In this article we present a hybrid approach for automatic summarization of Spanish medical texts. There are a lot of systems for automatic summarization using statistics or linguistics, but only a few of them combining both techniques. Our idea is that to reach a good summary we need to use linguistic aspects of texts, but as well we should benefit of the advantages of statistical techniques. We have integrated the Cortex (Vector Space Model) and Enertex (statistical physics) systems coupled with the Yate term extractor, and the Disicosum system (linguistics). We have compared these systems and afterwards we have integrated them in a hybrid approach. Finally, we have applied this hybrid system over a corpora of medical articles and we have evaluated their performances obtaining good results.

This paper presents a webservice architecture for Statistical Machine Translation aimed at non-technical users. A workflow/neditor allows a user to combine different webservices using a graphical user interface. In the current state of this project,/nthe webservices have been implemented for a range of sentential and sub-sentential/naligners. The advantage of a common interface and a common data format allows the user to build workflows exchanging different aligners.

Lexical Resources are a critical component for Natural Language Processing applications. However, the high cost of comparing and merging different resources has been a bottleneck to have richer resources with a broad range of potential uses for a significant number of languages. With the objective of reducing cost by/neliminating human intervention, we present a new method for automating the merging of resources, with special emphasis in what we call the mapping step. This mapping step, which converts the resources into a common format that allows latter the merging, is usually performed with huge manual effort and thus makes the whole process very costly. Thus, we propose a method to perform this mapping fully automatically. To test our method, we have addressed the merging of two verb subcategorization frame lexica for Spanish, The results/nachieved, that almost replicate human work, demonstrate the feasibility of the approach.

In this work we present the results of experimental work on the development of lexical class-based lexica by automatic means. Our purpose is to assess the use of linguistic lexical-class based information as a feature selection methodology for the use of classifiers in quick lexical development. The results show that the approach can help reduce the human effort required in the development of language resources significantly.

This document describes some of the technological aspects of a project devoted to the creation of a factory for language resources. The project’s objectives are explained, as well as the idea to create a distributed infrastructure of web services. This document focuses on two main topics of the factory: (1) the technological approaches chosen to develop the factory, i.e. software, protocols, servers, etc. (2) and Interoperability as the main challenge is to permit different NLP tools work together in the factory. This document explains why XCES and GrAF are chosen as the main formats used for the linguistic data exchange.

This paper demonstrates a novel distributed architecture to facilitate the acquisition of Language Resources. We build a factory that automates the stages involved in the acquisition, production, updating and maintenance of these resources. The factory is designed as a platform where functionalities are deployed as web services, which can be combined in complex acquisition chains using workflows. We show a case study, which acquires a Translation Memory for a given pair of languages and a domain using web services for crawling, sentence alignment and conversion to TMX.

This paper presents a novel efficiencybased evaluation of sentence and word aligners. This assessment is critical in order to make a reliable use in industrial scenarios. The evaluation shows that the resources/nrequired by aligners differ rather broadly. Subsequently, we establish limitation mechanisms on a set of aligners deployed as web services. These results, paired with the quality expected from the aligners, allow providers to choose the most appropriate aligner according to the task at hand.

The objective of PANACEA is to build a factory of LRs that automates the stages involved in the acquisition, production, updating and maintenance of LRs required by MT systems and by other applications based on language technologies, and simplifies eventual issues regarding intellectual property rights. This automation will cut down the cost, time and human effort significantly. These reductions of costs and time are the only way to guarantee the continuous supply of LRs that MT and other language technologies will be demanding in the multilingual Europe.

Acquiring lexical information is a complex problem, typically approached by relying on a number of contexts to contribute information for classification. One of the first issues to address in this domain is the determination of such contexts. The work presented here proposes the use of automatically obtained FORMAL role descriptors as features used to draw nouns from the same lexical semantic class together in an unsupervised clustering task. We have dealt with three lexical semantic classes (HUMAN, LOCATION and EVENT) in English. The results obtained show that it is possible to discriminate between elements from different lexical semantic classes using only FORMAL role information, hence validating our initial hypothesis. Also, iterating our method accurately accounts for fine-grained distinctions within lexical classes, namely distinctions involving ambiguous expressions. Moreover, a filtering and bootstrapping strategy employed in extracting FORMAL role descriptors proved to minimize effects of sparse data and noise in our task.

Language Resources are a critical component for Natural Language Processing applications. Throughout the years many resources were manually created for the same task, but with different granularity and coverage information. To create richer resources for a broad range of potential reuses, nformation from all resources has to be joined into one. The hight cost of comparing and merging different resources by hand has been a bottleneck for merging existing resources. With the objective of reducing human intervention, we present a new method for automating merging resources. We have addressed the merging of two verbs subcategorization frame (SCF) lexica for Spanish. The results achieved, a new lexicon with enriched information and conflicting information signalled, reinforce our idea that this approach can be applied for other task of NLP.

The objective of the PANACEA ICT-2007.2.2 EU project is to build a platform that automates the stages involved in the acquisition, production, updating and maintenance of the large language resources required by, among others, MT systems. The development of a Corpus Acquisition Component (CAC) for extracting monolingual and bilingual data from the web is one of the most innovative building blocks of PANACEA. The CAC, which is the first stage in the PANACEA pipeline for building Language Resources, adopts an efficient and distributed methodology to crawl for web documents with rich textual content in specific languages and predefined domains. The CAC includes modules that can acquire parallel data from sites with in-domain content available in more than one language. In order to extrinsically evaluate the CAC methodology, we have conducted several experiments that used crawled parallel corpora for the identification and extraction of parallel sentences using sentence alignment. The corpora were then successfully used for domain adaptation of Machine Translation Systems.

This article reports on the results of the research done towards the fully automatically merging of lexical resources. Our main goal is to show the generality of the proposed approach, which have been previously applied to merge Spanish Subcategorization Frames lexica. In this work we extend and apply the same technique to perform the merging of morphosyntactic lexica encoded in LMF. The experiments showed that the technique is general enough to obtain good results in these two different tasks which is an important step towards performing the merging of lexical resources fully automatically.

This paper presents the platform developed in the PANACEA project, a distributed factory that automates the stages involved in the acquisition, production, updating and maintenance of Language Resources required by Machine Translation and other Language Technologies. We adopt a set of tools that have been successfully used in the Bioinformatics field, they are adapted to the needs of our field and used to deploy web services, which can be combined to build more complex processing chains (workflows). This paper describes the platform and its different components (web services, registry, workflows, social network and interoperability). We demonstrate the scalability of the platform by carrying out a set of massive data experiments. Finally, a validation of the platform across a set of required criteria proves its usability for different types of users (non-technical users and providers).

Subjective language detection is one of the most important challenges in Sentiment Analysis. Because of the weight and frequency in opinionated texts, adjectives are considered a key piece in the opinion extraction process. These subjective units are more and more frequently collected in polarity lexicons in which they appear annotated with their prior polarity. However, at the moment, any polarity lexicon takes into account prior polarity variations across domains. This paper proves that a majority of adjectives change their prior polarity value depending on the domain. We propose a distinction between domain dependent and romain independent adjectives. Moreover, our analysis led us to propose a further classification related to subjectivity degree: constant, mixed and highly subjective adjectives. Following this classification, polarity values will be a better support for Sentiment Analysis.

The work we present here addresses cue-based noun classification in English and Spanish. Its main objective is to automatically acquire lexical semantic information by classifying nouns into previously known noun lexical classes. This is achieved by using particular aspects of linguistic contexts as cues that identify a specific lexical class. Here we concentrate on the task of identifying such cues and the theoretical background that allows for an assessment of the complexity of the task. The results show that, despite of the a-priori complexity of the task, cue-based classification is a useful tool in the automatic acquisition of lexical semantic classes.

Automatic creation of polarity lexicons is a crucial issue to be solved in order to reduce time and/nefforts in the first steps of Sentiment Analysis. In this paper we present a methodology based on/nlinguistic cues that allows us to automatically discover, extract and label subjective adjectives/nthat should be collected in a domain-based polarity lexicon. For this purpose, we designed a/nbootstrapping algorithm that, from a small set of seed polar adjectives, is capable to iteratively/nidentify, extract and annotate positive and negative adjectives. Additionally, the method/nautomatically creates lists of highly subjective elements that change their prior polarity even/nwithin the same domain. The algorithm proposed reached a precision of 97.5% for positive/nadjectives and 71.4% for negative ones in the semantic orientation identification task.

Focusing on the examples of multiple degree modification, this paper argues that the class of degree expressions in English is syntactically and semantically diverse, subdivided both according to the semantic effects of its members and according to the extent to which they permit, and participate in, multiple layers of modification. We argue that these two factors are linked, and result in (at least) a three-way distinction between TRUE DEGREE MORPHEMES, whichmap gradable adjectives to properties of individuals and combine with their arguments in a Head-Specifier structure; INTENSIFIERS, which are syntactic and semantic modifiers of properties constructed out of gradable adjectives; and SCALE MODIFIERS, which are also syntactic and semantic modifiers, but which combine with ‘bare’ gradable adjectives (relations between individuals and degrees) rather than properties formed out of gradable adjectives.

In this paper we present a pattern-based approach to the automatic extraction of definitional knowledge from specialised Spanish texts. Our methodology is based on the search of definitional verbal patterns to extract definitional contexts related to different kinds of definitions: analytic, extensional, functional and synonymic. This system could be a helpful tool in the process of elaborating specialised dictionaries, glossaries and ontologies.

Terminological work aims to identify knowledge about terms in specialised texts in order to compile dictionaries, glossaries or ontologies. Searching for definitions about the terms that terminographers intend to define is therefore an essential task. This search can be done in specialised corpus, where they usually appear in definitional contexts, i.e. text fragments where an author explicitly defines a term. We present a research focused on the automatic extraction of those definitional contexts. The methodology includes three different processes: the extraction of definitional patterns, the automatic filtering of non-relevant contexts, and the automatic identification of constitutive elements, i.e., terms and definitions.

Modal indefinites are existential determiners that trigger modal inferences. Some of them, which we can call ‘random choice indefinites’, indicate that an agent made an indiscriminate choice (Choi 2007, Choi & Romero 2008, Rivero 2011a,b, Alonso-Ovalle & Menéndez- Benito 2011, 2013, a.o.). Spanish “uno cualquiera” belongs to this class. The sentence “Juan cogió una carta cualquiera” (‘Juan picked a random card’) conveys that Juan picked a card and that he chose it indiscriminately — he could have picked any other card. The random choice interpretation can be embedded under modals: the sentence “Juan tiene que haber ido a ver una película cualquiera” (‘Juan must have gone to see a random movie’) can convey that Juan must have gone to see a movie that he picked randomly. Under some modals, another possibility arises: a harmonic reading, on which “uno cualquiera” introduces a distribution effect with respect to the worlds that the modal ranges over. For instance, “¡Coge una carta cualquiera!” (‘take any random card!’) can be interpreted as conveying that any card is a permitted option. However, this harmonic interpretation is not available with all kinds of modals (modal selectivity).
This paper aims to derive the modal interaction pattern displayed by “uno cualquiera”. Recent research on verbal modality (e.g., Hacquard 2006, Kratzer 2009) argues that modal domains are anchored to parts of the evaluation world (situations, events, individuals), rather than to whole worlds. Following Alonso-Ovalle & Menéndez-Benito 2013, we assume that the random choice component of “uno cualquiera” projects a modal domain from the decision taken by the agent. This interpretation is derived by positing that “uno cualquiera” is a nominal quantifier anchored to an event argument. On this proposal, we expect different interpretations (random choice vs. harmonic) depending on what event “uno cualquiera” takes as anchor. When the anchor is the event argument of the verb, we will get the random choice interpretation. When “uno cualquiera” shares its anchor with that of a higher modal, we will get the harmonic interpretation. This hypothesis gives us a way to address modal selectivity: we contend that “uno cualquiera” requires anchors of a particular type, and harmonic interpretations are only possible when the anchor of the modal satisfies this requirement.

Instances (“Mozart”) are ontologically distinct from concepts or classes (“composer”). Natural language encompasses both, but instances have received comparatively little attention in distributional semantics.
Our results show that instances and concepts differ in their distributional properties. We also establish that instantiation detection (“Mozart – composer”) is generally easier than hypernymy detection (“chemist – scientist”), and that results on the influence of input representation do not transfer from hyponymy to instantiation.

The work presented here addresses the use of unmarked contexts in pattern-based nominal lexical semantic classification. We define unmarked contexts to be the counterposition of the class-indicatory, or marked, contexts. Its aim is to evaluate how unmarked contexts can be used to improve the accuracy and reliability of lexical semantic classifiers. Results demonstrate that the combined use of both types of distributional information (marked and unmarked) is crucial to improve classification. This result was replicated using two different corpora, demonstrating the robustness of the method proposed.

Reference is the crucial property of language that allows us to connect linguistic expressions to the world. Modeling it requires handling both continuous and discrete aspects of meaning. Data-driven models
excel at the former, but struggle with the latter, and the reverse is true for symbolic models.
We propose a fully data-driven, end-toend trainable model that, while operating on continuous multimodal representations, learns to organize them into a discrete-like entity library. We also introduce a referential task to test it, cross-modal tracking. Our model beats standard neural network architectures, but is outperformed by some parametrizations of Memory Networks, another model with external memory.

One of the most basic functions of language is to refer to objects in a shared scene. Modeling reference with continuous representations is challenging because it requires individuation, i.e., tracking and distinguishing an arbitrary number of referents. We introduce a neural network model that, given a de nite description and a set of objects represented by natural images, points to the intended object if the expression has a unique referent, or indicates a failure, if it does not. The model, directly trained on reference acts, is competitive with a pipeline manually engineered to perform the same task, both when referents are purely visual, and when they are characterized by a combination of visual and linguistic properties.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have shown to yield very strong results in several Computer Vision tasks. Their application to language has received much less attention, and it has mainly focused on static classification tasks, such as sentence classification for Sentiment Analysis or relation extraction. In this work, we study the application of CNNs to language modeling, a dynamic, sequential prediction task that needs models to capture local as well as long-range dependency information. Our contribution is twofold. First, we show that CNNs achieve 11-26% better absolute performance than feed-forward neural
language models, demonstrating their potential for language representation even in sequential tasks. As for recurrent models, our model outperforms RNNs but is below state of the art LSTM models. Second, we gain some understanding of the behavior of the model, showing that CNNs in language act as feature detectors at a high level of abstraction, like in Computer Vision, and that the model can profitably use information from as far as 16 words before the target.

We introduce LAMBADA, a dataset to evaluate the capabilities of computational models for text understanding by means of a word prediction task. LAMBADA is a collection of narrative passages sharing
the characteristic that human subjects are able to guess their last word if they are exposed to the whole passage, but not if they only see the last sentence preceding the target word. To succeed on LAMBADA,
computational models cannot simply rely on local context, but must be able to keep track of information in the broader discourse. We show that LAMBADA exemplifies a wide range of linguistic phenomena, and that none of several state-ofthe-art language models reaches accuracy above 1% on this novel benchmark. We thus propose LAMBADA as a challenging test set, meant to encourage the development of new models capable of genuine understanding of broad context in natural language text.

In this paper, we investigate whether a neural network model can learn the meaning of natural language quantifiers (no,some and all) from their use in visual contexts. We show that memory networks perform
well in this task, and that explicit counting is not necessary to the system’s performance, supporting psycholinguistic evidence on the acquisition of quantifiers.

Distributional methods have proven to excel at capturing fuzzy, graded aspects of meaning (Italy is more similar to Spain than to Germany). In contrast, it is difficult to extract the values of more specific attributes of word referents from distributional representations, attributes of the kind typically found in structured knowledge bases (Italy has 60 million inhabitants). In this paper, we pursue the hypothesis that distributional vectors also implicitly encode referential attributes.
We show that a standard supervised regression model is in fact sufficient to retrieve such attributes to a reasonable degree of accuracy: When evaluated on the prediction of both categorical and numeric attributes of countries and cities, the model consistently reduces baseline error by 30%, and is not far from the upper bound. Further analysis suggests that our model is able to “objectify” distributional representations for entities, anchoring them more firmly in the external world in measurable ways.

In this position paper we argue that an adequate semantic model must account for language in use, taking into account how discourse context affects the meaning of words and larger linguistic units. Distributional semantic models are very attractive models of meaning mainly because they capture conceptual aspects and are automatically induced from natural language data. However, they need to be extended in order to account for language use in a discourse or dialogue context. We discuss phenomena that the new generation of distributional semantic models should capture, and propose concrete tasks on which they could be tested.

Research in audiovisual prosody has shown that typically beat gestures are temporally integrated with prominent positions in speech (e.g., [1, 2]). There is independent evidence that both prosodic prominence (e.g., pitch accents) and gestural prominence associated with words (e.g., beat gestures) facilitate the recall of information (e.g., [3, 4, 5]). However, previous studies did not directly compare the beneficial effects of pitch accentuation without beats with pitch accentuation with beats. This study investigates the role of prosodic prominence (pitch accents) and gesture prominence (beat gestures) on the recall of contrastive information in natural discourse. Twenty Catalan-dominant native speakers were asked to watch 48 short videotaped discourses each containing two contrast sets with two items (e.g., The fish shop and the grocery shop). The critical word in the sequence was presented under two experimental conditions: 1) accompanied by prosodic prominence (L+H* pitch accent); and 2) accompanied by prosodic prominence and gestural prominence (L+H* pitch accent + beat). The results of the recall task revealed that the presence of beat gestures associated with prosodic prominence favored word recall of contrastive information in discourse in comparison with the condition without beat gestures.

For years linguists have noted that intonation patterns encode similar meanings as sentence-final discourse particles across languages. A question that arises is what is the division of labor between the two and whether we find a compensatory distribution between the two kinds of systems. In this article, we focus on two languages within the Romance group (Catalan and Friulian) which have been reported to use intonation and discourse particles to different extents to mark epistemic meanings. Thirty speakers were asked to participate in a Discourse Completion Task designed to elicit statements with several degrees of speaker commitment. The results show that Catalan and Friulian display an asymmetry in the marking of epistemically-biased statements: while Catalan uses a greater variety of stance-marking intonation contours, Friulian uses a more varied set of stance modal particles and a more restricted set of intonation contours. However, both languages make use epistemic adverbs together with intonation and place restrictions on how pragmatic particles and intonation are paired, indicating that the relationship between the two systems can be quite complex. Overall, we claim that dynamic semantic models enable us to integrate the study of intonational meaning with other parts of the grammar into a unified approach.

While children’s acquisition of lexically encoded politeness formulas has been investigated to a certain extent, little is known about their sensitivity to prosody and facial expressions as cues to politeness. The goal of this paper is to test the ability of 3-year-old American English-speaking children to recognize a speaker’s polite stance in their native language based on prosodic and facial gestural politeness cues. A total of 36 3-year-olds were presented with recordings of an adult performing child-directed polite and non-polite requests, where the videos consisted of either audio-only (AO), visualonly (VO) or audio-visual (AV) modalities. Polite and nonpolite requests differed only in terms of prosody and facial expressions, though all spoken requests followed the same structure and included the word please. Each request asked the child to place a specified object in the bucket in front of the twin that had asked more nicely. Analysis of the results suggests that at age three children are clearly able to access a speaker’s polite stance through both prosody and facial gesture cues.

Research on verbal irony has found that prosodic features such as pitch range expansion, syllable lengthening, and specific intonational contours are common prosodic resources that languages use to mark irony in speech. Yet little is known about the relative weight of these prosodic features in the detection of irony in languages that use these three prosodic correlates. In this paper we present the results of two experiments designed to shed light on the relative contribution of the acoustic cues involved in verbal irony detection. The first experiment –a production task- was designed to confirm that these three prosodic features are typical of irony in French. Indeed, we found that these three features revealed themselves when readers produced a just read ironic utterance as opposed to a literal one. The second experiment presented the same stories as Experiment 1’s, but removed a single word from the context that would otherwise determine whether an acoustically presented utterance (which had been based on a literal reading) was ironic or not. The last word in these utterances was manipulated synthetically so as to create five experimental conditions: Not Modified, Modified Pitch Range, Modified Duration, Modified Intonation, and Modified All. Results showed (a) that speakers tended to interpret utterances as ironic when all acoustic modifications (i.e. pitch range expansion, syllable lengthening and marked intonation) were presented together (i.e. Modified_All); and (b) that the Modified_Duration and Modified_Intonation conditions were significantly more likely to encourage ironic readings than the Not_Modified and Modified_Pitch_Range conditions.

This study investigates the acquisition of second language (L2) rhythm by speakers of Dutch and Spanish, two languages that traditionally are considered to be rhythmically different. Specifically, it investigates whether the direction in which the L2 is learned (from Dutch to Spanish, or vice versa) influences the ease of acquisition. Dutch has relatively complex syllable structure and uses extensive final and accentual lengthening, while Spanish has a less complex syllable structure and uses less accentual and final lengthening. Consequently, Dutch and Spanish lie at opposite ends of the rhythm continuum. Eckman’s ([1], [2]) Markedness Differential Hypothesis (MDH) predicts that Dutch rhythm is more marked, and therefore more difficult to acquire for SLD, than Spanish rhythm is for DLS. When comparing accentual and final lengthening data by L2 learners with a low (A2) and high (B2) proficiency level in both learning directions, it is therefore expected that the DLS will advance more towards their respective target native speaker control group than SLD. Our results, however contradict the MDH, as they show that SLD outperform the DLS for both measures.

In this study, we examine how 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old Catalanacquiring children are able to make use of audio (intonational) and visual (facial gesture) modalities in the comprehension of speaker disbelief, as well as the role of the child’s developing Theory of Mind. Our results suggest that in this case, facial gesture provides children with scaffolding for linguistic meaning, and that explicit belief-reasoning also helps children to infer speaker disbelief. We discuss the implications of these findings for the study of intonational development.

This study explores the temporal coordination between gesture and speech by addressing two main questions: (1) Are speakers sensitive to the misalignment between gesture prominence and prosodic prominence? (2) Is this sensitivity modulated by the semantic information conveyed by gesture and speech modalities in production? Experiment 1 tested question (1) and Experiment 2 tested question (2). Results from Experiment 1 revealed that the combinations in which prominences were misaligned were less acceptable than combinations with aligned prominences, and that the metrical pattern of the target word had an effect on the speakers’ sensitivity: unsynchronized trochees (with the gesture prominence at the post-tonic syllable) were frequently accepted, while unsynchronized iambs (with the gesture
prominence at the pre-tonic syllable) were rejected. Results from Experiment 2 revealed that when the pointing gesture adds information to speech, i.e. it is supplementary to speech, the prominences are frequently misaligned (with gesture occurring after the speech), as if two different speech acts were produced. These findings suggest that the semantic content of gesture-speech combinations might influence the speakers’ sensitivity of the misalignment between prosodic and gesture prominences.

There is an increasing consensus to regard gesture and speech as parts of an integrated communication system, in part
because of the findings related to their temporal coordination at different levels. In general, results for different types of gestures show that the most prominent part of the gesture (the apex) is typically aligned with accented syllables [6, 10-12, 14, 17]. The aim of the present study is to test for this coordination by focusing on head movements taken from a semi-spontaneous setting in order to look at the effects of upcoming phrase boundaries on their timing. Our results show that while apexes of head gestures are synchronized with accented syllables, upcoming phrase boundaries have an effect on the timing of three gestural points, namely the start, apex, and end time of head gestures. Crucially, these points are aligned differently with respect to the stressed syllable for trochees as compared with iambs/monosyllables, showing that head nods are retracted before upcoming phrase boundaries. This result corroborates previous results by Esteve-Gibert & Prieto [17] for pointing gestures in laboratory settings.

The overarching goal of this paper is to advance on the understanding of how evidential meanings are expressed in
natural languages. Specifically, we aimed to investigate what type of meaning was encoded in yes-no questions through the
combination of the question particle (QP) que ‘that’ and the nuclear intonational pattern L+H* L% in Majorcan Catalan
yes-no questions (i.e., Que és un llibre?L+H* L% ‘QP-It’s a book?’), and to understand any temporal information that
might be encoded through this construction. Several complementary research methods were used to address our question: the Discourse Completion Task, an acceptability task and a multiple-choice questionnaire. The results show that three types of information are encoded in QP que_L+H* L% questions: sentence modality, inference based on direct evidence and immediacy of the evidence.

The topic of this paper is the realization of subjunctive mood in Griko. On the basis of the distribution of verbal forms inside na-clauses, we put forward the claim that, unlike Standard Modern Greek, in Griko subjunctive mood is encoded through both the choice of complementizer
and the morphology of the verb. The complementizer na and the verb inside the embedded clause are thus in a relation of concord. We further propose that concord in terms of mood is a grammatical feature induced in Griko via contact with Salentino. If our analysis is on the right track, then subjunctive mood is another domain where contact between Italo-Greek and Italo-Romance in Southern Italy has had effects in both directions.

In this paper we analyze the phenomenon of copular inversion (CI) in Catalan, which consists in the copula not agreeing with its subject but with its complement. We claim this is due to the idea that in CI-languages verbs agree with one of their cosubjects, i.e. the GFs that are coreferential with the subject, including the subject itself. In the case of copular sentences, there are two cosubjects the verb may agree with, namely the subject and the predicate; which one the verb agrees with is determined by a set of OT constraints that implement a Person-Number Hierarchy so that the copula agrees with the most marked cosubject. This theory does not affect the analysis of subjectverb agreement in non-copular sentences, as in such cases there is only one cosubject available, the subject itself. In order to integrate these ideas within an LFG framework, we propose a change in how verbal agreement is formalized: we claim that verbs do not specify the person and number features of the subject, but have a special structure, AGR, specifying their own features. An f-structure constraint requires this AGR to be unified with a GF in the sentence, the choice being licensed through an OT ranking of constraints.

This paper argues for the claim that the definite article (d-article) in Catalan is a bound morpheme that adds its information about grammatical category to that of the host it forms a compound with. In this way, the derived compound satisfies two X0 categories in the
c-structure, in an instance of lexical sharing (Wescoat 2002). The present proposal is shown to be superior to alternatives that, while assuming bound morpheme status for the d-article, assume a single category for the word that contains the d- article (as in Miller 1992 for French). The crucial evidence is provided by potentially boundless sequences in which the d-article and weak preposi- tions are adjacent to each other. Only a theory that recognizes the status of these elements as bound morphemes that add a grammatical category to the word they are part of correctly accounts for the relevant evidence.

Evidence is reviewed that requires abandoning verb-preposition reanalysis in the derivation of prepositional passives (P-passives). An alternative is proposed in which P-passives are a type of raising construction, where the object of the prepositional complement is structure-shared with the subject of the passive verb. This places the construction within the scope of the Theory of Structure-Sharing (Alsina 2008), which helps explain some of its properties. A proposal is made to account for the phrase-structure of Ppassives and for the crosslinguistic variation regarding the availability of P-passives and preposition stranding.

This paper presents the IULA Spanish Clinical Record Corpus, a corpus of 3,194 sentences extracted from anonymized clinical records and manually annotated with negation markers and their scope. The corpus was conceived as a resource to support clinical text-mining systems, but it is also a useful resource for other Natural Language Processing systems handling clinical texts: automatic encoding of clinical records, diagnosis support, term extraction, among others, as well as for the study of clinical texts. The corpus is publicly available with a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license.

The nature of -ing nominals has been widely debated since the early days of generative grammar (e.g. Lees 1960, Chomsky 1970), and at least since Vendler (1967), -ing forms also have played a central role in debates over natural language ontology for abstract objects. This paper attempts to simplify the ontology and account for the uses and interpretations a wide range of -ing forms using only a distinction between event types and event tokens. A core insight will be that the different constructions reflect different paths by which the -ing form may come to have type or token reference. A central contrast present among these different paths involves whether the event types/tokens are individuated through nominal morphology or through temporal anchoring.

This paper compares two views on the status of indices in syntactic and logical representations. On a structural view, indices are syntactic formants on a par with node labels and phrase bracketings, and are thus a part of the logical forms that are derived from syntactic representations. On the process view, an index is not a syntactic object at all, but rather, an indication of the output of a resolution process.
In this paper we argue that a recent body of data provides a clear empirical basis for distinguishing between these two views of indices. We argue that cases of sloppy VP ellipsis pose insurmountable problems for the structural view of indices, while these problems do not arise for the process view. Furthermore, we show that this resolution process is constrained by the semantics of various discourse relations.

While not-at-issue (NAI) content is typically introduced via particular syntactic constructions, accounts of NAI content that only consider the syntax/semantics interface face empirical difficulties. We develop a new approach to NAI content that exploits features of discourse structure to solve these difficulties, and we provide some insight on the strategic uses of NAI constructions.

The vast majority of Machine Translation
(MT) evaluation approaches are based
on the idea that the closer the MT output
is to a human reference translation,
the higher its quality. While translation
quality has two important aspects, adequacy
and fluency, the existing referencebased
metrics are largely focused on the
former. In this work we combine our
metric UPF-Cobalt, originally presented at
the WMT15 Metrics Task, with a number
of features intended to capture translation
fluency. Experiments show that the integration
of fluency-oriented features significantly
improves the results, rivalling the
best-performing evaluation metrics on the
WMT15 data.

Kennedy (2007) proposes a semantics for positive form adjectives on which the standard for ascribing an adjective A makes the individuals that are A stand out from those that are not. To account for the di erences between absolute and relative adjectives, Kennedy posits that the maximal and minimal degrees on closed scales naturally make individuals stand out in a way that degrees found away from the endpoints of a scale cannot. I argue that the ability of a degree to make individuals stand out is due less to scale structure than to the nature of the property the adjective describes. Thus, degrees that are not endpoints can behave like absolute standards as long as the application criteria for the property are clear. I relate the identi ability of such criteria to whether the property ascription can be modeled in terms of rule- vs. similarity-based classi cation (see e.g. Hahn and Chater, 1998).

This paper reports on a large-scale, statistical analysis of corpus data to support the null hypothesis that ethnic adjectives (EAs, e.g. French) are ordinary adjectives, rather than argument-saturating \nouns in disguise" (in, e.g., French agreement). In particular, EAs are argued to simply modify the noun they combine with; their special properties in inducing argument-like behavior arises from the interaction between the semantics of event nominals and that of the adjective.

This article deals with the problem of Cross-Lingual Text Categorization (CLTC), which arises when documents in different languages must be classified according to the same classification tree. We describe practical and cost-effective solutions for automatic Cross-Lingual Text Categorization, both in case a sufficient number of training examples is available for each new language and in the case that for some language no training examples are available. Experimental results of the bi-lingual classification of the ILO corpus (with documents in English and Spanish) are obtained using bi-lingual training, terminology translation and profile-based translation.

The study of quantification traditionally focused on structures where quantificational meanings are encoded in determiners. Only as a later development attention was paid to quantificational strategies that rely on adverbs, or affixes. In this paper I discuss three varieties of quantificational strategies attested in two sign languages (ASL and LSC) and argue that even the apparent instances
of determiner quantification in those languages make use of the more “constructional” way of encoding quantificational meanings that partially reflect the mapping onto tripartite structures overtly. Further, lexical quantification is addressed in the domain of distributivity.

This paper analyses the semantic attributes discourse referents in Catalan Sign Language may have in order to have a corresponding location established in sign space. It is argued that a combination of scope and topicality is required when analysing the correlation between the introduction of entities into the discourse and assigning a spatial
location.

In this paper we analyze the relation between the use and the perception of the variants a qui [‘to whom’], “a+article+qual” [‘to+article+whom’], “a+ article+que” [‘to+article+whom’] and que li [‘that him/her’] of the variable “indirect complement relative” (RCI). To do this, we analyze the results of an exercise to fill out blanks (EOB) and 3 perception surveys answered in 1997 by 26 subjects. In the EOB, 21 respondents used the variant a qui and 5 the variant “a+ article+qual”, on which the subjects were asked about when they used them, whether they were grammatical or not, and what stylistic distribution they had. In addition to these two variants given by the respondents, the 3 surveys asked about 5 more variants: “a+ article+que”, a qui li [‘to whom him/her’], “a+ article+qual+li” [‘to+article+whom+him/her’], “a+ article+que+li” [‘to+article+whom+ him/her’] and que li [‘that him/her’]. In this communication we only offer the data of the variants “a+ article+que”, which has been claimed as correct by Pla (2010: 96 and f.), and que li, which according to Fabra (1933: § 65) is “not tolerable but in the colloquial style” and according to GIEC (2016: 1057) is “a colloquial, informal
trend.” The result is that, according to this sample, the relationship between grammaticality and stylistic distribution of these 4 variants is that Catalan only has genuine variants (a qui and “a+ article+qual”) for formal or general registers. On the other hand, for colloquial registers, it would have –always according to this sample–, “non-Catalan” variants (“a + article + que” and que li). In any case, if the variant a qui, according to the respondents, did not have stylistic connotations, it would also be natural in colloquial contexts.

In this paper, we advance a comprehensive gesture labelling proposal which highlights the independence of the prosodic and semantic properties of different gesture types and at the same time challenges a simplistic definition of beat gestures as biphasic rhythmic non-meaningful gestures (e.g., [1][2]). Following McNeill’s [3] original proposal on gesture dimensions, we defend that all gesture types can associate with prosodic prominence, and even though beat gestures typically display this rhythmic behavior, this is also the case with other representational and pointing gestures too. Second, with respect to meaning, while beat gestures do not represent referential nor metaphoric content, they can serve a range of meaningful pragmatic and discursive functions in speech, which deserve to be further investigated. From a practical point of view, we propose that all non-referential gestures be initially classified as forms of beat gestures with a set of associated properties related to gesture form, prosodic form and pragmatic form. This gesture labelling proposal independently codes for (a) the form of gestures, (b) their properties of temporal association with prosodic prominence, and (c) their pragmatic meaning. We claim that this move allows for a more complete analysis of gestures in large-scale studies and opens the way for more comprehensive assessments of the interaction between gesture forms, prosodic forms, and semantic forms using labelled corpora.

Previous studies have investigated the effects of the inability to make hand gestures on speakers’ fluency; however, the question of whether encouraging speakers to gesture affects their fluency has received little attention. This study investigates the effect of restraining (Experiment 1) and encouraging (Experiment 2) hand gestures on the following correlates of speech: speech discourse length (number of words and discourse length in seconds), disfluencies (filled pauses, self-corrections, repetitions, insertions, interruptions, silent pauses), and acoustic properties (speech rate, measures of intensity and pitch). In two experiments, 10 native speakers of
Italian took part in a narration task where they were asked to describe comic strips. Each experiment compared two conditions. In Experiment 1, subjects first received no instructions as to how to behave when narrating. Then they were told to sit on their hands while speaking. In Experiment 2, subjects first received no instructions and were then actively encouraged to use hand gestures. The results showed that restraining gestures leads to quieter and slower paced speech, while encouraging gestures triggers longer speech discourse, faster speech rate and more fluent and louder speech. Thus, both restraining and encouraging hand gestures seem to clearly affect prosodic properties of speech, particularly speech fluency.

While prosody has been shown to act as a syntactic bootstrapper in early language acquisition, little is known about the role that prosody plays in the later development of a child’s ability to communicate pragmatic information such as the expression of politeness. The goal of this paper is to investigate whether preschool children use prosody earlier and more prominently than lexical and morphosyntactic cues to signal a polite stance. To this end, 64 three- to five-year-old Catalan-dominant children participated in a cross-sectional study involving a request production task under four different conditions, with interlocutors either a classmate or an unfamiliar adult (low/high social distance), and the ‘cost’ to the interlocutor’s face either low or high. The results showed that preschool children tend to use mitigating prosodic strategies to encode a polite stance early on and more markedly than they use lexical or morphosyntactic markers. These findings are consistent with what other research has found regarding the prosodic mitigation strategies used by Catalan-speaking adults to mark polite stance.

The aim of this study is to assess whether a brief training with rhythmic beat gestures helps L2 pronunciation in a reading aloud task with high school students. In a between-subjects pretest-posttest design, a total of 59 high school students were randomly assigned to one of the following two conditions: the beat gesture group and no-beat gesture group. In the beat gesture condition they were asked to first read two short stories aloud without any gestural instruction (pretest) and in the following two texts they were asked to move their hands (training). Students in the no-beat condition (control condition) were asked to read the four texts aloud (pretest and training) without any gestural instruction. Then, in order to see the benefits of gesture, both groups were asked to read a fifth text aloud (posttest) which was more difficult (more complex syntactic structure and longer) than the ones they read in the pretest or the training. Results showed that speakers who were asked to produce beat gestures during the training had better pronunciation measures (specifically accentedness, comprehensibility, and fluency) in the posttest than the ones that were not asked to produce any specific gesture during the training.

Recent research has shown that when preschoolers listen to a speaker who is simultaneously making beat gestures, this
favors their recall and comprehension of what they have heard and also boosts their narrative performance. However,
previous studies have not tested the effect of encouraging children to produce beat gestures while retelling narratives—
as opposed to merely observing them—on their narrative performances. In this study, a total of 47 five- and six-year-old
children participated in a between-subjects brief training study experiment with a pretest and an immediate posttest design. Children were exposed to a training phase with a total of six one-minute stories, presented under two experimental conditions: 1) beat non-encouraging condition, and 2) beat encouraging condition. Video recordings of the pretest and posttest narratives were then scored for narrative structure and fluency. A comparison of scores showed that children in the group that had been encouraged to use beat gestures performed better than the group of children who were simply asked to retell the story without gesture instruction. All in all, this evidence suggests that encouraging the use of beat gestures by children helps to boost their subsequent narrative performance.

Previous research has shown that rhythmic training enhances phonological speech processing (e.g., [1, 2, 3, 4]). Yet little is known about whether rhythmic training can also help to improve pronunciation in a second language (but see [5, 6, 7]). This study tests the potential benefits of hand-clapping to the rhythm of newly learned French words for the acquisition of pronunciation patterns by Catalan children and Chinese adolescents. In two between-subjects experiments with a pretest and posttest design, participants either repeated words while clapping the rhythmic structure of words or only repeated the words. The French target words were very similar to their lexical counterparts in Catalan, whereas they differed completely from Chinese. Participants’ oral production before and after training was rated for accentedness by three French native speakers. Results showed a significant improvement for the clapping group among the Catalan participants, whereas only a near significant tendency appeared for the Chinese adolescents. Individual musical abilities did not interact significantly with the results in either experiments but working memory played a significant role in Chinese participants’ pronunciation. The results show that a short phonological training session based on highlighting the rhythmic structure of words seems to help improve pronunciation in a foreign language as long as there is little demand placed on semantic processing.

The goal of this paper is to describe verbal agreement in languages like Icelandic in which the finite verb agrees with the nominative SUBJ, if there is one; otherwise, it agrees with a nominative OBJ; otherwise, it shows 3rd person singular features in the default gender (neuter in Icelandic). Special attention is paid to agreement in raising constructions, the raising verb may agree with the nominative OBJ of its infinitival complement. Similar facts occur in English locative inversion (Bresnan, 1994). These facts support the claim that verbs do not specify the Person-Number-Gender (PNG) features of any particular GF in their lexical entries. Instead, they specify the clausal PNG features as the feature structure AGR(EEMENT), which is unified with the AGR of the appropriate GF satisfying a set of OT constraints (as in Alsina & Vigo, 2014).

The goal of this paper is to explain verbal agreement in Plains Cree (Algonquian), in which verb forms always agree with the most prominent argument with respect to person and other referential features, but adopt either direct or inverse morphology depending on which is the GF of the most prominent. Following Alsina & Vigo (2014), we adopt the AGR(EEMENT) bundle to represent person and other agreement features. We claim that direct agreement is an instance of subject agreement in this person-governed agreement system and that inverse agreement is an instance of object agreement. The complex facts of inflectional verbal morphology in Plains Cree argue for an approach to morphology in which inflectional affixes are the realization of the information found in the word-level f-structure.

This paper describes our winning contribution to SemEval 2018 Task 4: Character Identification on Multiparty Dialogues. It is a simple, standard model with one key innovation, an entity library. Our results show that this innovation greatly facilitates the identification of infrequent characters. Because of the generic nature of our model, this finding is potentially relevant to any task that requires effective learning from sparse or unbalanced data.

Word embeddings are supposed to provide easy access to semantic relations such as “male of” (man–woman). While this claim has been investigated for concepts, little is known about the distributional behavior of relations of (Named) Entities. We describe two word embedding-based models that predict values for relational attributes of entities, and analyse them. The task is challenging, with major performance differences between relations. Contrary to many NLP tasks, high difficulty for a relation does not result from low frequency, but from (a) one-to-many mappings; and (b) lack of context patterns expressing the relation that are easy to pick up by word embeddings.

Exhaustivity is typically explained in terms of the exclusion of unmentioned alternatives. For this to work, the set of alternatives must be asymmetrical, lest both a proposition and its negation get excluded, yielding a contradiction (the Symmetry Problem). Since exhaustivity is regularly observed, these alternative sets must tend to be asymmetrical, and this requires an explanation. Existing explanations are based on considerations of brevity, but these run into certain problems. A new solution is proposed, explaining the asymmetry of alternatives in terms of the fact that discourse strategies with asymmetrical questions under discussion (Quds) are favored because they allow part of the answer to be communicated implicitly, namely as an exhaustivity implicature.

Recent state-of-the-art neural language models share the representations of words given by the input and output mappings. We propose a simple modification to these architectures that decouples the hidden state from the word embedding prediction. Our architecture leads to comparable or better results compared to previous tied models and models without tying, with a much smaller number of parameters. We also extend our proposal to word2vec models, showing that tying is appropriate for general word prediction tasks.

As more language service providers (LSP) are including post-editing (PE) of machine translation (MT) in their workflow, we see how studies on quality evaluation of MT output become more and more important. We report findings from a user study that evaluates three MT engines (two phrase-based and one neural) from French into Spanish and Italian. We describe results from two text types: product description and blog post, both from a motorcycling website that was actually translated by Datawords Datasia. We use task-based evaluation (PE is the task), automatic evaluation metrics (BLEU, edit distance, and HTER) and human evaluation through ranking to establish which system requires less PE effort and we set the basis for a method to decide when an LSP could use MT and how to evaluate the output. Unfortunately, large parallel corpora are unavailable for some language pairs and domains. Motorcycling and the French language are low-resourced, and this represents the main limitation to this user study. It especially affects the performance of the neural model.

We address the task of visual semantic role labeling (vSRL), the identification of the participants of a situation or event in a visual scene, and their labeling with their semantic relations to the event or situation. We render candidate
participants as image regions of objects, and train a model which learns to ground roles in the regions which depict the corresponding participant. Experimental results demonstrate that we can train a vSRL model without reliance on prohibitive image-based role annotations, by utilizing noisy data which we extract automatically from image captions using a linguistic SRL system. Furthermore, our model induces frame–semantic visual representations, and their comparison to previous work on supervised visual verb sense disambiguation yields overall better results.

The following work describes a method to automatically classify the sense selection of the complex type Location/Organization –which depends on regular polysemy– using shallow features, as well as a way to increase the volume of sense-selection gold standards by using monosemous data as filler. The classifier results show that grammatical features are the most relevant cues for the identification of sense selection in this instance of regular polysemy.

The lexical semantic relationships between word pairs are key features for many NLP tasks. Most approaches for automatically classifying related word pairs are hindered by data sparsity because of their need to observe two words co-occurring in order to detect the lexical relation holding between them. Even when mining very large corpora, not every related word pair co-occurs. Using novel representations based on graphs and word embeddings, we present two systems that are able to predict relations between words, even when these are never found in the same sentence in a given corpus. In two experiments, we demonstrate superior performance of both approaches over the state of the art, achieving significant gains in recall.
