In this article we compare the images used by Dante Alighieri with the ones used by her/n“heretical” contemporary Marguerite Porete (†1310) for expressing the final contact-vision of God. We will analyze the use of the images of light, the gradual ascent and the knot in both/nauthors, putting it into the context of the theological doctrines about the visio Dei. This will allow us, in the first place, to claim a shared cultural background based in the conception of God as a visible being and, in the second, to discuss the historical implications of/nheteredoxy/ortodoxy in the Commedia and the Mirouer.

Analisi
The starting point is the understanding of the dramatic text as literary text, thus it could be analyzed with methodologies coming from literary studies: the dramatic text is literature, creation of language and it can be read and interpreted as such. Of course I acknowledge the text’s performativity, implicit in its characteristic and functions. The analysis of Enrico IV (1921) constitutes a practical application of the proposal and the opportunity for opening the discussion to new perspectives.

This paper aims to establish a link between genre and gender through the study of the cronotope in two narrative pieces by Copi (1939-1987). Following a comparative methodology and supported by concepts from literary theory, queer theory and poststructuralist thought, this article will analyze, first, the means by which Copi wishes to go beyond the rules of literary genre and gender; second, the objects which are reappropriated according to nonheteronormative codes; and, finally, the way in which the enlargement of time in the fiction of the Argentinean writer benefits a conception of gender that is primarily prosthetic.

This article is divided into three sections: the first focuses on some analogies and historical parallels that shape digital technology, the hypertext and interactivity, such as the book and the printing press. My aim in the second section is to map the development of the creation of digital environments for archives, corpus, libraries and scholarly editions of medieval and Golden Age literary works by the Spanish-speaking academic community from 1986 to 2005. Of course my account cannot be comprehensive, but it aims to be representative, nevertheless. The last section traces the evolution of the relationship between the literary studies and information technology from 2006 until 2013 when the first official Digital Humanities conference took place in Spain.

This article aims to introduce the Spanish reader to the current debates in the English speaking community of Digital Humanities. Rather than trying to define the discipline in absolute terms the approach is broadly diachronic though some principles as interdisciplinarity and modeling, values as openness and practices as data mining and collaboracion are emphasized.

Multiculturalisme -- Aspectes socials

Llengua oral i sintaxi

The Kel Tadrart Tuareg, desert pastoralists from the Tadrart Acacus massif in Libya, were the subject of an ethnoarchaeological research carried out between 2003 and 2011. By means of a multi-pronged approach, a variety of topics were explored, ranging from the Kel Tadrart interactions with natural resources and the settlement pattern, to the layout of campsites and the processes of sites’ abandonment. The study of the Kel Tadrart adaptation to an arid environment and patchy resources, along with the recording of material evidence, holds direct relevance to archaeologists, anthropologists, and stakeholders interested in sustainable dryland pastoralism.
The author acknowledges the support of ‘The Italian Archaeological Mission in the Sahara’ from Sapienza, University of Rome, which funded this research.

The article aims to take up again the historiographical debate/nabout the impact of the Paris Commune in 1871 Spain. Researching beyond/nthe well-known issue of Communard refugees in revolutionary Spain, the article/nargues that local experiences of social and political conflict were key to the/nSpanish reception of the Paris revolution. The May 1871 Spanish parliamentary/nlively debates on the Commune and the IWMA (or AIT) arose from a very specific/nlocal episode of workers’ protest and popular political mobilization. The/nepisode took place in Barcelona during the spring of 1871, while the Paris Commune/nwas at its height. A challenging industrial strike that paralyzed Spain’s/nlargest cotton mill, the Batlló factory, and an unprecedented electoral victory by/nthe Republican left-wing opposition of the Partido Republicano Democrático/nFederal (PRDF), overlapped then in Barcelona. The Commune, the article goes,/ncontributed to merge both facts into one shared political experience. Barcelona/nruling classes used the Commune transeuropean shadow to justify a simultaneous/nand hardline policy against trade unionists and Republicans. The Spanish/nGovernment final offensive against both local collective actors followed Versailles/nfinal attack on Communard Paris, exactly during the same days of late/nMay 1871.

The interpretative power of quantitative intra-site spatial analysis has long been recognised by archaeologists. On the contrary, very few ethnoarchaeological works have engaged with the statistical analysis of intra-site pattern of artefacts and ecofacts. Nonetheless, ethnoarchaeology is uniquely placed to guide and assist in the identification of sound techniques and in the development of the methodology of analysis. The possibility to directly connect the distribution of the proxies under study with the activity that generated such distribution, provide the means of fine-tuning the tools we use for identifying these patterns in the archaeological record. As a consequence, archaeological methodology and interpretation both benefit from the application of improved methodologies. In this paper we review some of the most common techniques used to analyse activity areas and we provide examples of the application of such techniques to ethnoarchaeological contexts. The aim is to assess how archaeology can benefit from the intra-site spatial analysis of ethnoarchaeological contexts.

The identification of fuel-related practices in archaeological contexts is almost always associated with the identification of fire-related structures. Charcoal analysis is the standard method of identifying wood use in the past; however, in many circumstances wood was not the primary source of fuel. In arid and semi-arid environments alternative fuels such as dung, chaff and straw and, in general, plant processing by-products were predominant. The study of these types of fuel often necessitates the application of multi-proxy analyses, involving botanical micro-remains and geochemistry. This paper presents the results of an integrated analysis of phytoliths and chemical elements of samples collected in a modern ethnographic context, a domestic compound, in North Gujarat, India. Alternative fuels have been and are still very important in this area due to the scarcity of wood and the recent ban on cutting trees imposed by the government. Within the house studied, three fireplaces were present where different types of activities were performed selectively. The differential use of fuels in the three fireplaces is highlighted by the results of descriptive and multivariate statistics. However, the opposite geochemical signals that the fireplaces produced, when they should have been similar, would be difficult to interpret in an archaeological context where the practices that had produced such signals are unknown. The combination of phytoliths and geochemistry, coupled with the ethnographic information on the activity, can help us to construct better models to help interpret the archaeological record.

Geostatistical modelling of chemical residues on archaeological floors in the presence of barriers

Non-euclidean geostatistics

Spatial heterogeneity

Housefloors
Maps representing the distribution of chemical residues over anthropogenic floors are the main diagnostic tools used by archaeologists for addressing the identification of geochemical signatures of past actions. Geostatistics allows producing these maps from a sample of locations by modelling the spatial autocorrelation structure of these kind of phenomena. However, the homogeneity of the prediction regions is a strong assumption in the model. The presence of barriers, such as the inner walls of domestic units, introduces discontinuities in prediction areas. In this paper, we investigate how to incorporate information of a geographical nature into the process of geostatistical prediction. We propose the use of cost-based distances to quantify the correlation between locations, a solution which has proved to be a practical alternative approach for archaeological intrasite analysis. The cost-based approach produces more reliable results avoiding the unrealistic assumption of the homogeneity of the study area. As a working example, a case study of the distribution of two specific chemical signatures in domestic floors is presented within a controlled ethnographical context in Northern Gujarat (India). On a broad disciplinary scale, the benefits of using our approach include improved estimates in regions with complex geometry and lower uncertainty in the kriging predictions.

This essay proposes a reading of Karl Philipp Moritz's Anton Reiser, focusing on the two component elements of its fundamental “Symbolik” (this is the standard translation of Goethe's “das Symbolische” as used by Walter Benjamin when discussing works of art): material content and truth content. The first is approached via commentary, the second through an interrogation of the novel's central enigma. Regarding material content, the essay discusses three quotations from Moritz selected by Benjamin in one of his radio ‘Hörmodelle’. I argue that these instantiate the novel's ‘Symbolik’, and I call this the ‘phantasmagorical image of the small’. It manifests itself in the recurring motif of adventure and wandering, in the way the novel depicts the role of the imagination, and in the form in which it addresses the question of Reiser's destiny. Regarding truth content, I concentrate first on a small but crucial detail. Reiser identifies with Werther in all ways except one, radically excluding the possibility of a love encounter. Anton Reiser’s enigma of the small is condensed in a phantasmagoria without any love-object. Second, I delineate the novel's denouement in order to show that Anton Reiser offers, avant la lettre, a perspective on modernity alternative to that of the classic Bildungsroman.

Modern colonialism, eurocentrism and historical archaeology: some engendered thoughts

In this article, we would like to share some thoughts related to the values and principles implemented by archaeologists when bringing ‘the other’ into focus. We situate our reflections within the archaeology of modern colonialism, and revisit some aspects related to one of the most vibrant issues in historical archaeology: Eurocentrism. It is our understanding that ‘de-Eurocentring’ the discipline not only requires introducing the disenfranchised as new agents, but also questioning the most profound logics by which narratives of the past have been written. We focus on the idea of history as change, and on the notion of social continuity from a feminist standpoint. We have noticed that certain accounts of colonial situations, even those with the opposite intention, may project the prevailing Western male way of being while trying to explain past social and personal dynamics, thus blurring ontological diversity and unwittingly reinforcing the Eurocentrism we are trying to avoid.
The aim of this paper is to extend our knowledge of the events that affected much of Catalonia in the last week of July 1909. The work is based on primary sources, from newspapers to ego documents, as well as secondary material, covering most of the historiographical production on those events. The method is empirical. The argument starts with the «hispanorifeño » conflict that caused a general strike against the war which affected much of Catalonia. In some areas, especially in Barcelona, the strike became an anticlerical movement. This movement also had an important republican component, which has been generally underestimated by historians. Finally, we have tried to explain why the strike did not spread to the rest of Spain, and show the magnitude of the repression that followed the end of the general strike against the war, and the anti-clerical and republican movements. The conclusions summarize my point of view of the July 1909 Revolution, considered by many historians a fundamental reference of Spanish political history of the twentieth century.

Pich i Mitjana, Josep, 1967-
Nacionalisme -- Catalunya -- 1886-1931
This article will explore the beginnings of political Catalanism through the appearance,
evolution and crisis of federal Catalanism. The movement’s main aim was to
recover self-government and motivate the modernisation of Catalonia. The article
covers the period from the first years of Restoration period, with the publication of Diari Català (the first modern political-literary newspaper written in Catalan),
to the crisis of the first Catalanist political association, Centre Català. It was led
by Valentí Almirall, who encouraged the first Catalanist public act, the Memorial
de Greuges. But the idea of transforming Catalanism into a true political alternative
failed when the Centre Català split in 1887. The federal Catalanist idea was
too conservative for most Catalan republicans yet too radical for the regionalists and
for the Catalanist conservatives. In short, the politicization of Catalanism after the
1898 crisis cannot be understood without understanding federal Catalanist activity
and the split of Catalanists from the Centre Català.

The Ifni-Sahara War (1957-1958) was the last Spanish colonial conflict. Nonetheless, during the months preceding the outbreak of hostilities a series of events took part, showing the possibility that General Franco’s regime may end involved in a military clash with the Moroccan guerrillas named Ejército de Liberación (EL). In this article we aim to analyse the Spanish policy from the Moroccan independence since the outbreak of the hostilities, as well as the first armed clashes between Spanish and French troops and the Moroccan irredentists.

Francoist foreign policy discourse throughout the 1941-1945 period highlighted the ideological
differences with communism, to the point of demonizing the Soviet Union’ regime in order to picture
it as a world menace to Eastern Europe civilization. Mundo: Revista de Política Exterior y Economía,
with an editorial staff which featured a large number of senior Francoist officials and personalities,
is an illustrative example of this discourse. In this article we attempt to set out the basic lines of
arguments of this discourse, which can be extrapolated to the overall stance of regime. Through
an analysis of its editorials published between 1941 and 1945. We also focus on studying whether
the theses defended in the articles analyzed witnessed significant changes throughout the period
examined.
The analysis of the texts is supplemented by a study of this weekly’s staff and the changes the
publication saw over the period in question.

Archaeology provides few examples of large-scale fisheries at the frontier between catching and farming of fish. We analysed the spatial organization of earthen embankments to infer the functioning of a landscape-level pre-Columbian Amazonian fishery that was based on capture of out-migrating fish after reproduction in seasonal floodplains. Long earthen weirs cross floodplains. We showed that weirs bear successive V-shaped features (termed ‘Vs’ for the sake of brevity) pointing downstream for outflowing water and that ponds are associated with Vs, the V often forming the pond’s downstream wall. How Vs channelled fish into ponds cannot be explained simply by hydraulics, because Vs surprisingly lack fishways, where, in other weirs, traps capture fish borne by current flowing through these gaps. We suggest that when water was still high enough to flow over the weir, out-migrating bottom-hugging fish followed current downstream into Vs. Finding deeper, slower-moving water, they remained. Receding water further concentrated fish in ponds. The pond served as the trap, and this function shaped pond design. Weir-fishing and pond-fishing are both practiced in African floodplains today. In combining the two, this pre-Columbian system appears unique in the world.

River logjams cause frequent large-scale forest die-off events in southwestern Amazonia
Lombardo, Umberto
This paper investigates the dynamics of logjam-induced floods and alluvial deposition in the Bolivian Amazon and the effects these have on forest disturbance and recovery cycles. It expands on previous work by Gullison et al. (1996) who reported a case of catastrophic floods triggered by logjams in the Chimane Forest in the Bolivian Amazon. No further studies have followed up on this observation and no research has been published on the effects of large wood in tropical lowland rivers. The study is based on the analysis of a time series of Landsat imagery (1984–2016) and field evidence. Results show that logjam-induced floods are a major driver of forest disturbance along the Andean piedmont in the Bolivian Amazon. New logjams form on an almost yearly basis, always further upriver, until an avulsion takes place. Logjam-induced floods are characterized here by the sudden deposition of a thick sand layer and the death of forest in a V-shaped area. The Bolivian Amazon offers a unique opportunity for further research on how large wood affects river behavior in lowland tropical settings and how large and frequent forest disturbance events resulting from river logjams affect forest biodiversity and community successions.

The present study reconstructs Holocene fluvial dynamics in the southern Amazonian foreland basin through the analysis of 36 stratigraphic profiles taken along a 300 km long transect across the Llanos de Moxos (LM), in the Bolivian Amazon. Based on 50 radiocarbon ages from paleosols intercalated with fluvial sediments, the most important changes in floodplain dynamics on a millennial scale are reconstructed and the links between pre-Columbian cultural processes and environmental change in the region explored. Results show that the frequency of river avulsions and crevasses, as inferred from the number and age of the cored paleosols, is stable from 8k cal. yrs BP to 4k cal. yrs BP and increases significantly from 4k to 2k cal. yrs BP, following the strengthening of el Niño/la Niña cycle and an increase in average precipitation. Fluvial activity then decreases and reaches its minimum after 2k cal BP. A comparison between the stratigraphic record and the archaeological record shows a match between periods of landscape stability in SW Amazonia (low river activity) and periods of pre-Columbian human occupation. The first Amazonians lived in the LM until 4k yrs. BP, when an abrupt increase in the frequency of river avulsions and crevasses forced the abandonment of the region. After two thousand years of archaeological hiatus, which matches the period of highest river activity in the region, agriculturists reoccupied the Bolivian Amazon.

This paper focuses on the rhetoric of kinship in the early biography of the founder of the Persian
Empire included in Herodotus’ Histories, that is, within the Herodotean account of Cyrus II of Persia’s birth,
childhood and accession to the throne. Its aim is to demonstrate the influence exerted by family ties among
characters over the construction of Cyrus’ identity. To this end, the paper examines the speech acts through
which characters articulate their family relationships, as well as the clarifications and interpretations made in this
respect by the narrator. Results show that there is not a unique identity of Cyrus, but three of them (prince, slave
and conqueror) that combine to create a prime example of a hero archetype applicable to men who are born to
rule but face great difficulties caused by relatives or people around them.

Based on archaeological evidence from Kutch-Saurashtra (N Gujarat, NW India), we use agent-based modelling (ABM) to explore the persistence of hunter-gatherer (HG) groups in semi-arid environments in the mid and late Holocene. Agents interact within a realistic semi-arid environment dominated by the monsoon. Precipitation trends are modelled from instrumental records (1871–2008) calibrated with existing models for the Asian monsoon in the Holocene (c. 12 ka–present). Experiments aim at exploring dependencies between population dynamics and climate-driven environmental change (in terms of resource availability) for precipitation patterns at the local, regional and continental scales. Resources are distributed across a simplified ground model. Average yearly precipitation (AYP, i.e. mean) and variance in yearly precipitation (VYP, i.e. standard deviation) are the main parameters affecting resource availability in the simulations. We assess the effects of environmental change on HG populations at different timescales: (1) patterns of seasonal (inter-annual) resource availability, (2) effects of changes in mean precipitation trends over the long (Pleistocene–Holocene) and the mid (Holocene, millennial) periods, and (3) effects of intra-annual precipitation variability, i.e. changes in standard deviation from mean precipitation trends over the short period (annual to decadal). Simulations show that (1) strong seasonality is coherent with the persistence of HG populations in India, independently of the geographical scale of the precipitation models, (2) changes in AYP over the mid period (Holocene) are not sufficient to explain the disappearance of HG populations in Kutch-Saurashtra (K-S) 4 ka and (3) precipitation variability (VYP) over the short period (annual to decadal) is the main parameter affecting population performance and overall ecosystem dynamics. To date, sufficiently refined palaeoclimatic records do not exist for the study area, but higher VYP values 4 ka do not exclude the possibility that other factors may have driven the disappearance of HG populations in Kutch-Saurashtra.

This paper discusses the ongoing ethnoarchaeological research carried out in Yamana shell middens of Tierra del Fuego. Ethnoarchaeology is used in this research as a tool to improve the archaeological methodology by testing it against anthropological, ethnographical and ethnological sources for achieving more accurate reconstructions of past societies. The ethnographical/ethnological information also is coupled with an experimental approach devised to understand physical and social processes, such as site formation processes and resource use and management. Specifically, this experimental approach was applied to the archaeological sites Túnel VII and Lanashuaia I (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina).

Rainfed cultivation in drylands, especially arid and hyper-arid lands, is often considered to play a minor role in human livelihood. Understanding the long-term development of this practice will augment knowledge of past land use strategies to inform models of land cover and climate change. Drawing upon the results of an ethnoarchaeological study, this paper presents a review of non-irrigated agricultural practices in the absence of anthropogenic water-harvesting structures, in arid and hyper-arid lands of North Africa. A proposal on how to identify the presence and extent of these practices in the past in world’s drylands at large is ultimately presented.

Necromancia

The Roles of the state and social licence to operate? Lessons from nuclear waste management in Finland, France, and Sweden

The concept of social licence to operate (SLO) is an increasingly popular tool for companies to manage their relations with the local communities. SLO is very seldom used in the nuclear sector, which has nevertheless applied similar approaches, under notions such as partnership and participatory governance. This article explores the specific challenges that the application of SLO faces in the nuclear waste management (NWM) sector, by applying an often-used SLO framework of Boutilier and Thomson to illustrative case studies concerning nuclear waste repository projects in Finland, France and Sweden. Among the specificities of this sector, the article focuses on the central roles of the state in the governance of a project designed as a local solution to a national, even a global problem, entailing extremely long-term challenges, in a context when the state has a vested interest in the project obtaining an SLO. The article suggests that state-related elements be added to the four key criteria of the Boutilier and Thomson framework, which consists of economic and socio-political legitimacy, and interactional and institutionalised trust. To account for the diversity of settings, such as the ‘hightrust’ contexts of Finland and Sweden and the French ‘society of mistrust’, further analysis and conceptual refinement are needed, especially concerning the multiple dimensions of trust and mistrust, the relationships between legal, political, and social licences, and the specific challenges of intergenerational justice in SLO work.
This work received financing from the Finnish Research Programme on Nuclear Waste Management (KYT2018).

Many societal and environmental changes occurred between the 2nd millennium BC and the middle of the 2nd millennium AD in western Africa. Key amongst these were changes in land use due to the spread and development of agricultural strategies, which may have had widespread consequences for the climate, hydrology, biodiversity, and ecosystem services of the region. Quantifcation of these land-use infuences and potential feedbacks between human and natural systems is controversial, however, in part because the archaeological and historical record is highly fragmented in time and space. To improve our understanding of how humans contributed to the development of African landscapes, we developed an atlas of landuse practices in western Africa for nine time-windows over the period 1800 BC–AD 1500. The maps are based on a broad synthesis of archaeological, archaeobotanical, archaeozoological, historical, linguistic, genetic, and ethnographic data, and present land use in 12 basic categories. The main diferences between categories is the relative reliance on, and variety of, domesticated plant and animal species utilized, and the energy invested in cultivating or keeping them. The maps highlight the irregular and frequently non-linear trajectory of land-use change in the prehistory of western Africa. Representing an original attempt to produce rigorous spatial synthesis from diverse sources, the atlas will be useful for a range of studies of human–environment interactions in the past, and highlight major spatial and temporal gaps in data that may guide future feld studies.

Gender, missions, and maintenance activities in the early modern globalization: Guam 1668–98

This article proposes that early modern globalization took shape through the global circulation of gender ideologies, sexual politics, engendered technologies, and engendered knowledge. It does so by exploring the early years of Jesuit missions in Guam (Mariana Islands) and describes mission policies as engendered sexual policies that fostered the emergence of a new sex/gender system within indigenous Chamorro society. These policies targeted, among others, the sphere of maintenance activities. This concept highlights the foregrounding nature of a set of routine everyday practices that are essential to social continuity. Guam offers an interesting case study to discuss how gender transformations were performed and implemented on the ground, and what they entailed for those who experienced them.

The objective of this paper is to focus on the Umwelt-Welt dichotomy by means of which Heidegger and Gehlen attempt to describe the grounds for the ontological difference between human and animal. Despite their profound differences, both Heidegger and Gehlen, due to their common belief in the ontological specificity of the human compared to the animal, assume as their own the classical metaphysical point of view according to which an appropriate definition of man’s essence can only be attained by excluding every element of animality from humanity. On the basis of these premises, I criticize this theoretical assumption as shared by Heidegger’s The Fundamental Concepts of Metaphysics: World, Finitude, Solitude (1929-1930) and Gehlen’s Man. His Nature and Place in the World (1940).

In this essay I aim to analyze the contribution of the Jesuits from Manila to the conquest and colonization of Mindanao throughout the 17th century. It was not exclusively a diplomatic and evangelizing contribution, but a political and military one. First, I will examine the Jesuits’ stand about the “just war” against the Muslim “pirates” – best known as “moros” – of the southern Philippines, where the Muslims had set up a spearhead that allowed them to besiege the Spanish domains in the archipelagos of the Visayas. Secondly, I will rethink the islands of Mindanao and Sulu as the southern borderline of the Philippines after the definitive loss of the options of conquest of the Moluccas. As a postscript, I will sustain that the outlying missions of the Society of Jesus in the East Indies (the Moluccas, Philippines, Mariana Islands, Carolines) cannot be understood independently from each other, but rather in a global context.

VIII-VI a.
This paper proposes an analysis of the relationship between bovines and humans through the lens of animal agency, using various artworks recovered from the site of Polizzello (western Sicily) dated between the 8th and the 6th centuries BCE. Specifically, we study a group of table amphorae decorated with bucrania, together with representations of these animals and hybrid beings painted on clay dishware. First, we will explain briefly the historical context and the artistic traditions of the island. Next, we will describe the site of Polizzello and the range of artworks. Finally, we will discuss these objects under the lens of the so-called «animal-studies» to highlight the important role of the bovines in human social dynamics.

The objective of the article is an approach to the controversial biography of Police Chief Manuel Brabo Portillo. The work is based on primary and secondary sources. The method used is empirical. In the imagery of the revolutionary syndicalist world, Brabo Portillo was the most hated policeman, the reincarnation of the murkiest face of the state. He was also a German spy connected with the sinking of Spanish ships, the murder of businessman and engineer Josep Barret and the first head of the terrorists linked to Barcelona employers. The conflict that affected Spain during the period of the First World War is fundamental in order to understand the origins of terrorism linked to pistolerismo, which marked Spanish social political history during the first third of the twentieth century.

This paper presents a first approach to the study of the presence and activity of different Spanish bankers operating in Paris between 1820 and 1940. This study also pays particular attention to the trajectory of three different banking houses that were able to survive their respective founders (the Uribarren-Abaroa Bank, the Mijtans-Movellan Bank, and the Gil Bank). An analysis is also made on the origin of the capital base that allowed these Banking houses, on how the American horizon was present in its activity, and what were the main sources of their activity, as well as the links that these bankers and their Banking houses had with Spanish capitalism.

'Not all that burns is wood': a social perspective on fuel exploitation and use during the Indus urban period (2600-1900 BC)

Ancient civilisations depended heavily on natural fuel resources for a wide array of activities, and this had an impact on such resources that can be traced in the archaeological record. At its urban apex, the populations of the Indus Civilisation (2600–1900 BC) produced a wide range of objects and crafts, several of which involved highly specialised pyrotechnology. In the wake of increasing aridity and a period of weakened monsoon rainfall that affected South Asia from 2100 BC, these activities potentially put pressure on the natural resource base that may have had to be counterbalanced by differentiation in fuel use. The combined analysis of archaeobotanical and geoarchaeological remains from four Indus urban phase archaeological sites, has enable an assessment of the mechanisms through which people exploited wood, and diversified their fuel resources to adapt to the arid to semi-arid environments in which they lived. The combined use of local wood species with alternative fuels, such as dung and crop-processing leftovers, are evidence for resilient socio-ecological practices during the 700 years of Indus urbanism and perhaps beyond.

Nuclear energy is a complex technology that requires intensive use of resources and high centralized decision-making processes, whose governance poses a real challenge for democratic societies. In this article we explore the social perceptions about nuclear energy in Spain through the analysis of opinion surveys and secondary data about the main actors of three case studies (Vandellós I, Valdecaballeros, and Radioactive Waste Storage). The results show how the arguments of the several actors are based on very different dimensions of risk, often ignored in the surveys and by the actors, which represents a serious difficulty to overcome the controversies caused by this type of energy.

We present preliminary results of an Earth observation approach for the study of past human occupation and landscape reconstruction in the Central Sahara. This region includes a variety of geomorphological features such as palaeo-oases, dried river beds, alluvial fans and upland plateaux whose geomorphological characteristics, in combination with climate changes, have influenced patterns of human dispersal and sociocultural activities during the late Holocene. In this paper, we discuss the use of medium- and high-resolution remotely sensed data for the mapping of anthropogenic features and paleo- and contemporary hydrology and vegetation. In the absence of field inspection in this inaccessible region, we use different remote sensing methods to first identify and classify archaeological features, and then explore the geomorphological factors that might have influenced their spatial distribution.

Transition to agriculture
The origins of agriculture and the shift from hunting and gathering to committed agriculture is regarded as one of the major transitions in human history. Archeologists and anthropologists have invested significant efforts in explaining the origins of agriculture. A period of gathering intensification and experimentation and pursuing a mixed economic strategy seems the most plausible explanation for the transition to agriculture and provides an approach to study a process in which several nonlinear processes may have played a role. However, the mechanisms underlying the transition to full agriculture are not completely clear. This is partly due to the nature of the archeological record, which registers a practice only once it has become clearly established. Thus, points of transitions have limited visibility and the mechanisms involved in the process are difficult to untangle. The complexity of such transitions also implies that shifts can be distinctively different in particular environments and under varying historical and social conditions. In this paper we discuss some of the elements involved in the transition to food production within the framework of resilience theory. We propose a theoretical conceptual model in which the resilience of livelihood strategies lies at the intersection of three spheres: the environmental, economical, and social domains. Transitions occur when the rate of change, in one or more of these domains, is so elevated or its magnitude so large that the livelihood system is unable to bounce back to its original state. In this situation, the system moves to an alternative stable state, from one livelihood strategy to another.

The articulation of reality: an approach to religious language from the perspective of Japanese thought

Religious language
On the basis of Lluís Duch’s idea that there is no specifically religious language, the article examines the kōan, a form of dialogue typical of Zen Buddhism used as a meditation technique and compiled in several written collections. Using the interpretations of the kōan carried out by some contemporary Japanese philosophers, the paper reflects on the expressive resources developed by Zen literature in order to account for the tension between the ineffability of the experience of an ultimate reality and the infinite possibilities of linguistic articulation of reality.

The aim of this paper is to present the essentials elements of Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of body. I will describe the transcendental function of the body as a tacit cogito outlined by Phénoménologie de la perception, in order to highlight, in contrast with this, the ontological deepening roughed out by Le visible et l’invisible. Indeed, in this late context, the understanding of the corporeality (the Visible) depends in a constitutive way on his link with the thinking (the Invisible). I will show that this Visible-Invisible Chiasm adheres in an original way to the productivity principle immanent to the flesh of the world as a fundamental ontological dimension.

The article analyzes the role that culture played in German-Spanish relations during National-Socialism. This is a relevant historiographical question for two main reasons. The first, that we still lack an overall approach on the cultural relations between the two countries in that period. The second, that when the national-socialists came to power in 1933, culture had already become for a long time an essential part of foreign politics of the most important European powers, and consequently also of Germany. The article explains the motivations for intensifying cultural relations for both countries. Its ultimate objective is to get a clearer idea about the affinities between Nazi Germany and the Francoist regime. We base the analysis in our own research in archives as well as in the already existing literature on partial aspects of the cultural relations between the two countries. We conclude that the tensions between the different political sectors which looked for hegemony inside the francoist regime were not the decisive factor to explain the variations in the intensity of the cultural relations between the two countries. The decisive element was the negative evolution of the Second World War for Germany. Finally, the research proves that the ideological coincidences between the two regimes and the level of fascistization of Franco’s dictatorship in its first stages should not be underestimated.

In Fedor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky’s body of work (1821-1881) one can find more than thirty references to Don Quixote; while some of them allude to the novel of Don Quixote itself, other ones refer to Cervantes’ hero as an archetypal figure. Since decades ago, the Russian literary criticism has been interested in the Russian quixotism – including Dostoevsky’s work – and important studies on this subject have been published recently. This study follows Dostoevsky’s references on La Mancha’s Knight as an independent figure of Cervantes’ novel, and the different symbolism Don Quixote’s figure has had in both Russian people and Russian intelligentsia.

The objectifying documentary: realism, aesthetics and temporality
Capdevila, Pol
Objectifying documentary
Objectivity
Documentary realism
Temporality of the image
Image manipulation
Al-Durrah affair
This article deals with the representation of reality in documentary and describes a new category of documentary, namely, the objectifying documentary. The objectifying documentary originated in the 2000s, with examples such as Bosnia. Lost Images (2003), and questions a certain type of war propaganda. It pursues two goals: to deconstruct the conventions of the realist style and reveal the artifice behind its supposed immediacy and claim to provide “evidence” of what happened; and to tell a story from a rational, “objectified” point of view. It therefore takes on the appearance of an epistemological tool informed by scientific rationality. In this paper I first describe the characteristics of the realist style in documentary, which was hegemonic until the end of the twentieth century. I then develop the concept of the objectifying documentary and describe its visual and narrative strategies. My methodology is that of aesthetic analysis, as proposed by Corner (2003). I illustrate the concept of the objectifying documentary through the case study of a realist-style news report on the killing of Muhammad Al-Durrah in 2000, which has since been objectified by the documentary Das Kind, der Tod und die Wahrheit (2009). In the last section I analyse one of the most powerful visual strategies for constructing documentary objectivity, namely, the manipulation of temporality. In the conclusions I reflect on the presumed rationality and scientific nature of objectifying documentaries and their epistemic ideology.

I present art as a potential source of aporetic temporal experiences. The experiences in question are aporetic by virtue of both their anti-narrative quality and their potential to disrupt or short-circuit dominant models of experiencing temporality. I argue that contemporary art shares with earlier artistic trends a critical attitude towards dominant narratives but has its own particular way of dealing with time. In the first section, I frame narratives and temporality within a critical approach in which our current culture is seen as imposing ways of living and thinking through narratives. The focus in this article is on artistic expressions that take a critical stance in this context. In the second section, I sketch a genealogy of anti-narrative artistic phenomena. I explain that while the Avant-gardes played a more experimental role, the art of the sixties was oriented, according to influential art critics and academics, to decoding dominant discourses. In the next section, I discuss current studies in narratives, which open the door to new kinds of narratives other than the classic ones. In Sections 46, I show the temporal and anthropological relevance of these new narratives through a rereading of Ricoeur’s theory of the complementarity of time and narrative. Through a personal and original interpretation of the Ricoeurian aporetic of time, I argue that we can experience temporality and other aspects of our life*self-identity, moral values, and historical events*outside of consistent narratives, although the experience may be critical or disappointing. Finally, I illustrate this thesis by reference to two contemporary works of art, both shown at Documenta (13).

The figure of Dragut, Dragutto or Turgut Reis, occupied an exceptional place in literature and Spanish historiography. His contemporaries admired this fearsome enemy rather than criticizing him (especially in the part regarding the Italian coasts). Subsequently, when Dragut achieved to conquer almost all the eastern Tunisian coast (Mahdia, Susa and other cities), he broke again the fragile Spanish-Ottoman balance. Actually, Dragut meant to Tunis what the Barbarossas meant to Algiers, the eliminator of the Spanish influence in Tunis, from then converted into regency. The role of Dragut explains that, after his death, the chroniclers who narrate the history of the Spanish monarchs tend to demonize him, after understanding the role that Dragut had played in the battle for the control of Maghreb.

In the Aran Valley, the political and administrative border does not coincide with the cultural boundaries. The Spanish Valley situated in the Atlantic Pyrenees and within the Occitan cultural realm has a peripheral and quite inaccessible location in relation to Spain, while it has easy access from the French side. The particularities of this territory where highly valued by the Spanish Republican army to design the Spanish Reconquista campaign during the early years of Franco’s dictatorship. The invasion of the Aran Valley is one of the historical episodes of the Spanish post-war that is has little been studied. It was the most serious attempt, in October of 1944, of establishing a provisional Republican government in the Aran Valley with the support of the Spanish guerrilla (the maquis), who also have been collaborating in the exile with the French resistance in Southern France. The operation lasted 11 days and the maquis’ presence was particularly important in this area. Its unexpected arrival and their contact with the local population are the subject of our research. This historical episode always has been explained from the point of view of the “maquis” or the francoist soldiers who participated in the operation, but never from the viewpoint of the valley residents. Our focus is to unfold the narratives of those who experienced a real alteration of their everyday life, and more particularly women. Recorded interviews are the methodological tools used to discover, to value and to preserve the oral memory of this event, always with a gender perspective. The analysis of these life’s stories of these women that were children at that time offers us a new narrative of the events, as well as a resource to understand the daily relationships and their particular sense of place. The objective and contribution of this research is thus the recollection of testimonies of the immaterial patrimony and the study of everyday life practices from a gender point of view in a key historical moment of the valley history. The importance of the recovery of the oral historical memory goes together with the breaking off of secrets around the post-war and the Spanish democratic transition.

The distracted believer and the return to the first basilica: Marqués de Ureña’s Reflexiones sobre la arquitectura, ornato, y música del templo of 1785

A key text on Spanish architectural reform, Marqués de Ureña’s Reflexiones sobre la arquitectura, ornato, y música del templo of 1785, contains a rich and layered discussion of the doctrinal and aesthetic foundations of ecclesiastical architecture. Ureña’s Reflexiones appears at a moment of transition for Spanish architectural history by calling for a return to the ancient basilica type. The paper reconstructs a discussion waged by Ureña and his contemporaries on problems within the contemporary Spanish church interior: its use of wooden ornament, ephemerals, transformable altars and other Spanish late-baroque ecclesiastical décor. Thus, the return to origins in Christian architecture might be framed in terms of a wider debate on usage, and the sense in which the basilica offered a corrective for the relationship between the religious building and religious practitioners. The integration of doctrine and aesthetic reason in this defence of the original basilica furthermore demonstrates Ureña’s wish to modernize devices that had traditionally undergirded religious practice and featured materially in the education of the faithful. Finally, the paper argues for the importance, given Ureña’s introduction of a framework that allowed for an aesthetic way of reasoning, of considering affective responses to architecture in the Iberian and Hispanic context.

The fall of the fortress of Hormuz in 1622 to a Persian attack with crucial naval support from the East India Company has had two traditional readings: the first emphasizes the transformation of the local context in the Persian Gulf, with the growing power of the monarchy of the Shah Abbas; the second considers the decline of the Portuguese imperial system in Asia, through the gradual loss of military and commercial competitiveness. A third analysis, no less necessary but seldom undertaken, should consider the imperial perspective of the metropolis.

After the Roman persecutions carried on by the emperor Diocletian (284-305 AC), the increase of relics and their fragmentation forced the Catholic Church to regulate not only their production but also their authenticity. From the 16th century onwards, the Jesuits produced a great number of saints and blessed martyrs in the missions of Europe, Asia and America, certifying the principle of universality that defines Jesuit identity. Bones of dead bodies, pieces of black doublets, crosses and sacred objects circulated quickly over the Christian world, contributing to spread the faith in the new extra-European spaces. In this study I argue that the cult of relics cannot be dissociated from a global perspective of the Jesuit mission, articulated with a “demand of the saint” at the Spanish and Portuguese peripheries that adapted rapidly to a local context. The Mariana Islands, located at the margins of the Spanish empire, exemplify a borderland where the martyrs of the Society of Jesus, as models of evangelical dedication in the furthest regions of the known world, became producers and distributors of relics.

Previous research has identified the antiquity and chronology of dairying practices asbeginning in the Near East and its subsequent spread across Europe. In the Libyan Sahara, archaeo-logical evidence, confirmed by the remarkable rock art depicting cattle herding, together with faunalevidence, also suggests an early inception of dairying practices in North Africa and the formation ofan independent ‘secondary products’ economy by mobile pastoral groups. In this paper, we elaborateon the first unequivocal chemical evidence, based on the δ13C and ∆13C values of the major fattyacids of milk fat, for the adoption of dairying practices by prehistoric Saharan African people in thefifth millennium BC.

This article is an approximation to the trajectory of Fernando Soldevilla Ruiz (1854-1931) and to his españolista speech, that is to say, Spanish nationalist. He was a relatively prolific writer and respected journalist, with a long trajectory in newspapers of the relevance of El Imparcial or La Correspondencia de España. From humble origins was a prominent member of Spanish liberalism. He served as a civil governor and twice elected him deputy. In 1913, at the age of fifty-nine, he was appointed head of the Mercantile and Insurance Inspection, and held him until he retired in 1929. He was characterized by being a staunch defender of a politically centralized Spain and culturally uniformized. He was one of the main critics of catalanismo and Basque nationalism, which he identified as bizcaitarras, especially from El Año político, political yearbook published in Spain, in the first decades of the twentieth century.

The article begins with an introduction to Hildegard’s visionary experience as understood in the twelfth century, that is, as a revelation and an inspiration of the Holy Spirit and therefore as an event that repeats the Pentecost event. It then considers the vision of the heavenly city in the saint’s prophetic work, specifi cally in Scivias and Liber Divinorum operum, and in her poetry and correspondence, comparing this view of the city with the vision of the heavenly Jerusalem as its role and meaning were understood in medieval culture. We conclude with an example of the view of the heavenly city in the twentieth century provided by the Red Book of Carl Gustav Jung. This last point aims to show the survival of the subject in modern culture, albeit expressed in very different contexts and languages.

We present the results of the microstratigraphic, phytolith and wood charcoal study of the remains of a 10.5 ka roof. The roof is part of a building excavated at Tell Qarassa (South Syria), assigned to the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B period (PPNB). The Pre-Pottery Neolithic (PPN) period in the Levant coincides with the emergence of farming. This fundamental change in subsistence strategy implied the shift from mobile to settled aggregated life, and from tents and huts to hard buildings. As settled life spread across the Levant, a generalised transition from round to square buildings occurred, that is a trademark of the PPNB period. The study of these buildings is fundamental for the understanding of the ever-stronger reciprocal socioecological relationship humans developed with the local environment since the introduction of sedentism and domestication. Descriptions of buildings in PPN archaeological contexts are usually restricted to the macroscopic observation of wooden elements (posts and beams) and mineral components (daub, plaster and stone elements). Reconstructions of microscopic and organic components are frequently based on ethnographic analogy. The direct study of macroscopic and microscopic, organic and mineral, building components performed at Tell Qarassa provides new insights on building conception, maintenance, use and destruction. These elements reflect new emerging paradigms in the relationship between Neolithic societies and the environment. A square building was possibly covered here with a radial roof, providing a glance into a topologic shift in the conception and understanding of volumes, from round-based to square-based geometries. Macroscopic and microscopic roof components indicate buildings were conceived for year-round residence rather than seasonal mobility. This implied performing maintenance and restoration of partially damaged buildings, as well as their adaptation to seasonal variability.

Ibn al-Hajj al-‘Abdari a Maliki jurist in Mamluk Cairo, denounced a religious “innovation” (bid‘a) that had apparently become current in fourteenthcentury Egypt: “Infidels” would interrupt the Muslim Friday sermon in order to profess or reiterate their conversion to Islam before the entire congregation. Ibn al-Hajj urged preachers not to tolerate such interruptions under any circumstances, a posture that seems at odd with Mamluk policy of inducing such conversions especially among the Coptic community. The Maliki jurist’s legal arguments furnish new insights into the hitherto unexplored role of the Friday liturgical sermon in the conversion to Islam. This article will explain the legal basis of Ibn al-Hajj’s opposition to this practice, propose some explanations for the motivations behind the would-be convert’s interruption of the sermon, and relate this phenomenon to the historical context of tense Muslim-Christian relations in fourteenth-century Mamluk Egypt.

RAF’s terrorism was the biggest challenge for the German political and economic order after World War II. This phenomenon cannot be properly understood if it is not connected to its great media exposure and impact. This was the starting point of an exhibition that brought together the works of three generations of artists that have reflected about the history of the RAF.

The socio-economic project of an emerging elite in Beni, since the midnineteenth century, had a negative impact on several of the indigenous peoples that lived in the old missions. In order to secure their survival, these groups developed various strategies. Focusing on the Moxeño Trinitario, located mainlyin the capital, Trinidad, we will observe the group's strategy, developed by its corregidor José Santos Noco Guaji, before the advancement of the internal frontier and the progressive formation of the Bolivian nation-state. Santos Noco reformulated the elements of mission culture in herited from the Jesuits –social, economic and political practice and the Catholic world view with the civil rights granted by Bolivian legislation -citizenship and property- in order to create a space on the banks of the Sécure and Mamore Rivers, where Trinitarios lived in relative autonomy between the 1880’s and 1930.

This article analyzes the coronation ceremony of Ferdinand VI in the Mariana Islands and the funeral rites of his father, Philip V that preceded it as a Baroque representation of power (1747). They were, in fact, two complementary functions that Alejandra Osorio has referred to as the «Two Faces of Janus», that were oriented to represent the figure of the Spanish monarch and to reinforce loyalty and fidelity among the subjects of the islands situated on the fringe of the empire.

Given that selves are constructed in contexts of social interaction, we can safely assume that funerary behaviour fostered the formation of subjective identity in prehistoric societies. Funerary behaviour can therefore be seen as an active component in representing and negotiating Argaric social identities, including female selves, which are the main focus of this essay. An overview of Argaric funerary practices will be presented here, alongside new hypotheses on how they were conducted. A study of corpses and funerary material culture will show how it was predominantly through relational mechanisms that Argaric women’s selves were constructed.

Imperialismo
In this article I firstly reconstruct the main theses of the first chapter of the second part of The Origins of Totalitarianism: “The political emancipation of the bourgeoisie”. Arendt argues here that imperialism at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries was the consequence of two conflicting logics: that of the geographically bounded nation-state, and that of the unlimited expansion of the capitalist economy. Secondly, I show how this idea of two conflicting logics has been recently taken over by different social analysts to investigate the world geopolitical and economic situation during the presidential mandate of George Bush Jr. -a period that David Harvey has once again called, like the thirty year period investigated by Arendt, “the new imperialism”.

In this article I analyze the conquest and conversion of the Marianas (1676- 1690) as a discursive reality that turned the islands in a violent theater wherein the chamorros were defined as ruthless warriors (warrior’s ethos), and the Jesuits, on the contrary, as victims of the betrayals and retaliations of their newly converted «children» (martyr’s ethos). The hagiographers elevated their Jesuit martyrs to the category of «moral heroes», turning their deeds into a strong element of cohesion and identity for the missionaries preaching in the archipelago. In addition, the superiors wrote informaciones or memorials in which they stood out the behaviour of the military «heroes» of the colonization. We refer to José de Quiroga y Losada, captain and major sergeant of the garrison, and to the «loyal Indian» don Ignacio de Hineti, Indian sergeant and a «good Christian», whose military expeditions were directed to deal with the «anomaly» of the chamorros’ resistance. After the Second Great War (1683-86), the Jesuits clearly adopted the political and religious leadership in the islands, becoming the founders of a real «missionary state» wherein their martyrs acted as moral referents of the subjugated territories.

This article describes and analyzes the techniques and lyrics employed by Hanns Eisler in some of the songs he composed during the Weimar Republic and later on during his exile in the United States. If the early compositions were created with the aim of contributing to the workers’ political struggle and thus reflect Eisler’s rejection of the autonomy of art, or art for its own sake, the later ones can be interpreted as symptoms of what I here call the “forced” autonomy of art.

This article analyzes the rhetorical and ritual characteristics of pious exhortation (wa‘z) as practiced in al-Andalus and the Maghreb, based on specimens from two homiletic sources. The texts are considered in light of hagiographical and juridical data in order to assess the social role of exhortatory preachers and to explain the extraordinary impact of their sermons. The sermon’s affective power derives from the preacher’s personal charisma, rhetorical prowess, and his active engagement of his audience in the production of their own charismatic experience. The hagiographies considered depict the wa‘iz as a witness to God’s omnipotence, precipitating the religious conversion of even the socially marginalized.

The article focuses on the Spanish policy in the Phillippines during the years previous to the Tagal rebellion (1896-1897), according to the report that ''Capitán General" Eulogio Despujol sent to the "Ministerio de Ultramar" on the causes that moved him to order the exile ofJosé Rizal. The study deals, also, whit the main dijferences between the liberal cabinet policy and the conservative policy, and with the political targets designed by the last "Capitanes Generales" ofthe Phillippines.

Anthropogenic changes in land use and land cover (LULC) during the pre-industrial Holocene could have affected regional and global climate. Existing scenarios of LULC changes during the Holocene are based on relatively simple assumptions and highly uncertain estimates of population changes through time. Archaeological and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions have the potential to refine these assumptions and estimates. The Past Global Changes (PAGES) LandCover6k initiative is working towards improved reconstructions of LULC globally. In this paper, we document the types of archaeological data that are being collated and how they will be used to improve LULC reconstructions. Given the large methodological uncertainties involved, both in reconstructing LULC from the archaeological data and in implementing these reconstructions into global scenarios of LULC, we propose a protocol to evaluate the revised scenarios using independent pollen-based reconstructions of land cover and climate. Further evaluation of the revised scenarios involves carbon cycle model simulations to determine whether the LULC reconstructions are consistent with constraints provided by ice core records of CO2 evolution and modern-day LULC. Finally, the protocol outlines how the improved LULC reconstructions will be used in palaeoclimate simulations in the Palaeoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project to quantify the magnitude of anthropogenic impacts on climate through time and ultimately to improve the realism of Holocene climate simulations.

This article analyzes a form of iconographic transmission that originates from artistic sources of the past, the Mannerist and
Baroque still lifes, which is readjusted and reformulated by the security forces to convey a communicative message of significant impact: the confiscated objects in a police raid are presented in an art form we call «police still life», that immediately incites the sense of guilt. This systematic practice of various Spanish police forces (Civil Guard, National Police, Mossos d’Esquadra, Ertzaintza) presents a method of using an iconographic motif as a communicative form of state power. This article summarizes some of the results of the research project MOVEP (The visual motifs in the public sphere. This paper aims to illustrate how the multiple connections between poetry imitation, adaptation, and translation, can still be complicated and enriched by the use of different meters and stanzas in the reception literature. The examples are taken from XVIth century Spanish translators: Juan del Encina, Fray Luis de León and Francisco Sánchez de las Brozas (Virgil); Jerónimo de Urrea (Ariosto); Baltasar de Romaní and Jorge de Montemayor (Ausiàs March); Góngora and Francisco Faría (Claudianus).

Widespread ethnographic evidence exists for the addition of animal dung to clay during the process of ceramic production. However, conclusive evidence of dung tempering in archaeological ceramics is relatively rare. The aim of this study is to ascertain whether, and under which conditions, dung tempering of pottery is identifiable. To answer these questions, we assessed whether a combination of micro-particle analysis in loose sediment and thin-section petrography can reveal the addition of dung to the clay paste by focusing on faecal spherulites, ash pseudomorphs, phytoliths and coprophilous fungal spores. We analysed several series of experimentally produced ceramic briquettes tempered with different types of dung and dung ash, which were fired at a range of increasing temperatures. Our study shows that the identification of dung tempering represents a challenge, and it depends on a number of different factors, among others the original presence of dung markers in the dung used, the manufacturing process, the firing temperatures and the firing atmosphere. Overall, through a multidisciplinary approach, our work clarifies a variety of issues connected to the identification of dung in ancient pottery, highlighting the role of faecal spherulites as the most promising proxy.

"Spanish" but "Jewish": race and national identity in nineteenth and twentieth century Spain

Colonialism
Ambivalent identities
Sephardim in contemporary Spain were and are thought to be a historical-cultural “mix” of "Jewish" and "Spanish". This ambivalent conceptualization was formed at the intersection between Spanish late colonialism in North Africa and Spanish nationalism and the (re)thinking of Spain’s Jewish and Muslim past. The ambivalent conceptualization that emerged had also an impact on Spanish policies towards the Sephardim. In this article, I approach these questions from an anthropological perspective and through historical ethnography and archival research. I conclude that the mixed notion of Sephardic Jews in contemporary Spain was an ideological construct that allowed both the socio-political inclusion as well as the exclusion of Sephardim in the Spanish national state.
