“The liquidity crisis of the Spanish banks is largely due to the lack of confidence of foreign investors and, therefore, the changes that occur in the legislation should not affect the credibility, stability, legal certainty, predictability that markets expect”./nSergio Nasarre (2011)/nIn the current situation of economic crisis, many people have found they can no longer pay back the mortgage loans that were granted to them in order to purchase a dwelling. It is for this reason that, in light of the economic, political and social problems this poses, our paper studies the state of the Spanish real-estate system and of foreclosure, paying special attention to the solution that has been proposed recently as the best option for debtors that cannot make their mort-gage payments: non-recourse mortgaging. We analyze this proposal from legal and economic perspectives in order to fully understand the effects that this change could imply. At the same time, this paper will also examine several alternatives we believe would ameliorate the situation of mortgage-holders, among them legal reforms, mortgage insurance, and non-recourse mortgaging itself.

Infertility is a growing issue that affects thousands of Spanish couples; increasingly there are more and more people who cannot raise a family by themselves. Instead they have to resort to ART, /nadoption -local or international- or surrogacy abroad, a practice that many couples consider but that isn’t legalized in Spain. In this paper we have broken down each option in detail by analysing the market, differentiating its variants and specific steps, calculating its “price” and suggesting possible improvements that could be made from an economic perspective. /nWe end our paper with the “SWOT” analysis of a hypothetical surrogacy market in Spain by calculating an estimated price, using the US as a reference, and the degree of acceptance it would have, based on the results of random surveys.

Payment methods have been proven to affect spending behavior. More precisely, when/nindividuals use credit cards tend to overspend and to underestimate their past expenses. However, there is little research about the role that the additional services provided by financial institution have in shaping consumption patterns. This paper analyze how one of these services –the text message that banks send to their clients each time they make a payment using a credit card– affects spending control. A review of the previous literature is considered, and an experiment is hold to show support for the proposed theoretical framework. Our findings suggest that the information stated in these SMS are a source of variance in the overall expenses.

This thesis provides empirical evidence on how gender stereotypes affect Catalan students’ career choice. In contrast with the existing literature we create a variable that isolates the effect of gender stereotypes and we measure its significance through regression analysis. Controls for other determinants of career choice are taken into account. We find that although women appear to be more stereotyped than men, gender stereotypes only play a significant role in men’s career choice decision.

Recent improvements in techniques for analysis and usage of Big Data allow us to extract key conclusions from a vast amount of data. Applying this knowledge in the business world has proven to be beneficial in some cases for company performance indicators and profitability, while being a waste of resources in others. In this study we analyse a sample of 182 start-up companies in Catalonia by classifying them into three company types based on their business model and dependence on what we define as Big Data Techniques. We present the situation of this businesses by analysing the characteristics of each of the three company types. A final section concludes with our results and their mplications, as well as flaws and further research possibilities.

A rereading of Adam Smith and his prevailing interpretations

This paper wants to critically analyse key aspects of Smith’s thought in order to show that the common view that he is a conservative author and a dogmatic proposer of laissez-faire policies is not correctly based. As Muller has claimed, many of those who regard Adam Smith as “a patron saint” often fail to think in the way he did because they are quite satisfied with what he thought (1993: 197). To try to comprehend the root of Smith’s ideas has been the main objective of this paper. To understand the former is key when contemporizing his thought. A Smithian analysis of society has to apply Smith’s method of thought to our contemporary world. In section 1, I argue that as markets and institutions have changed since Smith’s time, to apply his recommendations directly to our days is misleading. In fact, if applied nowadays, they will generally lead to different outcomes. By carrying out the study of his method of thought I aim to show that Smith’s legacy cannot be the Utilitarian school and that more appropriate followers of his work are authors such as Amartya Sen, Arthur Pigou or Karl Marx. In section 2, I propose Sen as a more adequate follower of Smith since he uses the concept of sympathy in his economic analysis to show that our functions of welfare are not only influenced by our individual well-being. In section 3, I propose Pigou as an adequate follower of Smith since he uses the concept of justified state intervention –in sectors that benefit the whole of society but that the individuals would not want to privately invest in– to elaborate the concept of externality so as to show that government has to set up taxes to privately internalize the public damage. In section 4, I support that Marx’s concept of alienation was very influenced by Smith. All in all, this paper challenges the common assumption that Smith was a proto-libertarian through an indepth contextualization of Smith’s work.

In this paper we study recent developments in the approximation of the spread option pricing. As the Kirk’s Approximation is extremely flawed in the cases when the correlation is very high, we explore a recent development that allows approximating with simplicity and accuracy the option price. To assess the goodness of fit of the new method, we increase dramatically the number of simulations and scenarios to test the new method and compare it with the original Kirk’s formula. The simulations confirmed that the Modified Kirk’s Approximation method is extremely accurate, improving Kirk’s approach for two-asset spread options.

Rules of thumb, deviations from the standard objective functions, or explicit cognitive
bounds have been introduced in Industrial Organization to tackle irrationality. At the
same time, a considerable literature has been extending level-k since Nagel (1995), but
little has been done on its application outside experimental settings. To address this we
define a model of boundedly rationality and we apply it to a Cournot competition game,
finding that the accuracy of anticipation and the distribution of level 0 players’ action
play a critical role in explaining which firms become larger in dynamic settings.

Large companies are starting to treat automation as a high-priority initiative to be implemented during the upcoming years. Yet, while great strides have been made in applying workplace technologies, it is argued that small businesses face more difficulties than big firms when it comes to a change in their operating system, as well as to exploit the returns to scale. This paper aims to demonstrate that Small and Medium Enterprises can also benefit from automation. Using Visual Basic for Applications, we created a program to automate certain tasks of an existent firm. In this way, we provide evidence that smaller firms could take advantage of a simple and feasible automation of processes.

This paper performs an analysis of sigma and beta convergence for Spanish regions during the period 1860-2010 using different spatial units and time intervals. Growth regressions are run unconditionally using a Generalised Least Squares estimator and also conditionally by using a fixed effects estimator and a panel data two-step Generalised Method of Moments estimator. My results confirm the existence of conditional beta convergence for Spanish regions over the whole studied period; however, different time partitions for growth regressions show the convergence parameter has not remained constant at all throughout different periods. I conclude that, although the neoclassical growth model with endogenous savings provides a satisfactory picture of convergence in Spain if the whole period 1860-2010 is considered, other forces apart from diminishing returns to capital accumulation also play a role.

During the last years the football industry has experienced a huge unexpected increase in its economic activities involving changes in market prices and transfer fees. While the national economies throughout the world were suffering the ravages that the 2008 financial crisis caused, the football industry seems to not be affected and act in parallel. This tendency has not been left apart by some economists who have warned about the formation of a possible self-perpetuated increase in the value of the clubs and players and therefore an economic bubble in the football industry. Nevertheless, in this paper we want to try to give a firm, but not definite response to this phenomenon and somehow answer to these speculations, as there are no economic studies giving response to this issue. We will make a profound analysis based on the market value record of the football most reliable football industry database, which is Transfermarkt (www.transfermarkt.com).

After a period of economic expansion, lasting from 2000 to 2007, where both Spanish GDP and interregional trade volume were growing at high rates, an economic contraction occurred affecting the majority of countries in the world, including Spain. This led to the greatest and quickest trade collapse ever seen. This paper analyzes data for 16 Spanish industry sectors for 14 years (2000-2013), comparing the effects of the crisis on trade within Spain with the effects observed by other papers at a global scale. The results of this study confirm the existence of a Spanish internal trade collapse, showing a 23% drop in interregional trade, exceeding the fall in Spanish GDP, -3.6%, by a factor of 6. These findings are supported by the estimation of a Gravity Model of trade in order to determine which factors influence trade between Comunidades Autónomas. We also examine the alleged causes of the Great Trade Collapse and their applicability to the Spanish case. All in all, the reduction in consumption, investment and credit concession to private sector are the main determinants of the Spanish Trade Collapse.

In this work, Monte Carlo simulations coded in Python are used to estimate short-term floating Asian options. Afterwards, variance reduction techniques are used on the Monte Carlo simulations to reduce their variance and to compare those estimates to the first and second approximation formulas by Alòs and León. Finally, an analysis of the volatility of each technique and the errors of both approximation formulas is performed.

We are made to believe the stock market is a good measure for the actual economy. However, while the S&P 500 has been strong for almost 40 years, U.S. GDP growth has slowed down considerably. This paper aims to conduct an analysis of the established econometric relationship between these economic concepts and delve into its joint dynamics and linear interdependencies. To do this we use a VAR model to test Granger causality and analyze the Impulse Response Functions based on a quarter time series data for the year 1947 to 2018. While the S&P 500 cannot be predicted in our study, we can show a positive historical relation between current U.S. GDP growth and past S&P 500 growth when comparing our results with an AR model. As such, our analysis aims to utilize S&P 500 as a short-run leading indicator to forecast U.S. GDP behavior.

The present paper tries to fill the gap of a missing up-to-date literature review of the most vanguard Behavioral New Keynesian (BNK) macroeconomic models. BNK models differ from traditional New Keynesian (NK) models insofar, as they challenge the notion of fully rational expectations of economic agents and introduce some kind of bounded rationality in the model. The models reviewed include Adaptive Learning by De Grauwe (2012), Level K by Mauersberger et al. (2020) and Sparse Dynamics by Gabaix (2019). The paper especially highlights different implications for monetary policy by critically comparing the heterodox BNK models to a standard version of the mainstream NK model. In doing so, it detects so far unidentified links and gaps in the current literature.

COVID-19 has brought an unprecedented crisis full of uncertainty, and no handbook exists to present institutional bodies the best measures to mitigate it. This paper’s main objective is to analyze the specific measures that public institutions are to implement to prevent the aggravation of this recession, which has been caused by an exogenous shock.
Being aware of the novelty this crisis presents, this paper is not only based on what analysts argue, but also on the lessons that the world has learned from precedent economic crises, as well as the behavioral response individuals might undertake.

The aim of this Bachelor’s Degree Final Project is to cover the house price appreciation to rise the awareness of the “laissez-faire” in the housing market on the social welfare: how it can be an origin of economic, spatial and social inequality; and, in last instance, the vulnerability of the right to shelter, because of affordability problems of low-income households. In the last decades, there has been a commodification of the housing market. Liberalization of the credit market, globalization and cuts on public housing spending of governments, has shaped the perfect scenario for a long upward trend of house prices and in which capital accumulation has created a clear dichotomy based on asset ownership. The severity of the issue has called the public authorities to take measures to tackle the Global Urban Housing Affordability Crisis.
The research used has based on a long list of academic papers. However, Piketty’s work in the ‘Capital in the 21st Century’ and the paper of Adkins et al. (2019) from The University of Sydney, in which it is discussed the growing inequality and it is outlined a new asset-based class taxonomy, have defined the grounds, the development and the scope of this research. In regards to the structure of the contents, two parts can be differentiated. On the one hand, a theoretical part regarding the evolution of house prices and the inequalities resulted from higher growth rates of house prices than income growth rates. On the other hand, an assessment of the housing market of the
city of Barcelona is conducted in order to have a close picture of the impact of the house price appreciation on the city and its inhabitants. The reasons why the city of Barcelona has been chosen as a case of study are: European major cities have experienced stronger house price appreciation, the City Council of Barcelona has a large and accurate database of the housing market of the city and, personally, we have experienced its impact in the first person.

In 1995 the reward for a victory was increased from two to three points in most European football leagues, in order to encourage teams to adopt attacking strategies. This setting provides an interesting experiment for studying the effects of a reward increase in tournaments. In this paper we evaluate if the objectives of the principal with the implementation of the three-point rule were achieved. Focusing on recent seasons of the Spanish football league, we contrast our results with previous literature on the subject which analysed earlier seasons. We identify that many variables behave differently nowadays, up to the point that average shots have doubled and average fouls per season seem to have reached a steady state. By running statistical tests and regressions, we conclude that team budgets are the most determining factor in today’s playing performance. We also find that strategies adjust smoothly throughout seasons, showing that the role of the incentive change has been downplayed.

We describe the legal framework for public procurement in Spain. Operating with a data set of contracts, we observe notorious spikes near the thresholds, which adjust rapidly to legislative modifications. We use firm-level data to produce a measure of firm-productivity. Additionally, we merge both data sets and obtain the following findings. First, winning firms are more productive than the average firm. Second, the open procedure might not lead to contracting with more productive firms - we discuss some possible explanations for this phenomenon-. Third, negotiated procedures increase the likelihood of allocating the contract to a company from the same territorial area as the contracting authority.

The quality of geolocation services and the amount of publicly available data on the internet have increased substantially in the last decade. This paper studies the Barcelonese rental real estate market by exploiting both geolocation services and user-generated public data. This allows for the creation of a dataset which is later analysed using kernel smoothing methods. The key ndings are that (i) rent prices are approximately log-normally distributed, that (ii) rent prices are lower in areas further away from the city centre, and that (iii) the previous point has to be complemented with a geospatial analysis that accounts for spatial heterogeneity.

The Palestinian economy is now devastated, although having an excellent geographic location and ideal sociodemographic characteristics. The deterioration and dismembering of its productive capacity has been unprecedented. The last 100 years of permanent economic decline have resulted in general impoverishment, deformation of its sectorial structure and record unemployment. A general overview of its modern economic history in comparison to Israel and other Middle Eastern economies offers a unique perspective to assess the dimensions, causes and consequences of this great failure.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the effects of a money-financed government spending stimulus implemented in the core economies of the eurozone, to test both its efficiency and its distribution between the core and the periphery. We compare these effects to the ones generated by an equivalent government spending shock under a more usual debt-financing regime. The ultimate goal of the analysis is to assess the desirability of ‘helicopter money’ in the eurozone as an instrument to stimulate the economy.

The use of Cause-Related Marketing (CRM) by corporations is on the increase. However, there is a growing concern that the objectives of corporations’ and NGOs’ differ. We argue that this may influence how consumers’ perceive the social cause. We tested these predictions in a study in the context of a cancer awareness campaign. We develop recommendations on how CRM campaigns can avoid these problematic consequences.

In this project, we examine patient gender discrimination on both the probabilities of visiting the cardiologist and being diagnosed with a heart disease. Using micro data from the 2016 and 2017 Catalan Health Survey (ESCA), and two Probit estimations for the equations drawn for each case of study, we are able to reach the conclusion that there is gender discrimination both on access and diagnosis for patients with high prospects of suffering heart issues. Our findings suggest that women have lower probabilities of visiting the cardiologist and being diagnosed with a heart disease. Even after adding controls for risk factors, other significant socioeconomic variables, and using two different sub-samples, these results preserve their validity and significance intact.

The recent entry of renewable energies in the Spanish electricity market has been controversial, since it has caused some market variations, such as changes in price volatility. Some specialists agree that cleaner energies sources increase price volatility, whereas others disagree. The aim of this project is to understand how the transition towards renewable energies has affected the market and the electricity prices in the last years in Spain, and how can it affect the future of this sector. Through an econometrical model we have observed that price volatility is in fact, directly affected by this energetic transition. Moreover, the data reveals that wind energy generation has a positive regressive relationship with electric price volatility whereas solar energy works in the opposite way, having a negative regressive relation with price volatility.

This paper empirically analyses the effect of low-skilled immigration on the share of young adults (between 25 and 34 years old) with tertiary education in Spain during the first decade of the 21st century. During this period Spain experienced an unprecedented immigration wave, going from less than one million immigrants in 2000 to almost six million in 2010. Using data from 2000 and 2010 at provincial level, the obtained results suggest a negative
effect of low-skilled new-comers on the share of people who obtain high levels of human capital, which is mainly explained by women’s outcomes.

The Black Scholes formula is one of the most used to determine what is the fair value of options. However, there are some assumptions such as that volatility is constant that are not met in the real market. Stochastic volatility models can be used as an extension of Black Scholes where volatility is a random process. The aim of this project is to use the SABR model which is a stochastic volatility model to attempt to capture the volatility smile. We study classical problems related to the SABR model such as simulation. Finally, we study its implementation by the financial industry and its main limitations.

This article investigates the extent to which the wholesale electricity market in Spain has price asymmetries in the 2017-2020 period. This phenomenon, known as the Rockets and Feathers effect since its first application in gasoline markets by Bacon in 1991, is analyzed following two different empirical approaches, the non-linear regression used in that article and the lagged differences broadly applied in recent Rockets and Feathers literature like Remer 2015. Besides, this second methodology is divided into different variants depending on the number of lags, and the controls that are taken into account. The study includes data from the main cost fluctuation sources in the period for the technologies involved in overall production, and no other papers have discussed this hypothesis in the Spanish daily electricity case to the best of our knowledge. Our estimations conclude that no asymmetric
pricing can be proved significantly through any of the two analyses.

The Black-Scholes model fails to reproduce some empirical properties of volatility, from real market data, which means that the model may not be adequate to price certain options. Hence, the financial industry and academia focused on developing alternative models and methods for pricing. One of these models is the SABR model, a stochastic volatility model commonly used in nowadays financial industry. In this project, we aim to analyze and discuss the SABR model from both the theoretical and the practical point of view by motivating the usage of this model and showing how it can be applied in different aspects of the financial practice such as calibration, simulation and numerical methods to obtain implied volatilities. Throughout this analysis and discussion, we also aim to give some insights regarding what practitioners do, to give some sense of the applicability of the model and the methods in the real world.

In a changing environment such as the current one, in which society is increasingly aware of the environment, while the fossil fuel energy market weakens, it is necessary to move towards an ecological transition in which solar energy plays a fundamental role. For this reason, in this study, not only a quantitative but also a qualitative analysis of the energy market and the installation of solar panels in Barcelona will be carried out - taking into account all its aspects: costs, public and private funding, taxation and subsidies, geographical location, among others - to be able to finally conclude that carrying out this type of project in Barcelona has notable advantages over carrying it out in other places.

This paper aims to measure which could be the effects of the Barcelona – Pyrenees application to host the 2030 Winter Olympics in a particular and singular place as it is Val d’Aran, that differs from the rest of the Pyrenees in a sociocultural and economic sense. To perform this paper the data that the candidacy has presented will be essential, such as ticket revenues, investments, paybacks and others; and so are the trips to Val d’Aran to be in touch with the local environment and to meet firsthand the players involved in this project. A short-run and medium-run analysis will be done, considering the data of the effects that other Olympic Games have led to and applying this data to Val d’Aran; also calculating increases in employment and revenues using estimations.

After the 2016 UK referendum on EU membership, in which the topic of immigration played a prominent role, net EU migration to the UK dramatically fell. This study aims to exploit this change in migration patterns and empirically analyse the impact of EU immigration on the wages and hours of work of natives in the UK in the period after the referendum. Results indicate that EU immigration has a positive effect on average native wages (and thus an outflow of EU workers after 2016 could have led to a wage decrease), although this effect is unevenly distributed across native skill groups. While those at the upper part of the wage distribution are positively impacted by EU immigration, its effect on the outcomes of low-skill natives is negative, which, given the educational composition of EU immigrants, points to the persistence of considerable downgrading upon arrival.

In this project, several steps are taken to analyse and cluster the financial markets’ data. The first part is focused on a brief description of the statistical properties of the time series.
Later on, the clustering with the k-Means method, using the rolling four statistical moments, is firstly focused on the NASDAQ index, then to extend the model, several financial products are selected. Moreover, the creation of a strategy based on clusters has been proposed in order to get profit, which has been successful.
Finally, ARCH models backed by statistical tests and criteria, using standardized returns, are used to capture the volatility clustering and forecast it, and the GARCH (1,1) was selected among all since it has the most forecast accuracy.

Climate change and the possible tools to mitigate it have been at the center of public debate for the last decades. One of the most interesting instruments is the carbon tax. Besides its effectiveness, the distributional impact plays an important role when considering introducing this tool. In this study, we do a literature review about the effects of the carbon tax and analyze the potential distributional impact of introducing a carbon tax of 70€ for the ton of CO2 used in the private transportation sector in Barcelona. The study approaches the implementation of a tax on gasoline expenditure, instead of a vehicle tax or a tax on emissions. Using a simplified sample of 1,068 observations of Barcelona households, with different incomes and gasoline expenditures and elasticities depending on their income deciles, we find that the tax is regressive. However, compared with the current environmental policies applied in the capital of Catalonia and the tools to reduce the regressivity of this policy, a carbon tax as proposed on fuel, would end up increasing the progressivity of public intervention in Barcelona.

Blockchain is becoming an important technology of this decade pushing humanity towards the Industrial Revolution 4.0. The last few years have shown that companies have seen significant advantages in the new technology not only for the finance industry, but also for use in various areas of business. This study aims to fill a gap in the research of the types of companies that need to introduce new technology in order to identify an idea of those companies that benefit from changing current business processes in the future. The authors of the current paper studied the TOP-2000 companies from the USA and China as the main competing countries seeking to implement blockchain. The study examined the industries and use cases of blockchain in order to answer the research question: what are the key characteristics of companies that need to change their business model and implement blockchain technology in order to be stable and profitable in the near future? While the types of companies were studied using clustering models, the assumption that only a part of the industry needs to implement a certain type of use cases has been tested within the framework of classification models. The results showed that companies from the financial, entertainment and IT industries need to take a closer look at their competitors and make a possible decision to implement blockchain in their companies in order not to become lagging behind among competitors in the nearest future. Thesis format: academic (empirical).
