nstudy shows the difficulty of determining the target audience’s cultural background and/nthe need for a reception study in this field.

Traducción comentada de Summer in February, de Jonathan Smith
Giménez Galiano, Xènia
Alsina i Keith, Victòria
Este trabajo contiene la traducción de un fragmento de la novela Summer in February y el análisis de los aspectos más destacables del texto original y del texto meta. Se centra especialmente en la traducción de los recursos fónicos, los referentes culturales, el registro y la intertextualidad.
One of the most frequent assertions made by translation scholars is that translators learn/ntheir job by practising, although it is also stressed that they need to be able to reflect on/nthe process and justify their choices. Consequently, it is crucial to combine theory and/npractice. In this framework, the present bachelor thesis provides a Spanish translation of/nthe novel Summer in February (1995), written by Jonathan Smith, along with an/nanalysis of the most relevant aspects of the process and the source and target texts. The/nmain reason for selecting this topic was to allow me to provide new information and/nbuild upon my existing skills. Specifically, I was interested in working independently/nfor the first time with a long text, which had not been translated, about an artist, Alfred/nMunnings, who should be better known. I was also interested in working on a literary/ntranslation at least once. By using monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, translation/nhandbooks and articles, this dissertation aims to provide a faithful, accurate and/nidiomatic target text, as well as to identify key challenges and justify certain decisions./nThese goals ultimately serve to prove that relevant skills and knowledge, such as/ntranslation competence and proficiency in understanding English and English culture/nand writing in Spanish, have been internalised. These objectives take form in a/ntranslation and an analysis with examples about the translation of cultural references,/nwordplay and register in Summer in February. Overall, this paper shows the difficulties/nassociated with these elements of translation, along with the importance of paying/nattention to them.

Die wahrnehmung des begriffes "badisch":Eine studie zur wahrnehmungsdialektologie in südbaden
Espinosa Arroyo, Cristina
Treball de fi de grau en traducció i interpretació
Tutor: Tutor/a: Martin Fischer
Die Arbeit gehört zum relativ neuen Bereich der Wahrnehmungsdialektologie. Sie befasst sich mit den verschiedenen Dialekten, die im Raum des ehemaligen Großherzogtums Baden gesprochen werden und einer Studie über die Wahrnehmung des Begriffes Badisch, die die Bevölkerung von diesem Gebiet darstellt.
Perceptual dialectology has being intensively studied over the last decades, also in the/ncase of German dialects. It describes the perception of a non-linguist regarding several/naspects of dialects (linguistic and non-linguistic, such as identity through dialect). As/npart of this field, in this paper a particular case will be analyzed. It is said that in the/nformer kingdom of Baden, in the South-West of Germany, a dialect called Badisch is/nspoken. However, Badisch is just a generic term of politic origin that describes all the/ndialects spoken in that area, which are actually three: Oberrheinalemannisch,/nBodenseealemannisch und Hochalemannisch. The main goal of this project is to find/nout whether the inhabitants of Baden actually believe that Badisch is a dialect or they/nknow it is just a term. To achieve it, a survey has been carried out by Internet. The/nparticipants were also asked about personal information like age, field of studies/work/nand languages they spoke, in order to see if these variables play a role. Moreover, they/nhad to name their specific region and the dialect spoken there. Results show that only 2/nevery 10 of the responders know about Badisch being just a word, while a third thinks/nBadisch is actually a dialect or language. Very few people can say the scientific name of/ntheir area’s dialect, whereas they speak about the feeling of belonging it involves and/nare worried about its future. It is outstanding that people’s perception, in most cases,/ndoes not match the scientific one.

Charles Bukowski is one of the most important and influential American writers of the/ntwentieth century and, however, is one of the least studied academically. This article/nfocuses on the analysis of two Spanish translations of his story, Aftermath of a Lenghty/nRejection Slip, from a study of the style and the most characteristic components of the/nauthor's prose. It also relies on the description and contextualization of translations and/ntranslators, which will be supported by a personal interview with one of them. The/nanalysis focuses first on the formal aspects of the text which cause more difficulties in/ntranslation, such as spontaneous prose, orality marks or emphatic ortotipography./nSubsequently, it centres into semantic aspects, such as humor, slang or other problems/nassociated with the ambiguity of the text. In this process, we compare both translations/nwith the original, discussing the translators’ solutions in each case and we comment/ntheir differences in dealing with the text, as well as his different levels of knowledge of/nthe author’s style. As we look at these aspects, we can see the importance of acquiring/nthis kind of contextual knowledge to undertake the task of translating and also the/ndisadvantages that result from his previous ignorance.

Sequences of two or three words co-occur together in most of the languages: this/nparticular point of linguistics is known as collocations. On the one hand, native speakers/nknow which words co-occur with others because of their knowledge of the language./nOn the other hand, non-native speakers who try to learn a specific language do not/nknow this facet and have to work to incorporate this aspect of the foreign language to/nimprove their skills. Collocations and the co-occurrence of words are an issue that has/nnot been properly treated in the majority of teaching materials related to Spanish foreign/nlanguage learning. In this paper we present a specific study related to collocations, we/nanalyze learning concepts to teach collocations specifically to students who study/nSpanish as a foreign language, and we also analyze some textbooks used to teach/nSpanish. Finally, we create a teaching sequence where we intend to teach and work with/nsome specific collocations constructed with the following Spanish verbs: dar, echar and/nhacer. Our analysis of the current material used to teach Spanish and the learning/nsequence paper created to teach some Spanish collocations motivate an argument about/nthe current status of collocations teaching and the real need to motivate the use of/nteaching sequences in order to present and to teach collocations to students.

Parce que je t'aime; Traducción y comentario

Treball de fi de grau en traducció i interpretació
Este trabajo consta de la traducción de la obra literaria de Guillaume Musso Parce que je t’aime, con un lenguaje moderno y bilingüe, pues introduce términos de la lengua inglesa; y también de un comentario en el que se presenta al autor y su obra y en el que se analiza dicha traducción y sus dificultades.
As the writer and translator Octavio Paz said in his translation theory, it doesn’t matter/nwhether for an Interlingua translation or an Intralingua translation, because the aim is/nthe same at the end: to understand. The goal of this paper is to translate a French drama/nbook in order to approach citizens to foreign literature and encourage the translation/nactivity in the same way. But, the most important target of this paper is to successfully/novercome translation competences in this last year course while having a good time/nworking on it and instilling the desire for translation, the enthusiasm for this field, the/npleasure to have initiatives when start a new stage, to aspire to something more than just/neasy comfort. For this paper I chose to translate a drama book form a young and wellknown/nFrench author that is the only one of his entire saga that has not been translated,/nso I think this is a good reason to motivate its translation too. This paper includes a part/nof chapter’s translation, a part of introduction of the author and the literary work,/nevaluation criteria of the difficulties of the chapter’s translation and a conclusion about/na critical reflection of all this paper. It explores a twofold challenge within my personal/nlife as well as my academic studies. This paper shows and arguments the problems that/na translator has to face when doing a literary multilingual translation and how these/nproblems have been resolved.

From intertitles in the silent film era to modern dynamic inserts, throughout the history of film/nwritten texts have been inserted on screen as a visual resource to convey meaning. Yet, to date,/nthey have scarcely been the focus of scholarly study. British television series Sherlock,/ncharacterized by the recurring use of inserts or 'superimposed texts' (also called captions), is a/nbig hit and has been exported worldwide. The translation of the inserts has proved a great/nchallenge; because of its novelty a common strategy has not yet been developed and each region/nhas instead chosen its own modality and technique, with varying results. The Catalan version/nhas opted to subtitle these inserts, whereas, in the Spanish version, they are entirely replaced by/nSpanish equivalent inserts. The aim of this paper is twofold; first, to research the process of/ncreating and translating the inserts in Sherlock by consulting with professionals who have/nworked on the English, Catalan or Spanish version of the series; second, to describe and/ncompare the subtitling and replacement modalities with two analyses: a qualitative analysis,/nwith examples described according to a model of six semiotic dimensions (content, position,/ntiming, graphics, animation and sound effects), and a quantitative analysis, with statistical data/non the Sherlock inserts from seasons one and two. This study presents and contrasts the pros/nand cons of both the subtitling and replacement modalities, and concludes with considerations/nregarding the need to research and develop multidisciplinary strategies and techniques that/nfacilitate the creation, translation and distribution of audiovisual works incorporating text/ninserts.

Despite the progressive political and economical integration process of the European/nUnion, the European public sphere has often been observed to be underdeveloped. The/nobjective of this paper is to give a general insight into media attention and public/nopinion on European politics in Spain and Germany in the weeks before the election of/nthe European Parliament in 2014 by means of a contrastive analysis of editorials and/nopinion pieces published in two influential newspapers of either countries (Süddeutsche/nZeitung, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, El País and El Mundo). The central questions/nto be addressed are how closely and from what perspective European politics are/ncommented on in the different newspapers (1) and whether the national perspective or/nthe ideological orientation are more influential in the newspapers opinion making (2)./nFor this purpose the last three weeks before the election of the European Parliament/nwere searched for editorials and opinion pieces on European politics and relevant/narticles were collected into corpora. Those were used for a contrastive analysis which/ncould show that the attention paid to European concerns in the national newspapers/ndepended largely on their importance for the national audience. Thus national concerns/nwere decisive in the choice of the topics, the ideological orientation was observed to be/nmore influential in the position of each of the publications on those concerns. Although/nthe analyzed newspapers expressed similar views on the EU foreign policy and EU/ninstitutions, stronger divergences could be observed in the area of economic and/nmonetary politics.

Die unabhängigkeit kataloniens aus deutscher sicht: anwendung und einfluss von sprachlichen mitteln in der deutschsprachigen presse im Internet
Schreiber, Krystyna
The Catalan Consultancy Process is a passionate historical moment. Being German, and/nliving in Barcelona, I am a witness of how this Catalan reality is understood in Germany./nThere seems to be a general disagreement or scepticism in terms of this independence/nprocess. Parting from a linguistic perspective and being aware of the persuasive power of/nmass media, the present study was designed to analyze the language used in the main/nGerman media in order to determine if there could be any influences in such perception./nTherefore, we reviewed up to 88 articles and editorials in 12 newspapers, from which we/nchose 44 as the most relevant examples. Those examples were selected with the main focus/non linguistic features such as phraseological and metaphorical units, which, according to/nTrew, could reveal “the ideology or set of values inherent in the discourse”1/n. The results have been highly revealing: The linguistic analysis of the main German media shows a/npolitical bias, designed on purpose to influence public opinion, using specific linguistic/nresources. Also it demonstrates a clear lack of information on the economical and political background of Catalan motivation towards the consultancy process. Hence, this analysis turns out to be a useful tool to understand what is written between the lines and to outline further investigations and actions necessary for the German understanding of the process.
Mithilfe der sprachlichen Analyse von Zeitungsartikeln wird ermittelt, wie die deutschen Medien den katalanischen Unabhängigkeitsprozess darstellen. Laut Experten der Medienlinguistik, ermöglicht die Verwendung sprachlicher Mittel eine selektive Darstellung der Realität in der Berichterstattung. Die Analyse zeigt eine starke Manipulation der Nachrichten durch die Sprache in zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen.

Additionally, there is also a comments/nsection where the most complex, problematic and unique aspects of this field that have/nappeared throughout the paper or the previous documentation period are gathered and/nanalyzed. There are also three terminology glossaries containing a large number of/nwords and expressions which Spanish analogous require further explanation due to their/ndifficulty. By reading this last section, it is possible to perceive the features of scientific/nlanguage, such as conciseness and precision and to note to what extent are these features/nessential in the wording of this kind of text. Facing a text of such difficulty has been an/nopportunity to realize that absorbing a great amount of literature on the subject,/nsuspecting of every single word and not being afraid of spending too much time in/nsolving each problem is essential in order to be able to provide an excellent quality/ntranslation.

La modulació de la veu en la interpretació: marc teòric i aplicació pràctica
Sánchez Molas, Mireia
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
Among the tools that interpreters should manage, voice plays a prominent role./nHowever, despite its importance figures in many of the existing quality models, limited/nregard has been payed for the means by which interpreters voice meanings. On the basis/nof such observation, this work intends to provide a specific learning tool which could/nhelp students control their vocal production. The research takes the personal experience/nas a reference to create a learning plan —within the framework of paralinguistic/ntheories and quality assessment studies— which fits the needs of a particular student/ninitially, to further be extrapolated to other trainee interpreters. To get profitable results,/nfirstly a series of previously recorded interpretations were assessed. We based on that/ndata to collect and execute 15 exercises which act on different parameters constituting/nor affecting interpreters’ voice, such as breathing, pitch, articulation or intonation. We/nthen evaluated the utility of the exercises assessing 4 post-exercise interpretations,/ntaking also into account the opinion of 13 users. Both the auto-assessment and the user/nsurveys confirmed that the practise had affected positively the interpretation product./nNevertheless the findings also showed the plan was not sufficient to consolidate/nimprovements, since they become indiscernible when the difficulty of the source/ndiscourse was higher. This objection motivates the argument that a possible solution/nwould be comprehensively addressing voice production skills at early stages of training/nto offer students the chance to internalise correct behaviours, which could prevent/ndamage to their phonatory system and result in a finer performance.

Quim Monzó is one of the most important contemporary writers in Catalan language and his style, contradicting normative grammars and dictionaries, has not been deeply studied. The aim of this current paper is to investigate the personal style of Quim Monzó taking the last book he published in 2007, Mil cretins. By analysing a selection of tales, this work tries to conclude which type of language the author uses. However, this personal style can be difficult to translate keeping the same meaning and tone. Both Catalan and Spanish have many characteristics in common due their linguistic proximity. Nevertheless, translating between has a high number of difficulty. This is the reason why this analysis will be done through the comparison of the original Catalan version and its translation into Spanish, Mil cretinos, done by the translator Rosa Alapont. The analysis is divided in five main sections, which highlight the most important features: phonetics, morphosyntax, vocabulary, ortotypography and stylistic phenomena with examples taken directly from the books. The results show that the translator has succeeded in her job of translating Quim Monzó’s style and his colloquial language since most of the solutions are well chosen and genuine. However, in some cases omissions and change of meaning are found and they could have been solve with other options most appropriate but it can be seen and most of the options are selected due a relevant purpose because literal translation wound not work in the translation of Quim Monzó’s style.

The latest news of the Ukraine political situation caused the European Union to/naccomplish negotiations more quickly with the neighbour country, Republic of/nMoldova, which is also my native country. These negotiations were derived in an/nAssociation Agreement, a type of institutional legal text that has not been studied yet/nand which has its own structure and linguistic characteristics, in addition to an/nextraordinary and specialized economic terminology and phraseology. In the translation/nof the Association Agreement fragments I faced with lexical and non lexical problems,/ncommented and deeply described in the annexes of this paper. The translation problems/nhave different grades of difficulty in their solution and the resources offered by the EU/nnot always gave an adequate answer. Furthermore, I find the solution of some terms just/nbecause I understand Russian and Rumanian, both are Moldova’s official languages./nFrom this paper I learned more information about the relations between EU and/nMoldova, about the linguistic movements of the simplification of legal and/nadministrative English which characteristics, in my opinion, are reflected by the/nlanguage used in this text, and how to use a bibliographic manager. To solve the/nproblems of such translation, it is important to have knowledge about legal and/neconomic concepts or even more, the knowledge of the cultures of the original and/ntarget texts. Influencia del inglés en el comportamiento lingüístico de los economistas
Francés Gandia, Àngela
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
Tutor: Carmen González
At present, English plays an important role as a vehicle for communication in the area/nof economics and finance. This has a clear implication in economic lexicon, which/npractically is created in English and afterwards is adopted into our language through/nvarious processes of lexical creation as the loanword, the literal translation or/nderivation. This paper has arisen from the observation of certain linguistic behavior/namong experts in the field of economics and finance in which an increasing trend in/nusing English terms instead of the Spanish equivalents can be observed. Thus, this paper/nis aimed to determine which are the motivations and scenarios in which this fact is/ndeveloped as well as the actual scope of this situation from a linguistic perspective. By/nmeans of a textual corpus of ten economic texts written in Spanish by specialists in/ndifferent blogs, we have provided examples that demonstrate the linguistic dependence/nof the English language. We have been able to determine through various scenarios in/nwhich economists face with this dependency that English implies several features and/nconditions which explain why English constructions prevail over Spanish most genuine/nexpressions. Eventually, this paper begs the question whether the presence of English is/nsuch that it could be considered another independent feature attached to economic/ndiscourse.
En la actualidad, el inglés tiene una gran implicación en el ámbito de la economía y las/nfinanzas. El presente trabajo pretende hacer una radiografía del comportamiento lingüístico de los /neconomistas para determinar cuáles son las consecuencias lingüísticas derivadas de la dependencia /nlingüística del inglés en el ámbito de la economía y las finanzas.

La traducción del documental de naturaleza: estudio de La Planète Blanche
González Muñoz, José Manuel
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
Tutor: Eduard Bartoll
Translating wildlife documentaries is not regarded as a substantial task by the audiovisual industry. However, terminological aspects and the semiotic interactions inherent to any given audiovisual text complicate the task. In this work we analyse the French-Spanish translation of La Planète Blanche, a wildlife documentary about the Arctic Ocean, so as to find the set of restrictions and priorities that drove the translation process and to extract a set of core aspects when translating wildlife documentaries. In analysing the text from three different perspectives, technical subtitling aspects, linguistic and cultural aspects, and a contrastive analysis of the source and target texts, we come across some unexpected conclusions. Surprisingly enough for a high quality audiovisual programme, we unveil a pattern of reverse translation. Priorities and restrictions of the translation are shaped by this issue. Finally, we propose a set of main elements when translating wildlife documentaries, like a correct usage of terminology and the possibilities of using semiotic interaction when dealing with subtitles and dubbing on the one hand and with images on the other, in the scope of providing better apprehension of the information. We hope that this work can add to the line of/nresearch that believes in documentaries as a fine tool for spreading knowledge.

The oral discourse as social interaction is a topic of investigation for sociocultural pragmatics. In this sense, the choice of different verbal courtesy strategies is essential to keep the balance in the interaction and determines the success in communication. Nevertheless, this choice in a specific event like a parliamentary debate depends on social and political factors which have influence o/nn the speaker’s intention. The aim of this article is, on the one hand, to analyze the di fferent courtesy strategies used by the participants in a parliamentary debate in order to determine how the interlocutor's positive and negative image is treated, and on the other hand, to analyze the marks/nthrough which the speakers define their political p osition. In this article, we have contrasted three different ways of treating the interlocutor’s image. We present a corpus of several statements representative of courtesy which have been analyzed in order to see not only the speaker's communicative intention but also the modal elements which are used for emphasizing or attenuating the linguis tic attack to the interlocutor's image. The results show a tendency to attack or protect th/ne interlocutor's positive image and a greater use of metaphors and epistemic modal adverb/ns. Also, the speakers define their political position through the introduction of linguistics marks in their discourse. This analysis can be extended to a wider corpus to verify the data and can also open new lines of research for the knowledge of the complex mental mechanisms that form the/nsocial interactions.

Der Erzähler in literarischen Texten: mit Beispielen von Franz Kafka und Patrick Süskind.
Satta, Salvatore
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
Tutor: Martin Bodo Fischer
Dem Literaturübersetzer bedarf es eines durchdringenden Verständnisses der Figur des Erzählers in literarischen Texten. Diese Bachelorarbeit erforscht, inwiefern der Erzähler das Konstrukt eines Autors ist und welche Erzählertypen man unterscheiden kann, um einen tieferen Einblick in die Architektur der Belletristik zu gewinnen.
Translating literature requires a deeper analysis of a story’s most important component: the narrator. This paper tries to give an insight in how a narrator conveys meaning in a story. First, the story of authorship, the author of modern and postmodern literature is analysed, and second, the narrative points of view: the first-, the second-, and the third-person narrator. The analysis is illustrated with examples of two known representatives of German literature: Franz Kafka and Patrick Süskind. Both can count as a typical example of a modern and a postmodern author, respectively. Furthermore, the analysis in two parts (about the author and about the narrator) shows the interrelation between the times an author lives in and the kind of narrator he tends to create. The aim of this investigation is to find out to what extent a narrator is the creation of an author, and to what extent the narrator’s creation is ruled by structures somewhat external to the conscious choices of the author. Last but not least, the analysis tries to highlight what consequences the various approaches to literature can have on the translator’s decisions.

H. P. Lovecraft: la importància de l’estil en els relats de terror i la seva traducció
Martín Marro, Aina
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
Tutora: Ana Mata Buil
Horror literature has increasingly gained importance during the last centuries. Authors such as Edgar Allan Poe and Howard Philips Lovecraft have proven to be the pillars of modern horror. In this /nparticular case, we would like to discuss and, therefore, study how a particular writing style of an author can affect a horror story. For this reason, this article will focus on H. P. Lovecraft, the founder of modern science fiction, analyzing his style and the traces of his life reflected on his work. The different elements that could have influenced the author to create his stories are discussed, and the /nthings that make it unique are pointed out—the structure of his texts, the literary figures that appear, the role played by register in every situation or how the suspense is built and developed. We must /nnot forget to mention the importance of those who influenced the author, specially E. A. Poe. The findings of this study will be illustrated by the provided translation into Catalan of the stories /n„Dagon‟ and „The Statement of Randolph Carter‟, both selected to reflect the main topics of the writer. The first one is more fantastical and related to cosmichorror, introduced by the author himself. The second is a reminder of the classic 18th century gothic horror, taking place in a cemetery. Yet, both share an essential common feature that appears in Lovecraft's texts: our fear of the unknown.

Languages are constantly creating new words and neology is the linguistic discipline dealing with new lexical units. This paper aims to describe the main role of formal neologisms, namely, units created from the language own resources such as prefixes, suffixes, abbrevia-tion, or initializing in different mass media published in Catalan, as well as, if appropriate, to ascertain whether bilingual newspapers could be influenced by the original language in its Catalan version. The initial idea was to create a fairly representative sample that could provide reliable data for a comparative analysis. In order to build this corpus, it is worth noting that the extraction was done manually from a total of ten newspapers that corres-pond to two daily publications in March of Ara and El Punt - Avui, two monolingual news-papers, and two more for each Catalan version of La Vanguardia, El Periódico and El País. The final corpus consists of 1,239 formal neologisms. Some of the observed phenomena have been compared with the more recent works about lexical neology to corroborate cur-rent tendencies. From a lexical point of view, the results showed that there is a strong pro-ductivity of formal neologisms as opposed to other word formation resources like semantic change and loanwords. Regarding to the quality of new words, it seems that differences between daily newspapers are unnoticeable and do not worsen the Catalan language of written press.

La censura en la traducción de Homage to Catalonia, de Gorge Orwell
Ripoll Gadea, Mireia
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
During the forty years of Franco‘s dictatorship the national literature and the translated one were under his regime‘s control. There was an official censorship which was in charge of controlling and modifying all the literature that was published in the country. In this investigation we intend to show how the censorship used to work, analyzing for this issue the censure applied on Orwell‘s Homage to Catalonia, published in Spain in 1970. With this aim this study attempts to focus on Orwell and his work (Animal Farm, 1984 and Homage to Catalonia) to discover how the censure behaves and which are its patterns. In order to do this we had to read up on this period, the author and his work, and then we analyzed the censorship procedure, comparing the English version with the Spanish one. We found out that Animal Farm had not suffered any censorship, but 1984 and Homage to Catalonia had different marks in which the censorship had modified or omitted things. Then we analyze all these marks, and in which paragraphs or words it is done and why. So, we present the results on a table showing the passage which is modified on the original version and on the translation and specifying what strategy of translation has been used for one or another passage. The main conclusion of this paper is that even with modifications and paragraphs omitted the censorship allows the editors to publish these books, and it was because they wanted to use those books with crossing-out, cuts and rewrites with propagandistic purposes for the regime‘s own benefits.

Les gens du Balto, més enllà de la llengua
Mulleras Escofet, Júlia
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
Since the youth riots of 2005, and especially after the jihadist attacks of 2015, banlieues have been at the core of French news and political debate. However, the information spread and gathered about these areas rarely derives from local sources. In this sense, Faïza Guène’s Les gens du Balto is a speaker for all the citizens of these so-called ghettos. The present dissertation contributes to the lack of literature in Catalan about the conflict by providing an analysis of the impact that the book has and may potentially have on this social crisis. The conducted work had three objectives: a) identifying the source of the conflict, b) uncovering the stigma in French suburbs, and c) understanding the role of language and literature in society. My research is guided by the linguistic, sociolinguistic and social analysis of Guène’s book. The results show that the current situation cannot be analyzed without looking backwards, since the social context stems from an identity crisis and wrong policies. I have identified two positions that are arising from this situation: one polarizes the society, driven by racism and hate; the other one starts in the banlieues and struggles to create a positive identity through its language. Faïza Guène’s book focuses on the latter: it has a function beyond the simple and easy-to-read story that she cleverly weaves. All its details become smart hints for the acute reader —by tracking them we get to understand the implications of the crisis in the banlieues and work towards a solution that will give its citizens an identity and a voice to communicate with the rest of the République.

Traducción al español y glosario del libro Formentera, passa a passa per les vies públiques
Mayans Verdera, Marta
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
It is widely known that translation is a tool that enables us, translators, to convey a message from one language into another language, making it comprehensible for a target audience. Translation does not only happen between a foreign language and a/nmother tongue or between very distant languages, it often occurs between close languages such as Catalan and Spanish, which is precisely what this paper is about, a translation from Catalan into Spanish of the book Formentera, passa a passa per les/nvies públiques along with a glossary. It is a challenging book to translate given the fact that it contains poems, proverbs, maritime and land terminology used mostly in Ibiza and Formentera, etc. The aims of this project are on the one hand, to translate as/nmuch specialised terms as it is possible and on the other hand, to make a translation bearing in mind that the target audience will be wider in comparison to the one from the original book. Apart from a translation and a glossary, in which a context and a/ndefinition of the most specialised terms will be provided, this paper contains an analysis section as well, where the difficulties encountered during the translation process are briefly detailed and explained. This paper presents some equivalences for concepts that are usually preserved in the source language, contributes to increase the Spanish bibliography about the history of Formentera and to the target language itself, since it provides some neologisms.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the normativity of the language used in songs in Catalan based on a corpus of five songs from 20 different musical artists, which makes a total of 100 songs analysed. This collection of songs aims to offer a general view on the use of normative Catalan in different periods and geographical areas in Catalonia. This is an aspect of the Catalan language that has not been studied yet. Since music can influence on the way listeners speak, it is important to use language properly so that a wrong use does not create, nor perpetuate incorrect forms that can end up taking root and changing the language. First, the paper presents the different groups or singers taking into account some other factors that may influence on their language skills, apart from the geographical and historical ones. After that, it analyses the errors and divides them into three main sections: morphosyntax, vocabulary and ortotypography. Finally, it concludes that, on the one hand, the results show that there are no specific trends neither temporal or geographical; but on the other hand, it shows that there is a large number of mistakes and that there are many different types of errors. Therefore, this work criticises the poor use of language in songs and vindicates proof-readers’ work to ensure linguistic correctness.

Anàlisi de dues traduccions de Pastoralia, de George Saunders
Pagès Massot, Berta
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
George Saunders is an American writer who is considered as one of the establishers of the new terms for contemporary American fiction. This article focuses on the analysis of two Catalan translations of one of his stories, Pastoralia, from a study of the components that make a translation intricate. By means of contextualization of the author and his work, I have relied on many sources to define his style and prose in order to place him in the literary world. As for the translations and translators, I include a personal interview with one of them. The analysis focuses first on the formal aspects and how every translator is faced with the challenges of translating Saunders’ bittersweet style, filled with neologisms, colloquialisms, a lack of punctuation, hidden irony, spontaneous prose, orality marks or emphatic ortotipography. Subsequently, the analysis is fixated on the semantic, cultural and sociolinguistic aspects such as slang, humor and problems associated with the ambiguity of the text. In this process, I compare both translations with the originals while discussing the translators’ solutions. The main conclusions to be drawn from this comparison are that every translator offers his own interpretation and, as a result of this, the effects are substantially different.

The audiovisual translation from Spanish into Catalan is not a common practice and often the main purpose is questioned. In this study the Spanish movie Tapas from José Corbacho and Juan Cruz and its Catalan translation is analyzed paying attention to the colloquial language and the feigned orality to then be compared to the real orality. Furthermore, a comparison between the dubbing and the original text is made. The problems shown in the translation are the interferences between the two compared languages and the text's authenticity due to the real colloquial language. In the analysis, morphosyntactic, lexical, phonetic and discursive aspects related to the colloquial are presented, and the dialectal and functional variation. As a result, it is noticeable that it's a well-solved translation, even though there are a few errors involving coherence and adaptation to the dialectal variation. In this way, it is verified that the authenticity of the text is a crucial aspect to consider and to be able to obtain a genuine translation true to the original. The conclusions obtained from the analysis are that this traductological practice has specific difficulties that must be considered and be solved adequately to have a successful audiovisual product. Nevertheless, this is a specific study and to be able to generalize and extract more detailed conclusions, the analysis of a more extensive corpus should be done.

Estudi sobre la construcció resultativa i proposta de traducció al català
Grau i Dilla, Bernat
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
The resultative sentence is a recurrent construction of the English syntax. This type of sentences involves the use of an adjective or a prepositional phrase that specifies the change of state or displacement undergone by the referent of the sentence. As it involves two subevents that have a causal relation, this construction needs to be studied from both syntactic and semantic accounts. The goal of this paper is to analyze resultative sentences according to the type of verbs they appear with, either transitive or intransitive, and it is conceives for all thos Catalan speakers who translate from English, or simply use English as their work tool. The main research literature regarding this topic is discussed and several subtypes of resultative sentences are presented, explaining their syntactic properties and proposing equivalent syntactic structures in Catalan. Namely, the resultative sentence needs to be translated for somewhat equivalent structures that express result, or ending, such as final (or purpose) adverbial clauses, consecutive (or result) adverbial clauses, the use of gerunds , or the use of time and place adverbial complements. Finally, a corpus of naturally-ocurring examples from literary works is included along with their possible translations into catalan and a brief explanation about the translation and the syntactic and lexical choices. The corpus examples show that, although the proposing of equivalent sentences, the translation is most of the time determined/nby the context of the sentence, as we have observed with some examples in the corpus.

Spanische Sprache im 19. Jahrhundert: Traducción comentada
López Ninot, Gemma
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we offer a translation into Spanish of a specialised text written originally in German on the topic of Spanish language history. Second, we provide an analysis in which we comment on difficulties experienced while translating the selected chapter. The chosen source text is a chapter of the book Spanische Sprache im 19. Jahrhundert (‘Spanish language in the 19th century’; 1997) by Jenny Brumme. In the commentary, we analyse translation strategies regarding grammatical, syntactic and morphological elements such as the passive voice and nominalisation. As it is a specialised text particular attention is paid to the translation of terminology. Differences in text cohesion between German and Spanish are also highlighted. Our findings confirm some of the typical aspects that are troublesome for the translator and also provide some points which are not generally included in translation handbooks. Moreover, this paper may serve as a guide for translating specialised German texts into Spanish.

Variació diacrònica de la llengua de signes catalana (LSC)
Blasco Forniés, Marina
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
The Catalan Sign Language (LSC) is the natural language of the deaf and hard of hearing people in Catalonia. One of the main reasons of the Deaf Community's marginalization in our society is due to a lack of recognition. In order to improve more knowledge about Catalan Sign Language, I did a brief lexical study about diachronic variation in LSC, which studies the difference of signs and the factors thet influence its use throughout the discourse of two deaf people of different ages. This work shows the lexical richness of LSC vocabulary and the existence of a clear evolution in this language. This evolution responds to the users' needs as with other languages, no matter if they are oral or signed. This leads us to my second goal: to prove that it is an alive and natural language and to show the importance of it to raise awareness in society and reach the equality between deaf and hearing people.

Primera proposta de traducció al català de l’òpera Les Troyens à Carthage
Porta Serramià, Maria
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
Opera has always had a linguistic barrier due to the language in which the libretto is written and the one that speaks or knows the audience. Thus, translation has become crucial in order to break the above-mentioned barrier. The primary aim of this paper is to provide a Catalan translation of the French opera libretto Les Troyens à Carthage, the second part of the grand opéra Les Troyens, composed and written by Hector Berlioz in the nineteenth century. It should be noted that this is the first Catalan translation of this work. Translating opera libretti means that the translator has to face not only issues related to the translation itself (for instance, if its purpose is to provide a readable or singable translation), but also the fact that most operas are largely inspired by previous works, as this one, since it is mainly based on the second and fourth book of Virgil’s Aeneid. Therefore, the best Catalan translations of this classical book have been taken into account, as well as monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, specialised books on music, and translations of other Classics. This study includes three different parts: the first one mainly talks about the preliminary considerations concerning the author, the genre and the opera that is going to be translated; the second one presents the source text and the Catalan translation; the latter one gives some evaluation criteria related to the purpose of the translation that suits the most this paper, some difficulties that have arisen while translating this opera and how they have been solved. This paper concludes saying that the translator indeed has to do significant work related to a comprehensive documentation in order to provide an accurate translation.

Influencia de las ideas de Cicerón en algunos traductores españoles (siglos XV-XIX)
Burston Alonso, María
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
The objective of this project is to show the transcendency of Ciceron’s work and his value as one of the pioneers in the history of Spanish translation. It was these new facets that became apparent to me in recent examination of his work, which ultimately have given me the incentive for this project. To complete this work, I have taken at least one or, in some occasions, two representative writers with examples of their works from each century between 14th and 19th inclusive. After much analysing, I have hoped to confirm that Ciceron has been a constant factor in these writers and translator’s works. Not only do they take his theories on board but/nalso use them to justify their own work and take his theories forward. So, you can clearly see a definite evolution between the 14th and 19th centuries in their work. Isn’t it fascinating that all roads still lead to Rome?

La onomatopeya y su traducción
Márquez Prieto, Cristina
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
Onomatopoeic words form a class that has not been widely studied by linguists. Despite the large amount of onomatopoeia within original works that are translated into other languages, there are still not enough papers or even dictionaries dealing with this topic and the translation of onomatopoeic words. English has a considerable influence in the process of onomatopoeia translation, particularly on account of its facility to create them and the notable domination of English in the comic industry. This paper is focused on German and Spanish with the purpose of providing knowledge about onomatopoeia in these languages and describing diverse methodology to help translators with their task. By combining classification systems of different linguists, a selection of onomatopoeia and equivalents in German, Spanish, Catalan and English are classified in tables in order to contrast linguistic aspects. German and English, both Germanic languages present an important number of verbrepresentations and E rikativ (in German) which allow the transmission of not just onomatopoeic but also semantic information. However in Romance languages, the opposite occurs because representations simply provide an approximation of the phonetic transcription of the sound.

Traducción de la nostalgia catalana: el libro Jo també veia Bola de Drac
Martínez Soler, Marta
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
Translation between Catalan and Spanish has had little relevance in translation studies languages because they are so close. Though, there are cultural references and part of the linguistic background that requires a profound analysis for a correct translation. The aim of this paper is to find in each language’s background the best ways of translation from Catalan into Spanish keeping the register and considering the new target, which does not share most of the original references. In order to achieve this objective, different types of vocabulary are extracted and other textual forms with non-linguistic media must be adapted to the target text not only in content but also in form. In addition, intertextuality is another important issue because the references are linked to Catalan culture; they are unknown for Spanish public. With the purpose of obtaining satisfactory results, the technical translation procedure is applied based on the type and textual function. This functionality takes an informative tone in the Spanish version; the form is deleted when it is not possible to keep both. Due to support vocabulary and phraseology to treat, tools such as bilingual and monolingual dictionaries, corpus and Internet portals language queries, as Optimot, are used. The results had shown that with a good base of linguistic resources and depending on the level of the translator’s competence, it is possible to solve translation problems which involve a new approach to the target audience and the transfer of the form and content getting then a genuine result in the target language.

The 21st century society presents a large linguistic variety that, as a consequence, entails a need of learning languages in order to establish communicative situations between people from different cultures. Therefore, in the last decades, it is increasing the interest in learning foreign languages and the need of resources, tools and techniques of teaching. When learning foreign languages, book adaptations as easy reading are a usual tool. In languages like Catalan they still don’t have a long tradition, even though the market is starting to grow to provide resources to learn Catalan as a foreign language. This project analyses one of the most known books from Manuel de Pedrolo, called Mecanosrit del segon origen (translated in English as Second origin typescript) as an easy reading book, adapted within the collection «Català Fàcil». The analysis the book is based on the characteristics of typographical, linguistics and content adaptation provided by the publishing house Eumo. It is also analysed the fitting of the adaptation in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Traducció, anàlisi i revisió d’anuncis i eslògans publicitaris
Bautista Sifre, Patrícia
Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació
Advertising translation between Spanish and Catalan is a very narrow field. It is very difficult to find advertising written originally in Catalan or Spanish and since most of Catalan people understand Spanish, there are even fewer advertisements translated in this direction. The translators have a lot of difficulties in translating advertisements because they have to keep in mind aspects such as culture, language and customs of the target public. Moreover, in the specific case of Spanish-Catalan translation, the influence of Spanish into Catalan vocabulary and grammar has to be taken into consideration, due to the high influence of Spanish in colloquial Catalan. That being said, the aim of this project is to translate advertisements, which have a specific difficulty, between Catalan and Spanish./nThese advertisements have been translated using the most suitable method for each one: the creation method, the translation method or the foreign-looking method. There is a section in this project that includes advertisements that are already translated and for each is given an analysis. Furthermore, there is a part that incorporates advertisements which have strong traits of the source culture and language, as well as puns that make the process of translating extremely difficult./nThe results of this project show that it is very important for the translator to consider the culture and the characteristics of the language and grammar, of both source and target audience, in order to produce a genuine and suitable translation. In addition, it shows that even though Catalan and Spanish are closely related languages there are lots of difficulties in order to translate between them and there are also different aspects that have to be considered to not influence the translation and obtain a proper result, which has to be completely suitable for the target public./nFinally, this project shows the importance of translating between these two languages (even though most Catalan people can understand Spanish), in order to reach the normalisation of Catalan language and culture and put it in the same level as Spanish or English in the advertising field. Besides that, the translator must have a good knowledge of both languages in order to properly use target sources and create a plausible, genuine and suitable translation.
